Daniel, on there being a great diety or God or god's that tells you to go do this, often it is a "must have," incident putting humans interpretations above what the diety says exactly. This is very understandable and happens more times then I know. You may already know this but it is often an individuals interpretations that lead things not what it actually was. Perspective vs. Truth. Hope this was helpful.

Amazing interview on writing between a establish author and a aspiring writer. I would also like to thank Paolini for opening English fiction to me, Eldest was the first book I completed in English (because the french translation did not existe yet ). I will always remember being puzzle by words like "gaze" until I incorporated them into my personal vocabulary. In many way Eldest and the rest of your series was a important stepping stone in my understanding of English. Now I read more English book then french one ! Thank again! I have pre-order your new book and have high expectation that I am certain you will meet. (I am still very bad at spelling so sorry for the likely mistake).

This year, my first novel was published and it has been going better than I thought. I'm looking forward to read To Sleep in a Sea of Stars.

Spoilers Joe Abercrombies First Law book 3:
After Bayaz breaking the first law and calling the "storm" the people are suffering from this unknown illness which leads to their hair and teeth falling out, inner bleedings and dying rapidly. I think this might be the consequence of radiation coming from the other side.
It's still possible to be resolved otherwise as Im just at book 4 crrently but hey, that's my take on the magic-radioation topic.

Man! There is only one thing I wanna do, and that is to write. I don't care about philosophy or how to forge something. I chose fantasy for a reason. I can do what ever I want in my world, and it still can feel real.
JUST write - that is the important part. There is no right or wrong if it comes to writing. Everyone does it in his/her own unique way and it always can turn out to je great.
So don't feel bad, if you don't follow Chris advise. You can write how ever you want!
And this is by no means personal. I LOVE Eragon, and Christopher Paolini is one of the most inspiring persons when it comes to writing for me!

I think you are the author who made me realise even I can write at some point in my life. I started reading english books at fairly mid-late teens as english is not my native language. Eragon is one of the first books which made me want to write a collection of ideas that I had which are mixed with a lot of Indian mythology, science fiction and other historically significant events of human history.
And then I started doing my part of reading various stuff regardless of language and genre.
Somewhere down the lane, with the responsibilities of growing up and other natural progressions of life and just the fact that I didnt want to read something mediocre just to fill the void of the experience and the journey you undertake with a good book, I stopped reading.
Thats until I started re-reading Inheritance late last year. After the torrid year all of us had, I just wanted to read something and started reading fanfics and ended up rereading Inheritance.
Frankly, when I read the 4th part the first time in 2011, I wasnt really that impressed. I loved the book, but I expected a bit more, may be a bit different. Surprisingly, in my second reading, I loved the way you took the journey, motivations and subtle things that I missed in my first reading. May be age made me realise, few things I looked over.
I am 29 now and I have to say, in the last 4 months, after reading Inheritance, I read around 20 books including To Sleap in a Sea of Stars, which is 20 more than what I did in the last 5-6 years combined.
    So Mr. Paolini....Thank you.
Thank you for Inheritance cycle. Thank you for reminding me what I wanted in the first place.

If I come across a recently released debut novel and it's something I'm interested in, I like to buy it and give it a shot simply to help out the author. They have to get enough sales to even out their advance so they can get published again, and even if I don't end up liking their book I want them to have a chance at being successful.

THANK YOU Christopher for talking to the greater meaning in novels. I'm about to start querying for my first novel, and I keep hearing the advice, "Focus on the story. Don't talk about the message" etc. I get that it needs to be a good story, but I would argue that all the stories I like best are the ones that make us reflect on our own lives, our place, and humanity as a whole. I know Daniel's a big fan of this as well! Is it really easier for the publishers to market "Boy discovers magic and goes BOOM!" than "An insightful analysis of manifest destiny through a magical adventure in a new world?" Regardless, thanks for the great content, and I love the radiation idea!

12 hour day is my normal workday too, as a wannabe writer with two kids and one on the way I need to make a schedule for my three day weekend in order to write more than an hour a week, but the schedule has to be loose enough to get around normal life with kids stuff (Why can't two year olds follow a rigorous schedule), I was home schooled though, I have a lot of experience "multitasking" (Here meaning that I have have learned to recognize moments where I can be distracted from something to do something else). Chris, You were thirteen year old me's hero because you were a famous homeschooler who had the job I wanted since I was eight.
