Is Iron Man Citizen Kane? Is Barbie the story of The Wizard of Oz? On The Deep Dive and New Rockstars channels, Erik Voss has often shared his film analysis theory that Citizen Kane and The Wizard of Oz were so influential to American cinema that every film since, either intentionally or unintentionally, have tapped into one of those two story types and core myths unique to the American experience. In this video, Erik finally explains what this means.
Welcome to The Deep Dive, a new channel in the New Rockstars Digital Network. Hosted by Erik Voss, The Deep Dive is the destination for more pointed media investigations. From full seasons of Marvel streaming shows to cult classic films, Erik will dig to the roots of the hidden agendas beneath every title.

Always gonna come to Shang-Chi's defense -- I don't think it's an unwieldy mix of the two, I think Wenwu's story specifically is a Citizen Kane one, and Shang-Chi's story is a Wizard of Oz one, and the movie spins on the struggle between the inherent cynicism of Wenwu/Kane and the inherent optimism of Shang-Chi/Oz.

If you want to go more down this film study route, I would love to hear your thoughts about how differently my wife and I watch movies. I try to be in the moment and put myself into the shoes of the character. I treat it like an escape. My wife on the other hand, treats it like a puzzle. She's guessing what's happening the whole way. And she knows enough patterns in film that she often guessed correctly. Does the film maker care which type of audience member we are? Is one of us viewing it wrong?
