    I am so glad these women pens were made. Now the manliness of normal pens won't break my hands and spirit from the sheer manliness attacking my delicate female flower soul.

    I think it's hilarious that pink and purple are considered "girl colors", when purple used to be the color of kings (because purple dye for clothing was expensive as hell back in the middle ages due to the fact it was made by crushing a rare beetle) and pink was a "boy's color" until the 1940s, when Hitler used a pink triangle to mark homosexuals.

      Also, men were generally the more decorated and wore make up, wigs, clothes with ruffles and high heels. Women generally wore plainer colors, practical dresses and covered up hair. It’s only in recent 100 years that it’s switched around.

    Whenever women say "I'm not a feminist" or "I don't believe in feminism" I feel like they have sorely missed the point of what feminism is... Feminism is NOT about hating men or saying women should take over the world. Ignore all the extremist feminists. Feminism is about equality.
    Why are people not calling this movement 'equality' instead of 'Feminism' then? Because a lot of the changes we need to enact need to begin with the way women are treated. We mustn't forget that a lot of women in less-developed countries are still fighting for rights that we take for granted. Female genital mutilation is still a huge thing in certain parts of continental Africa.
    If you say you don't believe in Feminism you're just making light of all the work of earlier feminists. That means you don't think we should be allowed to have jobs, have our own finances, use birth control or vote. Men would also not be able to take up jobs that are stigmatised as being "female" because of the negative associations with it eg makeup artists, nurses, etc.

    • @evec2308
      @evec2308 9 років тому +9

      If you meet self-proclaimed 'feminists' that say that men are 'pigs' and 'rapists', honestly those people are feminazis and aren't indicative of what feminists really think. Their extreme opinions just cause more misunderstandings and ridicule, and should rightly be put to a stop, but the things that true feminists fight for should not be lumped into the same group. I suggest you get away from those feminazis and acquaint yourself with feminists, because you have got the idea totally wrong.

    • @evec2308
      @evec2308 9 років тому +3

      Feminists support equality, but their focus is on issues that affect females. i.e. combating problems that affect females in order to ensure there is equality. Different movements have their own desired goals.
      With respect to your statement about feminists always being unreasonable/ extreme, you'll often find that empty vessels make the most noise, so you'll find a lot of ignorant so-called 'feminists' with pointless endeavours that ruin the image of what being a feminist is.
      Also, such ignorant people are given more media coverage because they sell papers and airtime. They are entertaining.
      I'm sorry you have such a terrible idea of what feminists are, and I know that there are a lot of issues that fall into those difficult grey areas, and that there are men that fall through the cracks and lose custody of children/ are abused as well. However, the fact that violence against women, particularly sexual abuse/ domestic abuse/ date rape etc is a growing and worrying statistic, means that we need to cut down on these numbers asap and that's why that has been given so much focus.
      I read your other comments and I'm glad to see that you're only against radical feminists and do support women's rights/issues. Sadly not everyone shares your views. Thank you for that, though.

    • @evec2308
      @evec2308 9 років тому +6

      DId I say I ONLY fight for women's issues? I said that feminists support women's issues and try to resolve them. Also you can't just define feminists as being 'middle-class', we come in all sorts of classes, races, nations.
      My identity is not solely defined as a 'feminist'. I am a 'middle-class' citizen, fighting for things that everyone fights for as well. Better healthcare, better laws, better education, stopping racism, stopping LGBTQ+ hate, et cetera. This means that I support and believe in many causes and being a feminist does not mean that I =ONLY= support issues that affect women. Everyone is made up of a multitude of identities- their race, religion, sex, other beliefs. Do not whittle me down to simply being a 'narcissistic female'.
      You presume too much. If you think that I don't care about men, then so be it. There is no arguing with you. I already conceded that there are many issues, many problems, and that your arguments are valid. I have acknowledged that you have a point. If you're going to persist in insisting that I am a selfish, narcissistic person, then so be it. I know what I support, all the many causes I stand for, and not all of them are selfish in nature.

    • @nickiminajownsapanda
      @nickiminajownsapanda 9 років тому +5

      ***** Your main focus can be on one thing because it is a big problem. That does not mean you cannot focus on other issues. You are arguing for very little reason, as no one is patronizing you or belittling your ideas. We advocate for the rights that women and men should have, but it just so happens that women do not have those rights. I have done intense research, especially recently, and I am only 16, but can understand that women are still not given what they deserve. And it is meant to be selfish; if you want to look after yourself, you need to be selfish. We are not vindictive in our goals. We apologize if our ideals don't match yours. I would also like to add, as a side note, that males can be feminists, and can realize and understand that women are still not treated equally. I am not sure why you are constantly trying to argue with the people who have commented on here; it makes you seem very stubborn and regressive, and the people who have commented other than you have been quite kind in their comments, whereas you are overly critical (although this is my personal interpretation, and I am not imposing on your character).

