I saw it last week and I thought Taraji was award worthy. But the one who for sure is not only going to be nominated but actually will probably win for Best Supporting Actress is Danielle Brooks! She's the Jennifer Hudson of this awards season, calling it now. The only reason I feel Taraji may not get certain noms is because they probably wont make room for 2 actresses in the same movie in the same category...very rare. But all 3 ladies owned this movie. I think you were supposed to keep that Whoopi secret girl lol

I also watched pre-screening of The Color Purple. I taught Taraji did a wonderful job with singing and acting. She should get nominated for an Oscar. I wasn't feeling Fantasia in this movie. Therefore I'm going to see The Color Purple on Christmas Day. To see if I miss anything. The famous scenes from the original movie was cut short and the music scene in the movie was moving fast.

Great review!! Was skeptical about going to see the movie at first, because I didn't want them to mess up a classic, but because of your review, I am now looking forward to it!!! Keep up the good work!!!!

Danielle Brooks, in my opinion, gave an Oscar worthy supporting actress performance. Taraji also did great. Fantasia, I am sure will have many awards nominations. I love the original. This one was more of a play. It was okay but not better than the original.

Don’t love the ageism against Taraji, never thought about that once while watching. She really ate up the role and put her mark on it. She gave the sensual, jazzy persona perfectly. I hope the three ladies and Coleman get Oscar nominations.

Thank you for your review. I can't wait to see it. I know I will love it regardless because of interviews and the previews. Oh! So proud of the entire cast. Sometimes, there are two actors nominated in the same category. I predict without having seen the movie that both Taraji and Danielle Brooks will be nominated. And my hope is that Fantasia will be great and will be nominated. I am such a huge fan of hers.

Like most of the 80's baby generation, I saw the original movie. Nothing but love and respect for The Color Purple franchise. I will admit, the new version of the movie was of interest because of the current/fresh faces in those memorable roles, but it wasn't on my radar to see as a musical. You made it sound interesting, so maybe 🤔. Nice review 👍🏾

Fantasia played the role of Celie on Broadway back in 2007 and got rave reviews for her performance. She is one of the front runners for Best Actress. Fantasia and Danielle Brooks are both getting some nominations this awards season.

Thank you for your review. Interesting, my first introduction of Blitz Bazawule was via an Art Exhibition he had at the UTA Artist Space a few years ago. I was shocked seeing his name attached to this film because I didn’t realize he was director as well. So, I had to look him up to see what he had directed previously.
I still haven’t decided whether I will see this film though - I still have a few more weeks to decide lol. I truly just haven’t been a fan of the casting. Even just from the trailers I wondered whether Taraji was the best choice for casting. She doesn’t give me Shug either. There was something so naturally alluring about Shug, and I don’t get that from Taraji. I also just wish they had utilized more broadway actors vs recording artist…all of those casting choices have me underwhelmed despite my love of musicals. I may give it a try though. I’m not surprised Danielle Brooks is getting high praise - I’ve seen many refer to her as the standout.

I was skeptical about Taraji, and after I saw one of the trailers I noticed that they added so much autotune to her voice 😅 They really could have casted Heather Headly (who played Shug on Broadway) but I’m sure Taraji held down the acting part. I just feel like the lead roles should have gone to people who can both sing and act.

    • @ZoraNH.dusttracks1891
      @ZoraNH.dusttracks1891 9 місяців тому +1

I agree about casting people who can both act and sing. That’s one of the things that has made me hesitant to watch…So many trained actors on and off broadway who also sing could have been considered for those lead roles - some who rarely see opportunities like this. Then I saw today where Oprah mentioned Beyoncé and Rihanna were considered. Literally makes no sense. Taraji was one I was skeptical of as well when I saw the casting…I saw an interview of her last year I believe where she revealed she sings also, and wanted to focus on that more - interesting that they used autotune. When I saw the play on Broadway Heather Headley wasn’t Shug, so I didn’t even realize she has done that role. I could definitely see her in that role. I’m still skeptical though…of a few other casting choices in addition to Taraji…pretty much anyone casted who is primarily a recording artist.
Most of the praise I’ve seen so far has been around Danielle Brooks.

Well so far they have 2 acting nominations (Danielle Brooks and Fantasia). It will definitely be a tough award season for them…the movie is up against Barbie in the musical category. I believe the musical category is combine with drama as award season progresses, so then it will have Oppenheimer in the mix. So it will be interesting. The original had 11 Oscar nominations, I really don’t see that being repeated up against an original story. It will probably be a repeat of Everything Everywhere All At Once from last year.

It’s still the same story either way. I saw the movie and the broadway play….Even though it’s a musical based on the play, some of the scenes are still musical adaptions of what we’ve seen in the movie. That’s evident in the trailers alone…the comparison’s are going to happen. The previous version was a hit because it was an original story…no matter how it’s repackaged it will be difficult to duplicate the success of the originals.

Margaret Avery who played Shug Avery was only 42 years old in 1985 in the original color purple. 42
years old in black years is 32 years old. Taraji is 53 years old. Big difference.

      @@Auntie-Isleywhich is fair enough
      Movies are subjective
      Personally love her
I think your criticism in a way suggests why she was perfect casting
      E.g.
      Your criticism paraphrased
"Shug stucks out like a sore thumb among the new cast because of Taraji being among lesser known actors"
Shug is meant to be a star who sticks out ,she is meant to be this otherworldly being to Celie that's almost unreal to her
Especially considering Shug enters once the story has begun she needs to stand out amongst characters like Celie and Sophia
If Taraji wasn't an established star and this was the first time you ever saw her would you feel the same way ?
Having watched the interview clips Taraji helped Fantasia throughout filming and helped her lighten up because of the heavy material and she understands that dark roles can stay with actors
So it sounds like she was very instrumental in helping everyone be able to do their jobs behind the scenes
Which makes her casting I guess more important to the bigger picture
So maybe not necessarily what you might have wanted but what was needed to make the movie you enjoyed
      Just discussion
Thats what I thought about when I watched your review

When someone uses the analogy, "stuck out like a sore thumb", It's usually not in a good way. It was a role she should not have agreed to do because in my opinion, she did not pull it off. Many high profile actors gets great offers and turn them down because they know they can't pull it off. So many vibrant, sexy singers/actresses that could have pulled this off way better. Maybe they couldn't afford Beyonce? Beyonce did amazingly well in Caddilac records and would have oozed Shug Avery. @@shippendales8543
