A keystone in James Cagney's rise to stardom, Taxi stars the gritty actor as a hardened New York City cab driver. As a corporate interest attempts to eliminate all independent cabbies in the city, Cagney recruits a gang to stand up to them - violently. Directed by Roy Del Ruth, several of the gunfight sequences in the film used live machine-gun bullets. Taxi is also the first film in which Cagney danced and where he spoke his famous line, "You dirty rat!"

By the early 30s, Jimmy Cagney was ahead of his time with that great energy, and his natural skills for acting. Most of the movie actors of the era came from the theaters, and their performances were kind of static, with little brilliance.
He's the best of all-time.
Not all actors in the 20s were intelligent enough to be able to make the transition to talkies and so many of their careers died because of that. Mary Philbin was just such an example.
He's like the best more modern actors in his acting already early 30s.
Most of the movie actors of the era didn’t come from the theaters and their acting was NOT static. It was full of life and energy

Oh how I adored James Cagney. Never ever will there be another. I like to think that he, and all the other greats have a Playhouse in heaven, with Shakespeare as the boss :) .

One of my all time favorite movies and one I recommend seeing is the 1939 Film “The Roaring Twenties”. Cagney and Bogart star together in this Classic and is IMO one of the all time Great Old Gangster Movies.
Cagney shoots Bogart who played nasty punks at the time. Didn't Cagney get to kill him again in "Angels With Dirty Faces?"

Compare Cagney to many early 30's actors and it's no comparison. Many of this era were stagey and stiff. Cagney was dynamic and despite being called a "tough guy", he was rather flamboyant.

I've heard "you dirty rat" my whole life but never saw this scene or even saw what Jimmy Cagney looked like. I pictured him as an older, fatter guy saying "you dirty rat" but it's actully a younger skinnier guy saying "you dirty YELLOW BELLIED rat". Weird.

I don't understand this scene. After she tells him the gun is under the mattress, why does he run over to the other cop allowing Cagney to shoot at the door? I can't make sense of this.

He doesn't. He goes to grab Cagney, who throws him across to the other cop (albeit, not very convincingly), allowing him enough time to shoot the door.