    Its absolutely unnecessary to put any kind of gender label on products, especially pens. Like some of you people stated on the comments, men and women both have the same hand structure. For heaven's sake, no need to specify pens for each gender, with colors that are liked by some girls and stereotyped as every woman's favorite colors.

      We should all wear the same underwear too. Because fuck it, marketing something towards a specific gender is a crime. I should be getting upset about how Gillette makes different razor blade for men and women. I get that they should of offered more colors to avoid stereotypes, but the fact is men and women have different hands. If someone makes a pen that fits a woman's hand why get upset about it?

      Toma Valentin I don't know. Cosmetics are just cosmetics, men could wear them too. There are perfumes and scents that we consider feminine and masculine, but you don't necessarily have to label it as "for men" or "for women" instead you could use colours and names.
      A purple bottle with the scent "lavender" should be plenty.

      Sir Isaac I get what Ellen did and agree, but there is indisputable evidence that pink colored items attract female consumers, whether pink is a women stereotype or not. Facebook the article about Michelin ect - they came out with pink vehicle tires (yes I know), and there were thousands of comments of women tagging other women and how they all loved it.

      Sir Isaac there's a woman on extreme makeover home edition that wears/uses pink tools and construction clothing to "still be girly" in the man fueld business. Ellen has made a great point that most people are missing here. Not only that women get paid less but that womens products are also more expensive. This is called a PINK TAX. Yes, it has a name and it exists in many countries. Of course that in much more "EQUAL" and "FREE" countries than the united states they have banned this tax because it makes no sense to make women pay more just because their products are for women only. Man I love Europe.. And Ellen ;)

      Yes. This angers me and I have ranted about this many times.. Not only do women get paid less in some jobs, but everything marketed towards women always costs more.. Soap, deodorant, razors, clothes... Not to mention the fact that we have to buy things that men will never have to worry about, such as bras or tampons (ever calculate how much you spend yearly on those items alone? It hurts my soul)... This pen is just an ordinary pen.. only difference is that it's smaller and comes in pink or purple.. I doubt it will enhance my writing. Why would I pay more for it? Why not label it just a "pen for smaller hands" because as people already pointed out, children too have smaller hands... So stupid!

      The wage gap is actually a myth. That study that suggested that was based off the average salary per year a women makes(not based off her job just the average of all working women's salary) vs how much a male makes. The only thing this study could suggest is that men tend to work in higher paying jobs. Plus if this was true why don't all business owners hire women since there cheaper to pay and after all were equal(based off what others claim)

    • @VIIStar
      @VIIStar 9 років тому +4

      dylan peacock " Plus if this was true why don't all business owners hire women since there cheaper to pay and after all were equal(based off what others claim)"
      This is because men are seen as inherently more valuable just because they are men, regardless of experience, skill, or education comparable to an equal female candidate for the same job. So the employer chooses the man, falsely thinking they're getting a better employee, worth a higher paycheck and somehow more qualified because of their gender.

    • @ThotProphet
      @ThotProphet 8 років тому +3

      +dylan peacock And why are there less women working in higher paying jobs? Why are there so little women (and colored people) the farther up into management and politics? Why are more women not pursuing jobs in STEM fields? Why does what a manager say about a resume change when the only thing that's different is the names gender? Why was there a well recognized scientist, who when she changed to be female overheard someone criticizing her paper saying "Her work is good, but not as good as her brother." when she had no brother... We don't live in a vacuum, these things don't happen just because.

    They say feminists are always ready to get angry at everything and don't have a sense of humor, but reading the comments it seems to me like the exact opposite. All these people talking about women and men's purpose on the planet and stuff.. hello, this is supposed to be funny. Ellen is a (great) comedian and is supposed to make fun at those kind of things, it's her job. Get over yourself, geez.

    • @Kjraider2009
      @Kjraider2009 6 років тому

      But... its, not funny? I mean, maybe a simpleton will laugh at this, but its just basic as hell... And doesn't relate with anyone. For example, if you like pink and purple, you buy the pen and it has a cosmetic satisfaction for a little extra cost. The pen is meant for women, so naturally they will market more towards that demographic.. Now, if you don't like the pen, you don't buy it. What is the joke based on, a pen? Its just not funny, and Ellen is assuming BIC is coming from a condescending standpoint, when they really are simply trying to give women a choice to have a pen just for them or to buy the regular crap. There is no setup for this joke, its boring and simple. Only a radical feminist would find this humorous.

