      Thanks - we determined that this one doesn't like lower powered ammo - challenge is, it appears to be marketed to the competition market. Many IDPA and/or USPSA folks work their loads to get as close to the minimum power factor as possible. I've seen strange ejection w/low powered ammo, but failure to eject doesn't happen with the same ammo in other competition guns I've used (Glock 34, Springfield XDm 5.25, CZ SP-01, M&P9 Pro, P320 X-Five, etc.). I guess what I'm saying is that if Canik wanted to create a pistol that would run well in the competition market, they would make sure their pistol ran 115 to 147 ammo that was at least factory spec. I've read Canik has told folks they need to run 124 NATO for the best reliability. But then, some folks report their pistol runs fine with 147 grain, so maybe the lower power factor is the only issue, or maybe quality control of the recoil springs is the issue. Either way, the Canik TP9SFx has quite a bit of feature packed into a low cost pistol, but if you want to run close to the power factor for USPSA or IDPA, be advised you may have problems.

  • @MikeC555
    @MikeC555 7 років тому +8

    The TP9SFX spring is way too heavy by standards. Especially when your shooting Freedom 147, which is some of the lowest load I've fired. You can try lighter spring from PPQ M2 but I've heard running nato 9mm to break in works very well. BTW my TP9SFX seen nothing but AE 147 flat point, not one hiccup.

      Thanks Mike, it amazes me how many folks have had gems that work well right off, and then how many have had problems. We ran 115 through it and it worked fine, but 124 failed occasionally, and 147 was a jam-o-matic. We like 147 Freedom for USPSA/IDPA because it is so close to the lowest power factor and yet it drops steel without exception. My buddy sold it to someone who won't be shooting 147 grain, so it's off to a new home. Glad your pistol works, they are very nice for sure.

    Wow, so how does it run with 124 grn or is that not available in your area? I'm under the impression that the TP9sfx was a pistol designed as a Target Shooter at the range or at pistol competitions coming in at a lower price point than others. Seems like you're running the gun to two extremes beyond what the recoil spring was originally designed for.

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 4 роки тому

      Most competition shooters run 124 or 147 and lower power factor, so 147 should run just fine. We ran 115 grain with the best overall performance, but if you read the comments - many people reported the same problems. I agree it's a lower price point, and I believe that there are some quality control issues with recoil springs from the factory. Many folks reported that after contracting the vendor, they were sent new recoil springs. It is a very nice pistol for the money - but my buddy sold it so I can't test anymore ammo.

      Hi ExxonV! Hmm... Do you know if the new recoil springs helped or improved it's functioning? I typically just run 115 or 124 grn in my 9mm's. I saw one of these at my LGS at $469 and thought it might be fun to try it out. I've been researching other video's also to see what others have experienced. I 'm not planning on running 147 grn in the Canik, but I don't want to jump into a gun having potential issues.

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 4 роки тому

      Yes! I've heard that the replacements make it run fine - the chances of you needing one are slim though, it seems the number of people who get a bad recoil spring are not super high. The pistol is a steal at that price - Optics Ready, sweet trigger, great ergonomics and nice high-cap mags. I also believe you can use the same sights you can get for the Walther PPQ, so in my book, it's a good buy - just know that if you have problems cycling ammo, get that spring replaced! Good luck!

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 Рік тому

      Sorry to hear it. The recoil should allow the extraction to occur, the ejector and extractor work together to get the fired case out. The parts used are the recoil spring, extractor and ejector. Weak ammo can be a problem, but if you're using factory ammo, that's likely not the issue. Recoil springs need to be strong enough to move the slide while maintaining enough resistance to protect the slide and frame. If the pistol worked for thousands of rounds and is getting worse now, it could be the recoil spring. If it's happening after a few hundred rounds, it might be the extractor or ejector. The extractor is the part on the slide that is next to the port where the cases fly out. If that part is broken, it can't grab the case rim to pull the case out of the chamber. Check for a "lip" that would grab cases by their rims. If that looks good, check the ejector. This is a "rod" looking part in the frame that sticks out. It's job is to help push the case out during extraction. Rare, but that part can break off. Good luck!!!

