- A shooting game where the Rocket Launcher is under YOUR control. YOU make it move back and forth across the screen to launch Rockets that will eliminate your attackers. These attackers are displayed in groups, called 'racks', across the top of the screen. The first rack is made up of a small number of attackers. The second rack is made up of a larger number of these attackers. And intermixed with the racks of attackers is a rack with only a single fire-breathing Devil's head.
The attackers and the Devil's Head will try to wipe out your Rocket Launcher. If they do, you lose one player. In emergencies, you have a Shield which goes all around your Rocket Launcher for a short period of time. It is activated by pushing the Shield button on the control console. BUT BE CAREFUL!! This consumes a lot of power and will only last a VERY SHORT TIME!
Each attacker eliminated will cause a Bridge Section to appear at the lower left corner of the screen EXCEPT : when there is already a Bridge Section there or when you have a Bridge Section in tow under your Rocket Launcher. Pick these Sections up with your Rocket Launcher and move them over to build a Bridge across the gorge at the right side of the screen leading into the land of SATAN.
When you complete your Bridge into the land of SATAN, you can cross it and do battle with him. If you win you will be rewarded by increased fire power for your Rocket Launcher. If SATAN defeats you, you lose one player.
As your skill level increases, the number of attackers is increased and the speed that the fire-breathing Devil's Head moves is increased also.
Bonus Rocket Launchers are awarded to you periodically throughout the game as you reach or pass certain preselected point values. Each attacker has an assigned point value.
The object of the game is to HAVE FUN while constantly improving your skills as you play, eliminating as many attackers as possible each time to get the highest score.
I can’t believe I remembered this game. The graphics were really good for 1981. Plus it was a crazy concept. And ridiculously hard, as you start to see a few minutes in.
This is one of my all-time favorite games from the 80's. The shield function was great for gameplay. Fold memories.
The Devil guy from Wreck-It Ralph is from that game and prefers to be called Saitine
"Thanks, Satan."
"It's Saitine, actually."
My favorite game I used to play this game when station break was still opening
I remember spending my week's allowance on this arcade on Sundays.
Stumbled on the title of this game in another article and it triggered a memory of p[laying this as a kid. I remember it now at Aladdin's Castle at my local mall. Time to find other lost memories of games!
this used to be my favorite in the 80's!
Holy crap I jumped out of my seat when all the green monsters started coming like 100 at a time.
I remember when this was out in the 80's some of the parents (my Mom included) saw this game and FREAKED because of how "evil" the name was. I played it anyway when I got the chance. I can only imagine how twisted they would have been if I was younger and Mortal Kombat came out, I know some parents acted like it was the end of the world.
I remember I saw this a miniature golf place once when I was a kid. It really gave me the heebie-jeebies looking at it.
Damn generation X'ers. We need another Vietnam to thin out their ranks a little
Well it was right around the time of the satanic panic
I'm sure the guys at Williams were somewhat influenced by this when they designed Sinistar. One of my favorite games from the time. The other rare one being Elevator Action.
Hmmmmmmmm Chris, I'll bet the house you had your "ups" and "downs" with Elevator Action the way I did!
:D
[sorry about that one -- I just couldn't resist!]
I used to play this back in the early 80s in the gold mine gameroom in Almeda mall in Houston, Texas.
I used all my money as a young boy on this game at the local arcade, making sure I was on top list all the time
Played this at six flags in Georgia.
Only place I ever saw the game
in my top 10 arcade games.. a classic!
The best game at Circus Circus Las Vegas when I was a kid. :)
That was after watching the scantly clad woman turn into a gorilla and breaking out of the enclosure and scaring the crap out of everyone. We all ran out of there, then ended up at the arcade machines. Back then they had a real buffet with the large plates and great food.
👿 This game was iconic.😅
The song playing in the background is "Ride of the Valkyries" by Richard Wagner, used in A 🙃 🎥 and best-known as Daniel Bryan's Entrance Theme, albeit rearranged.
Used to play this all the time at a U Totem on Air Depot in Midwest City Oklahoma back in the early 80s
The sound makes me feel 14 again! Lol
How old are you?
The developers of a few intellivision games ripped off the sounds from this game for games like Frog Bog.
That Devil is Satine from Wreck-It Ralph
One of my many favorites.
Just the name of this game sums up the whole 1980's video games harsh 3 lifes no fuckin continues and after that you are fucked, game over & starting at the very beginning.
Mysterious pixel background graphic.
I played Midway Arcade Origins days ago but I used to play centipede and I’m good at my job by exterminating insects 🐜 , spiders 🕷 by anticipating their moves I did this by anticipation and I seen a centipede before and I have Satan’s Hollow, not only that other Midway games too and other games that I’m skilled at so I wouldn’t be powerless and I’m just powered 🆙 at them and good times I have with my life.👍
Featured in the movie Joysticks.
I only got to play this game 3 times in my whole life. Wow.
how'd you lose even one life, using that shield hack? Shield never went below 14.
This game was so hard that I never even saw the blue or black birds.
