#onepiece #eastblue #luffy
Reading One Piece manga for the very first time! One Piece by Eiichiro Oda is one of the most popular manga and anime series of all time and I am so excited to finally be reading One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. In this video I go over my wrong expectation of One Piece as a first time reader. I will be discussing all of the East Blue Saga and the arcs it contains with full spoilers. I hope you enjoy my One Piece East Blue Saga reactions and will join me as I follow Luffy and crew onto the Grand Line!
In this video going over the East Blue Saga I will be talking about the following characters:
Monkey D. Luffy
Sanji
Roronoa Zoro
Captain Kuro
Usopp
Nami
Buggy
Dragon
Captain Smokes
Love the title. I hope you enjoy the journey!
Thank you so much!!!
Really appreciate you checking this out!
@@DudesTalkingManga cant wait untill youre up to date like the rest of us watching grand line review chapter summaries like gospel
@@DudesTalkingManga It's always a pleasure watching people get into the series for the first time! :D
one more in the one piece boat ;D get along and enjoy the journey
So happy to hear your thoughts Jimmy! I can’t wait to watch your journey through the series! And use me as your Google!!! Google is *not* your friend!
I will absolutely be relying on you for all kinds of info hahaha, thanks so much for watching and supporting!
@@DudesTalkingManga To Merphy's point as well, I would just avoid youtube in general. The algorithm is not your friend! Many One Piece videos will have outright spoilers displayed as the cover image; not to mention people who put them right in the title of their videos. Would definitely suggest a youtube sabbatical or making an fresh, alternate youtube account to avoid One Piece recommendations.
Don't miss cover story.. it is canon.. u will see small glimpse into rest of world. Which will pay back later
Merphy has an alert set on youtube for every new one piece fan .... So she can relive their discovery of one piece through them hhhh
@@moussadotco I'd be lying if I say that am not doing the same
New fans getting into one piece has to be my favorite kind of video on UA-cam. It’s so cool seeing people’s early thoughts as a new fan, seeing what theories they have early on, correct or incorrect, and that early passion one piece inspires. I always get a new perspective on one of my favorite series because of it. Hope you have a great adventure, and enjoy the grand line!
I literally commented something very similar!
It's been 20+ years since I first read these chapters
So it's one of my favorite types of videos to watch
I actually started with the english fansubbed anime in 1999/2000. Manga wasn't that big in Germany yet. Lucky me, I was at the University at that time and we had a decently sized anime community, that got their stuff innitially from IRC/mIRC and later from dedicated anime sites.
@@neosildrake That's really really cool. I bought the first volume of the eng shonen jump at a blockbuster in 2000, and that was my intro to one piece. I didn't get into reading it every week until about 2008
Yeah
It's just nice
We got another one. All i can say is if you enjoyed this arc, it just gets better from here. Watch out for Pandaman he is Oda's version of waldo that's in the story. 🐼💜
One Of Us. 🎉😅
doesnt just get better...remember, thriller bark exists.
@@Goblin1986p nah dude thriller bark isn’t bad. There is no bad one piece arc, only not as good. It has Zoro’s finest moment and a few other good things.
Even if that were true the story still gets better as it goes but hey if that’s your opinion all good 👍
Pandaman is canon how dare you :P
@@Goblin1986p Have you read the manga? The anime drags it out.
Thriller Bark is mostly a cartoony, scooby doo-esque, Halloween themed comedy arc that's actually funny. It has Brook's backstory, everything involving Kuma and a lot of foreshadowing.
You're all in already? Thats a good thing. East Blue is actually just a tutorial zone. It's just the prologue of the series. The warm-up. If you're all in after just that then you're not ready for the epicness that comes later. You cant even imagine what else this story is capable of.
I can't wati to read more!
nah but get ready to cry like three times an arc
@@DudesTalkingManga Pro loguetown ;)
was just about to say this lol
If he's having this much fun on east blue??? He's not even in the Grand Line yet
yeah, there's no stopping from here on out, he's definitely hooked 100%
This was a video I didn't expect, but I am glad it's here. I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the story. Have fun reading!
Thank you so much!
@@DudesTalkingManga by the way the stairs plott with kushina is the hole plott because fall from stairs is a symbol in japan for Suicide .
You should also read the cover stories (the stories in 1st page of each chapter). They tell stories of side characters after Luffy meets them in their arc.The first one tells how Buggy actually got to Loguetown from chapter 35 to 75.The cover stories are not just entertaining on their own,but makes the whole world feel more alive.
Will do!
@@DudesTalkingManga Please read the SBS corners as well, where Oda answers questions made by fans, which often times are just silly, but sometimes hint on stuff that makes theorycrafting so much more fun during your journey and some that will help you understand reoccuring jokes and background characters you might otherwise miss!
@@HonerkampAgreed! They also sometimes reveal canon details that are either downright hilarious, or somewhat eye-opening and add further depth to many characters.
@@Honerkamphorny mostly
@@royalfun1031 Gotta know how many Gomu Gomu's Luffy can stretch afterall
One of the coolest things about reading a series like OP that's gone on for so long is that you'll get to see not only the character's growth but also Oda's growth as both a writer & an artist. Oda first started dreaming up OP when he was like 12 years old, it's his life's work and he first started it officially at like 22-23.
I think knowing that really enhances the experience, atleast it did for me.
Definitely!