Do they take a while to break the recoil spring in good or what? I’ve got used to the follow up with it and it is a very accurate pistol. Thanks for the note - it was my friend's TP9SFx and we both thought the ergos and the overall fit and finish was great, trigger was awesome, but we had too many problems with the extraction/ejection for 147 grain ammo. I'm guessing if we'd replaced the recoil spring w/something lighter it would've cleaned up. My P320 X-Five initially had some issues similar until I lowered the recoil spring from 15lb to 12lb, now it runs great. However, my friend decided to sell it, so we never changed recoil springs. I'd suggest you reach out to Canik and ask them for a different recoil spring - from what I've read, they are good about sending them.

      Yeah, that's good - not everybody has had the issue - my guess is that there is a small quality control issue w/the recoil spring for some folks. The pistol is a great value for the money, when they run, they are every bit as good as the Walther PPQ they copied, for a fraction of the price! www.handgunhero.com/compare/canik-tp9sfx-vs-walther-ppq-q5-match-m2

      I hope your pistol runs well! From what I've read, some run 147 out of the box, some need the spring changes. I think it comes down to quality of the springs vs. quality of the firearm. This Canik is basicially a copy (almost exact) of the Walther PPQ, but you get the optics option, great trigger, great capacity, and great color for a lower price! If you don't get the one that runs 147 well, just get the springs upgraded - I'm sure you'll love the pistol. It was a joy to shoot when it ran for us :).

      Hurricane Tai Or, possibly the ejector is not in exact alignment. I noticed some of the rounds were bouncing forward. It's almost like the brass is impacting the center of the ejector, instead of towards the left side, as it should be. You're right tho.... Most likely an extractor issue.

    I own SFX- They intentionally made the SFX for gunnin and running. Comp! FAST! So they put heavy spring in it for purposes of PLUS P Ammo and 124 grain which has hotter load powder in it. So shooting anything else AKA cheaper ammo you most likely going to suffer problems. Theres No need for recall it intentional. If you want to shoot cheaper ammo like me just change spring out. I emailed them and are sending me new one for free. In mean while I lock my pistol open during the night with full mag next to it just in case and this may well fix problem as some other SFX owners have said worked. Ill rack the slide 100 times a day for 10 days loosen that spring up a bit. I bought mine new and took to range and had out of 300 rds 115 grain Fiocchi 11 or 12 stove pipes. Very annoying but at that time i didnt know about the Plus p rating for this pistol and its spring.

    I wonder if adding a threaded barrel and suppressor would work with 147 since it is usually subsonic anyway?

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 5 років тому +1

      I'm not sure - 147 didn't run well through our model - it only ran 115 reliably. Good luck!!!

  • @CB-68-westcreations
    @CB-68-westcreations 7 років тому +1

    Is the 147 marked subsonic? I know most lf it would be sub sonic anyway, but when loaded intentionally for that, they are usually charged lighter as well.

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 7 років тому +1

      Yep, it's subsonic - we can shoot 115 through 100% reliable, 124 as well, but 147 isn't working well. The rub for me, I run 147 through all my competition guns with the same ammo (Glock 34, XDm 5.25, CZ SP-01 Shadow, P320, P320 X-Five, S&W M&P9 Pro and M2.0 5", P226 Legion/TacOps, etc. - shot all those this last year in IDPA/USPSA Matches). They all run Freedom Munitions 147 New and Reman just fine (along with 115/124 grain). The Canik TP9SFx seems to be marketed as a competition gun (at least we though so, 5" barrel, awesome trigger, Optics Ready), so we were surprised it would not run a competition load. I know we can run 115 or 124, or I can work up a load for 147 that will run, but one goal is to be as close to minimum power factor as possible, and while I can run that ammo in all the other pistols noted above, we can't get it to run in the Canik TP9XFx. If someone is not looking to run it for competition, or doesn't care about 147 grain subsonic minimum power factor loads, then this is an incredible buy, but if they want a pistol that runs like the other competition pistols noted above (that run 147 lower power loads), they might be disappointed. To me, the quest for a recoil spring that works with a lower power load is the best bet - for the extra $50 or less, you have one heck of a pistol with the Canik TP9SFx - just bummed it won't run w/out the fix - but hey, it is what it is :).

    • @CB-68-westcreations
      @CB-68-westcreations 7 років тому

      If its rated for plus p, It should have a stronger spring than the standard rated pistols. Which will buffer the recoil better. The downside is the subsonic ammo wont create enough pressure to move the slide enough to eject properly. A good gunsmith can calibrate the spring to run the subsonic. But then the +P would wear the gun out much faster. Just a "different" spring wont necessarily change anything. Its likely the same tension as the original.

