I transferred to Columbia after my freshman year. Best decision i’ve ever made! Thanks for making this video. When I was going through the process I remember there being very little information on transfer applications.
I'm going to a top CC and plan to transfer to a VERY competitive ivy league school. Not even because of the prestige (I didn't apply to it as a hs student), but because it genuinely is the institution that matches my needs and wants the MOST, by far. It mostly accepts veterans and LAC students though. My "unique" story compared to other transfer students is that I'm a US citizen that was born and raised abroad (dual citizenship), and took a "forced" gap year (father didn't cosign loans) and ended up exploring Europe instead.
Good luck I tried applying to T20 and got rejected perfect grades from a cc. lor from the dean and my cal teacher. Also military vet went on multiple deployments. Got rejected
@@Mrbstjohn Thank you! At the end of the day the admissions process is like a wild card because there are so many competent applicants out there. What we must do is try our best to differentiate ourselves from other applicants and bring our own uniqueness! If the T20 you applied to was private, in your case I assume the rejection was due to them having lots of other veterans applying and preferring LoRs from professors because perfect grades and multiple deployments are great

My high school grade wasn't the best, so I’m thinking of applying for a transfer in Spring 2026, after I get high GPA for a year. Do you think it’s possible for me to apply for a transfer in Spring 2025 instead?
For transfer applicant into the ivys how many ecs do you think qualify as a worthy applicant ? Most people say IT HAS to be in your major subject for your ec ? Do you think this is a given or is it possible they would consider a transfer with other experience ? I am a transfer applicant to the ivys and I work for a cancer research company as a political science major and I am concerned I don’t have enough ec for political science
As a transfer applicant, you want to appear as focused as possible. You want to demonstrate that academically and extracurricularly, you have figured out precisely what you want to do in life. This makes it easy for them to understand why you want to attend their school. If you work for a cancer research company, try to figure out a way to integrate that into your political science ambitions. Maybe you plan to research the ways that our healthcare system has become polarized and politicized. That will help unify these seemingly incongruent activities.
Does the major you intend to pursue affect the chances? Ex: me applying as a transfer applicant as an upcoming sophomore to Columbia intending to pursue pre med
As a transfer student, your choice of major absolutely affects your admissions odds, because they're evaluating you specifically for that major. As a first-year applicant, it depends on the university. Most liberal arts universities don't give too much weight to your intended major, since you're likely to change it anyway. But if you apply to a specific college within a university (engineering, business, etc.), or to a more competitive major at a public university, your choice of major can make admissions harder.

Ivy, shmivy. Stanford, UChicago, MIT, Caltech all offer an education at least equal to the best of the Ivies and superior to the rest of the Ivies.

You can apply to transfer for either your sophomore or junior year, though sophomore year is most common.
Can I apply to transfer even after a two-year gap before attending my current university as a freshman? I have valid reasons for both of those years
i dont think i'll make it my freshmen grades are just terrible with C's and B's and very few A's
