- Climbing Snacks are more than just food. They can be performance enhancing aids and provide health benefits. Getting it right can mean better training sessions and better performance on your projects. But depending on the snacks you choose, they may have some negative consequences or be outperformed by alternatives. In today's episode we have one of our nutritionists, Ed Smith, talk us through the pro's and con's on some of the most common climbing snacks we see at the gym or the crag.
Many alternatives exist and we are not advocating you need any one of these foods in your diet. Personal preference and individual needs apply. So let us know what your preferred climbing snacks are and why!

you spoke at length about sport drinks. what are your recommendations for boulder and trad drinks?
Depends on length of your session
😅
underrated comment, deserves 1 million likes
@@tristanlasley8030 u didnt get the joke did you. he meant sport drinks as in drinks for sport climbing
What a play
===DRINKS===
1. Sports Drinks
- Better than water coz of electrolytes & glucose
- fast acting energy
2. Energy drinks (ie. Red bull)
- caffeine enhances performance
- Sucrose (glucose + fructose)
- sadly no electrolytes
- not necessarily bad for your health
- taken after 4pm, caffeine may affect your sleep
3. Chocolate Milk
- Post workout recovery (protein)
- overall good nutrient quality
- replenishes carbohydrates
- could be normal milk
===SNACKS===
1. Granola bar
- not cheap
- super convenient
2. Soreen
- high carbs
- may have artificial ingredients
3. Banana
- high carbs
4. Sweets
- good for energy
- could be problematic for hygiene
5. Mixed Nuts
- has protein
- very little to no carbs
Don't be afraid to transport fruit. Fyi a spotted banana or a dented apple for example are still perfectly fine to eat. Most civilized areas also have drinkable tap water which can be transported in reusable bottles. If you are a caffein lover, delicious coffee can be brewed at home for low cost. Oatmeal with banana, peanut butter and flaxseeds makes a fine and cheap breakfast and/or pre climb snack.
Also want to add dates as a possible fruit. They've got a fairly low glycemic index and are good sources of minerals and fiber. If you have a middle eastern / north african specialty store around they usually have them for pretty cheap - I buy 850g pitted, unsweetened ones for ~6€.
Lol I have boiled eggs and dates at the crag. Good for energy and protein. Plus they fill you up decently
I usually get a coffee about an hour before climbing. Sometimes a PB&J before leaving the house. Might get bananas now due to being prone to cramps.
Love my pre-climb banana(s)!
I hate climbing after having a meal that feels too filling and I just feel heavy. The bananas are a perfect lighter snack if I need one.
Great video! Personally would have loved to see a focus on healthier options, but understand that this is more useful for the average climber.
I would be interested to see the non ultra processed foods alternative suggestions to replace some of these, like a home made fruit cake to replace the malt loaf
he said it in the video that it would be possible and better to make your own loaf or clif at home
I eat some dates plus some milk. You get a lot of natural nutrients that way, you only need to be careful to not drink too much milk too fast in order to keep light haha
I knew someone who used to freeze bananas then eat them. Absolute monster.
For people allergic to Dairy and Tree-Nuts (Which rule out a lot of dairy alternatives), A frozen banana has roughly the same texture as ice cream could be why your buddy would eat frozen bananas! Or he's just weird haha!
@@Mattystem that would be too convenient of an excuse, he wasn't allergic to anything just had stange tastebuds :D
Sliced frozen banana is decent! Accidental discovery from eating smoothie fruit - it's all quite tasty frozen.
I do froze my bananas before making a banana bread, I believe (and it really feels like it) that the aroma is more intense with brown frozen banana than regular ones.
@@lailleq84 Interesting, I definitely use brown (almost black) bananas for banana bread but I'd never thought of freezing them for it.
Can we get a video on what foods/meal to eat after an intense training session?
great video and such good and deep knowledge.
a few things you have not talked about but would be cool to have your opinion about, because I just read about them and am not sure if this is all true..
- fructose can upset your stomach, that is one reason some of them contain only glucose. another reason to prefer glucose over sacharose or fructose.
- bananas that are not really ripe are pretty hard to digest and therefore provide pretty slow energy.
What about mate? We southerns drink a lot of mate (pronounced máh-teh) and since Patagonia and Cochamó are pretty popular climbing spots, mate is also pretty common between climbers, more common even than pure water I dare to say. Also mate is often paired with nuts or cookies during rests. I don't think I've seen in the crag other than mate, cookies, nuts and fruit, never seen a red bull or an isotonic drink. Indoors is either mate or pure water, never saw anyone eating at the gym.
Not from the south but mate is definitely my favorite drink to bring (other than water) to the crag, specifically bouldering. Though, if I have a really long day with multiple pitches I do like a sports drink for replenishing electrolytes.
Great vid guys! Missed the snickers(my snack of choice) and chocolate, your not you when your hungry!
Also would be good to see which snacks were good for pre session during and post like you did the drinks, maybe a part 2? 😉
The same rules apply:
Pre:
- performance enhancements (ie caffeine)
- general energy (depending on intensity and volume of session)
during:
- electrolytes when sweating a lot or long session
- readily available energy
Post:
- refill glycogen storages (some fast energy, but now we can transition back to low GI)
- protein
Minerals and vitamins as well as whole food and natural ingredients are always good and important
Completely agree ! I was really hopping to see that in the video. Maybe a part 2 talking about this matter and some other snacks? I was a bit surprised not seing dry fruits on the table for example... and what about vegetal milks like soy or oat ?