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 7 років тому

      Thanks - makes sense, I just find it interesting that Canik would rate it for Plus P - probably due to NATO 9mm vs. trying to really capture the US Competition Market (my guess). Plus P would wear it down I'm sure, seems to be a pretty solid pistol though. Thanks again Doug!

      :) - they are pretty inexpensive, and from what I've been told (in the comments), there are some that run just fine out of the box w/all ammo - but not all. They come w/a great option for optics, an incredible trigger, and I've also been told they can be tweaked with a new recoil spring. But for me (in 2018), out of the box should work on any sample (maybe I'm just picky). My Glock, Sig, M&P, and CZ pistols will all run any production ammo (115/124/147) out of the box - that's why we were disappointed. Can't go wrong with Glock - but those Gen 5 MSRP prices (which Glock holds dealers to very strictly) are high right now! A Gen3 or Gen4 is a great value unless you are a lefty and want the ambi-slide release, then the G5 is the best option. Good luck!

      @exxonv1719 7 років тому +1

      Thanks Cramer. I've read those myself and while I understand that is their break-in requirement, is that noted in their manual? Also, it's 2017 and I just find it hard to believe a modern day pistol would require that to be reliable. If Century is going to market a pistol in the United States, you'd think they'd either have an updated RGS from the factory that works with 115 - 147 grain ammo like other companies (Glock, Sig, Smith, Walther, H&K), or they'd made sure it was stamped all over the package (MUST USE NATO 124 FOR BREAK IN PERIOD). Either way, it's a nice pistol for sure, but I personally will pass on one due to the problems we've seen with them. Not shooting the messenger :) - just pointing out my personal frustration with Century/Canik.

Once I ran 100 round of Winchester White Box 124 Nato thru it things totally changed: I've had or still own all the Brands you mention. Never had top break any in. I will say this Canik slide to frame fit is tight for a Poly gun. Maybe that has something to do with in. As for owners manuals . I haven't read an owners manual for many years. • @TheDroneAngle
    @TheDroneAngle 7 років тому +1

    I hate to get into this, but...IMO, it depends on the power factor you are running. You run 147 because of the softer recoil. 147 requires less powder for the same power factor and thus there is less (potential, turned into kinetic) energy available to be turned into operating the slide. That energy has to fight the recoil spring. The slide needs to go back far enough and with enough ummpfh (like the technical term?) left for the cartridge to bounce out when it hits the extractor. One of the things that I believe you are doing during break-in is weakening the slide spring (from factory). Try a weaker recoil spring for higher grain ammo.

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 7 років тому

      No argument here, all that is what I understand as well. How many other production 9mm striker fired guns NEED to have hot ammo to run? I own most of them (Glock, Sig, Springfield, Smith & Wesson, etc.) and they all run 115 to 147 just fine. That's my point really. Sell a striker fired 9mm handgun targeted at the competition or carry market in the US, and it should meet the same standard (my opinion, I know). Everyone admits the gun won't run weak ammo, but all my other 9's do just fine.

    • @TheDroneAngle

      I shoot a Limited Pro and you have to change springs between different ammo power factors. My Walther PPQ and my former SA XDM 4.5 needed spring changes too to improve reliability...just saying. It would be interesting to see how extensive a testing process gun manufacturers have for different ammo types and power factors. Did the problem work itself out after a month of shooting it or did you contact the importer?

    • @exxonv1719
      @exxonv1719 7 років тому +1

      Hey Rob, I'm not familiar with a Limited Pro, but I did shoot a PPQ M2 in USPSA Production Minor and it did great w/147 Freedom. My XDm 5.25 also did great with the same ammo in USPSA Production, both of those matches are on the channel. I agree, it would be interesting to see how extension the testing goes - my guess is that Canik had some QC problems with their springs, cause I have conflicting info in the comments about what ammo works. We were able to test 115 grain and ran the better part of a case through the TP9SFx and it ate everything w/out problems, but as soon as we went back to 147, it was a jam-o-matic. My buddy did contact the importer, they mailed him a new spring, and he promptly sold the gun, so we can't test it anymore. Someone got a great deal though, as he included a Vortex Venom and the springs. I hope they run 115 grain or 124 NATO :).
