Cottage Pie, Shepherd's Pie cousin

- Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb. I used beef so this is a Cottage Pie. Whatever you call it, it is delicious. Full of beef, vegetables, and a thickened broth, with creamy whipped potatoes on top, you can't go wrong with this dish. All you need is maybe a side salad and bread. I hope you will give this a try and if you do, please let me know.
Enjoy!

2 Tbsp brown gravy mix
1 tsp roasted beef base
1 tsp roasted garlic base
3/4 cup beef broth
1/2 - 1 cup mixed vegetables,
salt & pepper to taste

Brown ground beef, onion, and garlic in skillet. Drain grease if needed. Add brown gravy mix, beef base, garlic base. Stir well. Add broth and vegetables and salt and pepper to taste. Let simmer 5-10 minutes. In the meantime, make your favorite mashed potato recipe. Spread mashed potatoes on bottom of casserole dish. Spoon beef mixture over potatoes. Finish by covering beef mixture with remaining mashed potatoes. Brown in a 400 degree oven 15-20 minutes.
Enjoy!
As a Brit living in the US this is like a taste of home. One of my favorite dishes! I make it pretty much the same but add a dash of Worcestershire sauce and definitely grated cheese on the top. Ive never seen potato on the bottom though.
I use beef stew meat and brown gravy mixes. I also use the same veggies you did. Mashed potatoes on top and add a small amount of shredded cheese on top.
I grew up in an Irish Catholic family & we ate A LOT of potatoes, which I love! I usually put peas, onions, carrots & a root vegetable like rutabaga. I’ve never made it with ground lamb. I did visit Ireland in 2013 & had traditional Shepherd’s pie in Dublin. Oh lord was it good! But back at home I just make cottage pie. I love your recipe Karen! Now I’m hungry 😂 😋
We always sprinkle cheese on top of the potatoes to melt down into the potatoes. Also sometimes we mix up the mashed potatoes with sour cream. This dish is a staple in our house.
Yumm. I like to use sour cream in mashed potatoes. 😋
Well done Karen! My sister used to make this all the time. She made it the same way with beef, not lamb and still referred to it as “ Shepards Pie “. I have never made it before as strange as that may be!! Yours came out beautiful ❤️Just the perfect amount of gravy, not runny🥰
Thank you sweet friend. It has all you need in t. Ad maybe a salad and dinner is served 😋
Karen, I never miss every one of your cooking videos you post!
You are a fantastic teacher. Learning alot. Thank you. Joan from NY. 😊
Thank you my friend. That means a lot to me. ❤️
Nice to hear about your Irish heritage
Love the idea of potatoes on the bottom and the top 🐯❤️ Thank you! 💞
My mom used to make this and it would have ground beef on the bottom, then layer creamed corn, peas, and mashed potatoes with grated cheddar on top. such homey comfort food !
Yumm ❤️
If I don't have stock on hand, I also use "Better than Bouillon." Regular bouillon--although made from dehydrated stock--contains a certain spice that comes across as packaged or chemical to me. Your dish looks great. Also: You remind me of my late mom. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Karen, your dish looks awesome. Thanks for posting
Cottage pie is good, I love it 👍
Good morning, your shepherd pie looks absolutely delicious and I am going to make .Hope you have a blessed day.
That looks tasty. 😋😋
Yes I am going to try it.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers!!! 😊❤
I made this for dinner tonite exactly like the way you made it. It was delicious. Thanks for a great recipie.
Hi Karen looks delicious I love it 😀 your hubby so sweet 😋 he says good Job !! 👍
Perfect timing. Yummy cottage 🥧 pie.
Hi Karen. Looks delicious. Will make this soon.
Everything you make looks so good.
Hi Karen, a suggestion is to put the pie under the broiler for a few minutes to make the top golden. Maybe throw a bit of cheddar cheese on top first. Blessings.
This looks yummy 😋
As soon as I turned your video on I was starving so I turned you off and ate a bowl of frosted mini wheats. I’m all good now but this looks scrumptious. Love shepherds pie and all I use is ground beef . Another winner here Karen. I actually like mine made like a roast with carrots and onions and I use a roast. Make the gravy thick and put those buttery mashed potatoes on top. Yum…Much love and big hugs. ❤Have you ever ate hamburger gravy? Make it just like sausage gravy. Great on biscuits with breakfast or served on mashed or baked potatoes. Love gravy on baked potatoes.
I just love gravy. ❤️
@@KarenJonesFoodFamily Me too. Any gravy on a hot biscuit or a tater. ❤️❤️
😋😋😋
Bobbi, you are way too funny!!!🤣🤣❤❤

Looks and sounds so delish Ms Karen and I know Pop’s Jones is enjoying it 😊
I so enjoy u2 and how he respects and enjoys and adores you and loves your food. Awe 🌸
This looks really good. I’m gonna try this recipe
Amazing!
I add extra meat to spaghetti sauce! That freezes well, and you can use up those random mushrooms, too. Now I am going to have to go on a search for the garlic from Better than Bullion. I do love their products. So good!
Looks so good
I add a tomato base as well in the gravy and grated cheese on top which goes golden and melted. Love this dish 💜
We put cheese on top of the beef mixture when we make ours, but I’ve never put potatoes on the bottom so I’m gonna try that next time. Thanks Mrs. Jones
Looks very tasty! Maybe a little shredded cheddar on top. So happy to have found your channel recently, Karen. Feel like neighbors. Greetings from Southern Indiana.
Cheese would be awesome ❤️
Hi Karen I just discovered your channel. I live in Alabama also. Just moved here from New Orleans, Louisiana. I wanted to be close to my daughter here in Huntsville. You are only 2 hrs., away. I absolutely love your recipes

I have had my Rada Knifes for years, they are so easy to sharpen. Love mine!
I had some of this left over from another time so I thawed it out and ate it for lunch today, it was delicious. I had made it about a month ago.