Cheers
12:21 living in Brasil eating a cold banana has come handy many times! Just chop it in pieces, some granola and wheat, maybe some mangos, on the fridge for 30min to cool It down and it's bussin
Shoutout to anyone else who also carries a banana case for its anti-smush effects!
I have used a banana guard for years, very handy for taking the skin home for composting.
I go for a coffee in the mid morning, then bring an whey isolate protein for sipping on through the day and also a amino acid bcaa 2:1:1 drink towards the end of the session/driving home for muscle recovery. For food I bring a protein bar for an extra boost. Eat big protein meal when home.
I love making my own snacks, homemade protein granola bars are my go too (when I want them). Although I’m not a big snacker
Good video but worth considering maybe is how much comes in plastic packets. The environment is more important than our climbing sessions. I'm as guilty here as anyone but increasingly I have this feeling that my priorities need to shift. Climbers in general are some of the most eco aware people I know so I know I'm not alone!
Definitely agree! Somebody mentioned old fashioned hard boiled eggs, dates and bananas and coffee, green tea or yerba mate for a drink. These are all much better choices than sugar-filled plastic packaged snacks or drinks. Highly recommend Tim Spector's Spoon Fed book for a thoroughly researched impact of food on our bodies.
id be interested to see what the climbing elite eat, before, during and after climbing
Carrots, carrots, carrots
The blood of team kids. Brekky Lunch and Dinner
Coca-cola missing... (similar to red bull probably but cheaper and with less caffeine)
Satsumas - the ultimate multi-pitch snack? A bit of fluid, bit of sugar. Never seem to get squished if kept in front pocket; wouldn’t go well stuffed in trousers though.
Great snack review, my only nitpick is that I think convenience should include packaging disposability. Banana ftw I guess, no-one likes carrying trash around but many of these packaging wont be realistically recycled even when disposed of correctly :/. Just some food for thought hehe
well, you shouldn't just throw banana peels anywhere...
As a Canadian, I've never heard of Soreen before... Or even malt loaf, generally.
It is analogous to a fruitcake?
Surprised and to be honest a bit disappointed to see things like red bull on that table. Artificial flavors and colorants, and a ton of sucrose (not the best and well above optimal concentration) ...
There are bananas taper so is not damaged
I live off clif bars
haribo contains gelatine and therefore protein and collagen - so if red bull is pretty good i feel haribo should do the job too haha
Haribo is made from scraping dead pig hides. Ho for it if you can stomach that
@@constanceelaine3909 yes. its from dead animal parts from pork and beef mainly skin. collagen powder is also from animal source
@@constanceelaine3909 the same as bone broth... delicious 😋
The only fruit I ever see mentioned in context of climbing snacks is the banana. How does it compare to other fruit? And is the main benefit of bananas just feeling like a monkey?
Convenience and hygiene? Apples work too, pears and other fruits.
They do have quite high magnesium though, which is nice for sports
It's dates for me, they survive really well being stuffed into the bottom of a bag and are pretty much just sugar and fibre
@@decklundy and potassium! Love me some dates as well
@@decklundy dates for me too.
My fave snack at the crag is an apple and a small container of peanut butter. I bring a spoon along to eat bites of PB w each bite of apple. Fiber/Fat/protein combo in PB allows for slow energy release (ie sustaining energy) and the apple provides quick energy… I tend to climb all day so I prefer snack choices that check all boxes with fewer items.
Where is the natural fruit juice at?
Wait, what's wrong with cold bananas???
some timestamps would be helpful in these kind of videos
red bull is cheaper than a coffe???? for sure not if you cooke the coffe at home!! and it id definately not healty, you don´t have to be a nutritionist to tell the!!! it is full of artificial stuff...don´t be lazy!!!
Cold banana turns black, but they're still good to eat 😁
But what about carrots??
Ya'll sleeping on kiwi fruit. So much vitamin A, fibre, Vitamin C, way more potassium than a banana, and if you can keep the skin on, even more of each (especially A and fibre).
wow that video ist way wose than expectetd. Why would I want them to rank diffrent type of snacks in terms of convenience??? It takes like actual 5 min of the video without notciable use, LOL
I don’t think sugar and caffeine is the best to energy your sessions and less coming from a red bull. Your energy is better coming from quality proteins and quality carbs. Basically you guys recommend sugar in their different presentation.. amazed of what was recommended by this channel , was expecting better advice at nutritional level
Well, there's a reason for that. You should do some research on glucose and performance. There's a reason runners and bikers eat sports gels while they ride, and elite athletes drink sugary drinks like Gatorade. It's because it is the most effective way to provide your muscles energy.
@@therootb i think u should really do your research deeper than what u see in tv, Gatorade is crap owned by Coca-Cola
@@humbertolopez2627 that is asinine.
@@therootb keep ur mc Donald’s going dude
@@humbertolopez2627 you don't have to be a dick about it.
I would say this is one of lattices lowest quality video
This is such poor advice. Bring slow carbs and acutal meals.
You forgot about the suffering cows go through for the chocolate milk
Whole peanut butter on granary bread is the only crag food.
Mushrooms are Keto Friendly lol
Gummi bears? Really? Are there a bunch of kindergartens at the crag? 🤣 if you're gonna have a sweet at the crag, why not chocolate?
Gummy bears are a tasty snack for all ages!
Chocolate in 80degress no thanks lol
Chocolate has fat and milks which slows down the digestion and absorption of the sugars (energy). Gummy bears and fruit snacks are literally pure sugar.
any TLDR? would rly appreciate it :D
Blueberries, bananas, boiled eggs, protein bars, dried fruit and nuts!
How would dry fruits/ fruit leather fare in terms of energy and health?
Depends on quantity