(EDIT:) Aaand I somehow never noticed you could get more than one cannon firing. O___O
Huzzah,, we used to have this game st the tattoo studio I worked at in Radcliff Kentucky called Queen of Hearts. Spent a lot of time playing it. 😊
Whaat a weird, weird game. Rocketship that shoots down pterodactyls throwing bombs, and demons to build bridges? Btw what are the demons building? A tower? And ride of the valkyries? :D
Well you know where Galaga got there idea for a game🤔
Never heard of this game until today. Just heard in an interview with Kirk Hammett that Metallica were obsessed with this game in the 80s
I remember playing this at a hotel nonstop for 2 days in Truckee, CA in the late 80's when my uncle was out there running a race. It kind of freaked me out how the Devil kept morphing.
Like Phoenix, but more brutal.
Lo jugaba de chico con mi hermano Cris en la Commodore 64 en los '80. Años después descubrí que la música es de Wagner (también la usa, por ejemplo, Francis Ford Coppola en "Apocalipsis now").
This game is similar to Diablo for the PlayStation in that there is no reference to if the Devil Satan the Prince of Darkness is overcome and killed that the character in the game goes to heaven. But I do remember this game from a few years ago. I did not play it that much. It was on a disk for the PlayStation when I discovered it. Of course it would be with a few other games. That is interesting that they would play a classical song named Flight of the Valkyries in this game even though they do not play the song from beginning to end.
Diablo and this game are not related
Very impressive high score!! How did you get so many lives?
cheat codes in an emulator
I want Perfection as I had as a kid😊
Nothing says Myrtle Beach like Satan's Hollow Hogan's alleys or Mach 2
I remember going to the store to play this...quarter on the screen (I'm next)
+RanGer498 Quarters on the screen....yup. It was pretty funny, with popular games, there may have been five or six quarters lined up.
This was one of my favorite games. The console itself was well-designed in an eye-catching fiery red and black motif with giant devils on the side and a prominent, very unique looking controller that lit up. It really stood out in the arcade and I felt almost bad for enjoying a game decorated like that so much.
what's funny is that for years I was looking for this game and my friends did not remember it. when I showed them this video they where like "oh yeah that game was great"...lol thxs again.
If you want to play it again, there is a compilation disc for PS3 and Xbox 360 called Midway Arcade Origins. It costs $15 to $20 new on Amazon, and it has 31 Midway classics, including this one.
@@Apprentice_of_the_Leonine Ya, I just got this on Xbox 360 a few months back....surprisingly I don't remember this as a kid (I was 6 in 1982, so i'm sure I walked by it many times in arcades), but it's an excellent old school arcade shooter I really enjoy now
Super hard game
Most were
Satan didn't loose any time to get to video games
Only REAL way to play this is with a giant joy stick.
Dorfus Maneuver!
hmm - some similarities to Galaga, I am just noticing... I spent a lot of quarters on this in my youth...
I really don't understand all the fuss. In the Bible they could have just used a missile to shoot Satan.
With no future attachments of need
How you guys get all these retro games. I am looking to get this satan hollow, defender vanguard. Anybody who knows how, send me a link
Mame emulator
I love this game and yes i'm a kid and I love this game even though I suck at it why don't we have arcades with classics near were I live the closes is galiga at peter piper pizza
I own a full size cabinet and the cocktail version
Fun Fact: Metallica's favorite game during Kill Em All.
On the one hand, the gameplay has always been epic.
On the other? I'm glad that I had R-Type to play, instead of this. :p
Completely different era tho.
Typical 1980's unforgiving game play only 3 lives set up for a very hard sessins at the table or you are fucked my friend.
me gusto mucho el juego
They should make a mobile version of this game
Plenty of microtransactions
Calais Castle is why Satan (TEITAN) chose...... now i m curious.... Satan loves that castle in Calais France.....Dover to Calais
Metallica’s favorite game while recording Kill Em All
That was Metallicas Favorite Game in the 80s!
This game really pissed me off!
It was supposed to
You are playing a modded version, it fires way too fast. I can tell because my best bro Epyx911 and I used to have head-to-head battles (that he almost always won) on this game. Re-do it on original speed hardware or emulation and then I will be impressed. Otherwise this is not that impressive. - edit - oh MAN I didn't even see the huge amount of lives. Yeah, done watching.
Touhou ain’t got nothin’ on this!
use your shields!!!!!
Yes indeed -- and in addition to using the shield, on the easy rounds that have only eight enemies, it's important to try to eliminate the enemies ONE AT A TIME in order to build the bridge more quickly across the gorge into the land of Satan, i.e. once you destroy a single enemy, pick up the bridge piece and add it to the bridge BEFORE going after another enemy.
Satan shows up Rar RAR RAAAARRRRR pop. dragon with a flag woo woo woo woo woo
Was hoping to learn some real tips instead of some hack to give unlimited shields. How boring.
And without a change your costume wear mask or disability and the same as everyone else without calling me despicable
Joysticks
Metallica!