Thank you ❤️
Well sweetie…as usual another awesome video!! ❤❤😘😘
Thank you my sweet friend. It's so easy to make and delicious. Nothing else needed to go with it really. ♥️
I just made Shepard 's pie last week. We use 2lbs. Ground beef, 1 yellow onion, garlic
powder, salt, Italian seasoning. Then we let the burger cook and then drain the grease. Then we put a large bag of frozen mixed veggies and 3 large jars of Heinz brown gravy. We make some garlic mashed potatoes and put on top. We put some Sharp cheddar cheese on top of potatoes. Hope you enjoy!
I was told traditional shepherds pie was made on a Monday, using leftover roast lamb, potatoes and vegetables from Sunday roast. They would mince the lamb up mix it with the leftover veggies, and use the leftover potatoes, usually roast, for the topping.
I always make cottage pie, since most of my family don’t like lamb ( my son and myself ). I’ll give your recipe a go.
My filling consists of onions, carrots and some rutabaga ( called swede in England ). Add beef bouillon, ketchup and something called HP sauce, which tastes a bit like A1 steak sauce. I know people that add, peas as well, I just think it’s a family preference.
Forgot to add, I sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top, soooo good!
Sounds delicious 😋
My mother would cook a beef roast on Sunday. The left over beef would be put through a meat grinder and she then made shepherds pie for dinner another night. I still love it today. 🇨🇦
yep, you have made a perfect Cittage Pie
Hi Karen, I love your show, everything you cook looks delicious. I see you use gravy mix often and I would love to try it. Will you please tell me the brand you buy. Thanks love Patty
Thank you. I use Pioneer or McCormick.
I add peas and carrots and make mashed potatoes & put it all together, yummy!
I added, peas, carrots, corn, and green beans. Yumm ❤️
Hey Karen, your version looks fab!!! I make a preserve called chili sauce, and I always add some to my gravy base...I am not sure if you buy a version of chili sauce in the states, but its a sweet, spiced flavourful sauce that you can add to literally anything..
Sounds good. We have chili sauce but it is like a little spicy ketchupy sauce. Yumm ❤️
I make mine with a can of cream of mushroom that is the only difference.
This is always good, great way to use up mashed potatoes.
Absolutely and veggies also, and so easy to put together. ❤️
I cannot even think of eating a Baby Lamb! Like your recipe instead!
Me too! 😉❤️
Add mushroom powder in most meat fishers it adds more flavor karen.
My granddaughter makes it with impossible meat and it is delicious… I call it Shepherd’s pie anyway
I put every veggie that I can in it
My husband and I have been married 55 yrs. We got a better homes and garden cook book for a gift. I've made the Hamburger pie for over 50 years. I use 80/20 ground beef, chopped onions, green beans, whole kernel corn and a can of condensed tomato soup. I top with mashed potatoes. I bake 350 degrees for 30 min. My family enjoy it.
I wonder this every time i see pop jones. What does he do for a living?
He is in automotive (18-wheeler) body shop management.
Oh and shrooms ,sauteed
I seen kitty. On the chair Precious
I love all the videos I don’t eat meat. But I do all vegetables.
Use the plant based. Would be delicious 😋
I love Cottage Pie, on those days when the World has rejected you and life is full of Woe...LOL!! Okay a wee bit dramatic there, nothing like fixing yourself a comforting dish of Cottage Pie. There is a philsophy amoung Farmers and Shepards, like Mussels, you never ate Lamb if it didn't have an R in the month. So, this meant the Summer months you didn't buy lamb, this idea would have come from a time, when access to refrigeration wasn't around, so you ate Lamb in the cooler months. As a kid I know technically Spring comes in March, but in around February the sheep would give birth to the lambs, and it ushered in the time of the Goddess, Brigid, the daffodils/snowdrops would peek up and the long dark days of Winter where drawing to an end in the Northern Hemisphere.
You said that so eloquently. Loved it. Thank you. ❤️
oh dear me !! Shepherds Pie origin is -pieces of Roast Lamb minced with your mincer, mixed with Tomato Sauce, then pressed into pie dish, and topped with mash Potato and browned in oven, this texture and taste is delicious, no way anything like Cottage Pie that has vegies from Cottage Garden,, but boiled vegies are served with s Shepherds Pie,, these two pies are completely different,, - yes you can use roast beef, but you will not get the tender flavour that Lamb is.
That's why I named it "Cottage Pie" and I explained that in the video. I used ground beef and not roast beef. The difference. Thanks for the information. ❤️
I am too squeamish to eat lamb. Much prefer this version
Me too ❤️
You like it salty Karen, added salt, salty bullion, full sodium beef both, 2 Tbls. of salty gravy mix…….whoooo weeee….My blood pressure went up 3 notches just watching.
You don't have to add salt, use sodium free broth, leave out gravy mix, but it won't be as good as mine. I don't use as much salt as you think I do. Your blood pressure went up thinking about what to say to me.
I thought hubby mite have been Welsh.
Irish and Scottish ❤️
@@KarenJonesFoodFamily Hi Karen, Jones originated in Wales there is still a high population with this surname, also there is more sheep than people here. Beautiful Welsh lamb, it's the best x
@@pamh3990 we both have Irish and Scottish backgrounds.