    If you think about it, the BIC marketing department made a smart move by calling Ellen to be their spokesperson (if they did actually call her). They knew, being a feminist, she would rant on about the pen and give them free publicity. You know what they say, any publicity is good publicity. About the pen, I agree they shouldn't have said the line is just for women, although you will rarely find a man using a pink pen...

    • @SikforSenses

    Gendered items are just so stupid. and the stupidity cuts both way. Did you know that there was some bakery store selling doughnuts for men and they seriously called it "Bronut"? And their products looks the exactly the same as any other doughnuts, with some of the same fillings... only they choose to market it as somehow being more "macho" than the everyday doughnuts that women and men buy on a regular basis. on top of it, they made it more overpriced for the macho doughnuts.
    In a way I guess that's one way men gets a taste of what women go though everyday. most of the feminine products are actually the exact same as men's, such as shaving razors. the price is hiked up so that women end up paying more for the same exact product that men are buying too. It's only the packaging that is different, but the product on the inside is the exact same. when you really think about it, it's just stupid.

    From experience I can give a specific example in one office setting. In a veterinary office where I worked, the male tech had been employed by the office for the shortest period of time, and was given the 'head tech' position over every other technician (all female) even though he was bested by seniority, and one tech he was promoted over had 20 someodd years experience in her field, experience in another clinic as office manager, and 6 years with the office to his 1.

    I really don't see how this product is in any way offensive to women, and I strongly believe no one would have even noticed this product nor had any bone to pick with it had Ellen not brought it up. Tons of companies make versions of their product in pink or purple and then brand it as being for ladies, and it has nothing to do with saying the product is inferior or for inferior people -- that's totally ridiculous. If women tend to buy more pink and purple products (whatever the underlying reason may be), then it's no one's fault the companies keep making them other than that of the people who keep buying them and perpetuating a demand for such products. Furthermore, if the pen was designed to be more ergonomic for smaller hands (which is a biological reality of being female), then that's simply a harmless product design issue, and it's absolutely absurd to fabricate some story that BIC had any intention in making a product that would be "divisive" in any way. It's simply another pink/purple product among millions. Ellen is a brilliant comedian and an admirable activist, but this must have simply been a slow day at the office for Ellen's writers.

    • @akpokemon

      You said all of that very well. Every time I thought of something to add, you addressed it.

    • @sixheadeddog
      @sixheadeddog 9 років тому +9

      First, just because you don't see how it's offensive to women doesn't meant it's not offensive to women, nor does it mean that women have no right to be offended by it just because you don't see how it's offensive. The offense likely has everything to do with perspective and history, and it is a gross demonstration of male privelege to say "Well, because I don't see the offense, you women must be acting irrationally again."
      Second, "designed to be more ergonomic for smaller hands" is not a "biological reality of being female." It is a biological reality of having smaller hands. The fact of the matter is that, while it may be statistically more likely for an average woman to have smaller hands than an average man, there is nothing about a pen designed for smaller hands that makes it intrinsically "for her." Does that make a woman who doesn't find the grip of a "for her" pen less feminine? Does it make a man who likes the feel of a "for her" pen less masculine?
      If you don't see how this product is offensive to women, I don't see how it could NOT be offensive to human beings. It is ridiculous to market something as gender-specific when it is as ubiquitous to human life and has as little to do with the gender differences between men and women as a PEN.

    • @alexwasson3371
      @alexwasson3371 9 років тому +3

      sixheadeddog The fact that you can be so angry about something with such little importance shows how you are as a person. You're angry at the world and hate men. Considering the company took the time, energy, and money to create a pen they feel would fit a smaller hand better goes against everything you are saying. Shouldn't men be mad that there wasn't a pen designed specifically for them? Oh wait, that's right, a normal person wouldn't care.

      I don't feel offended by the product, but I do think it's quite ridiculous. They also asked Ellen to advertise the product! The reality is that these pens did not sell, and the idea is a flop because it's silly and unnecessary to have different writing utensils for "him"/"her".

  • @rawkarpojk

    The sad thing about all this are two things. If I know marketing as I think I do, this is probably based on a public opinion. I don't think that only the people at BIC has been sitting around going "hey! We need a pen for women". Someone has probably written an e-mail or something like that and said they wanted a pen for women. Sad thing #2 is that these will probably sell pretty well. Women and men who don't really give a hoot about equality will go and buy these thinking that there is a product aimed at them or as a great gift for the little 'ol lady.
    As Macklemore said "No freedom until we're equal" but sadly enough...we're not there yet...
