Here we have Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata’s novel ’The Master of Go’, first published in serial form in 1951, and here published in a translation by Edward G. Seidensticker published by Vintage. Sedeinsticker has also written a short introduction for this novel.
This paperback edition is bound in coated paper binding in a glued perfect binding. The book is printed on non-acid free paper, the text size is fairly large. The book opens up well and the paper has a decent thickness and softness. It is printed and bound in the US.
I have never played Go myself, nor do I know how it's played (expect for the very basic rules and aim of the game) - but Kawabata still manages to describe its beauty and artistry so perfectly well. I had no idea what was happening on the board, but that wasn't necessary to enjoy this story, his writing transcended any need of understanding the game.
Yasunari Kawabata is one of my favorite authors of all time with masterpieces like Thousand Cranes, Snow Country and The Sound of the Mountain. He is the master of delicate prose, that captures the transient beauty of life, often infused with melancholy and nostalgia.