I love knowing what happens and watching you discover this. It's really refreshing to see someone new to the story break it down. So cool!
I appreciate that you've taken notice of and highlighted the fact that characters in the One Piece series can have a lot of staying power. One of the many things fans tend to love about the series is how invested it gets you into characters that you may have initially assumed to be throwaway.
The continuity of character presence does significantly add to the believability of an otherwise increasingly absurd world. And what's more is that Oda is a master at recontextualizing characters and events. Just when you think you have someone figured out, you might see a totally new side of them (in just about the best way possible).
In short, you can you can look forward to some of your favourite side characters making recurring experiences. Especially for characters you'll meet from this point forward.
Im so glad you noticed the significance of the pinwheel there at the end! Alot of people have zone out and glaze right by that. Tbh I don't know the proper words for describing the emotions felt in that moment when it all clicks into place. Truly there has never been a more fitting instance for the expression "chef's kiss"
Its so great to see the community grow! Its so great how one storry can make so many people happy!
Sometimes I love the algorithm because it brings channels like this to my feed, I love the insights even from East Blue, (and in truth anyone who wants to get into One Piece I always recommend to read the whole saga and see how you feel about the story from there, because you're either hooked or it might not be for you) and some of the questions you had, and I can't wait for you to find some of the answers, and what other questions are going to come up.
I can't wait for more theories, and getting a laugh from some and the realization of others that you may be correct about in the future, but as a reader since the early 2000's reading it weekly pretty much the whole time, is sometimes you're going to have to look back at the older chapters to piece things together some of the points, also from someone who doesn't get misty eyed at much, keep something near by because there may be times you'll need it. ;)
Also no spoilers but I will say the series shifts to amore serious tone in some of the arcs especially as the story goes on which personally I can't wait to see the reaction to.
Thank you so much!
great video, loved seeing your experiences with and enjoyment of one of the greatest stories ever told, looking forward to seeing your reaction to more. also I know it can be hard to get the pronunciations down when you are manga only and being constantly corrected can get annoying so normally I wouldnt mention them but because if you do more you are gonna be saying his name a lot I feel like it will save you a lot of future comments to clarify that usopp is pronounced more like oo-sopp. Anyway can't wait for the next video :)
14:06 logue like log. as in epilogue and prologue. it's "The town of the beginning and the end." where roger was born and died. the epilogue to the east blue saga and the physical end of the east blue. it's the prologue to the grandline and the beginning of the real adventure.
I cannot stress just how quickly Luffy became my favorite manga/anime protagonist due to just how headstrong he is without the typical Shonen caveats. I hope everyone in the comments here is being nice and avoiding spoilers cuz I’m excited to hear another update on your stance in the story down the line
Im hyped!
Oda has a similar style of writing as George rr..he is always planting seeds even with the most insignificant characters, and you see the results hundreds of chapters later and it's so satisfying
I do love me some GRRM
if he´d just taken his stance on death, hence keeping dead characters dead. It´s really the only weak point of one piece
I agree but I wish George had half the work ethic that Oda does lol
@@Mezchano a fraction would do xD
I love videos like this. Where you see someone who is incredibly hesitant at taking on the monumental task of diving into the best story over told because it's so long, or it's meme'd about, or other people put you off it because of their own biases. And the tentativeness just disappears because this story and these characters are, pardon my french, lit as fuck, and suddenly they're a fan for life.
Always good to see new fans welcome to the crew brother🤝
Better late than never, Jimmy. If anything, I'd say you're going to love it. There's no better time to catch up on One Piece as it steps into the grand final saga of a 25-year storytelling journey.

I'm still finding time to get into 20th Century Boys again. how are you doing with that series?
Good! Gonna read volume 2 soon and do a video here with Andrew on it!
Since youre reading the manga, dont forget to pay attention to the cover pages! Sometimes Oda like to tell stories about side characters that dont necessarily relate to the main story at hand through these pages, they might be important in the future!
You enjoying East Blue this much is a good sign. If you stick with it for a few more arcs I’d dare anyone not to be in love with it by a certain point.
I am so excited to see you continue with the story. One Piece is my favorite of all time and seeing someone new discover it and love alot of the same things I do is awesome. Welcome to the party!
The "Kuina fell down the stairs" sparked a lot of theories that vary in how wacky they get (although maybe still possible. As you'll see crazy stuff happens)
But I always felt like it's an euphemism so her dad don't show up and tell young Zoro she deleted herself
😔
@@DudesTalkingManga it is a Japanese euphemism for suicide. Because Japan has such a bad suicide rate they just say this instead so it’s less of a bummer
Honestly, I think she actually did just fall down the stairs. It's meant to show how random life can be at times - how when someone decides to change themselves, the next day could be their last. It's what drove Zoro to do all that he could every day and that's what it was meant to do, I think. Show that life is fragile, that it can be taken away at a moment by just an unlucky mistep. I also think it gives Zoro guilt because the only reason she needed to sharpen her sword was because of his duel with her, and that was why she was in the warehouse at that moment when she fell - to get something to sharpen Wado with.
@@7thlittleleopard7 I’m not reading all dat but W theory
@@hbsavage0387 I've actually asked several of my Japanese friends and they've never heard of it.
Humans are very fragile and can easily die like that slipping in the kitchen hitting their head
The insights on the Dragon character as a plot device this early on is pretty smart storytelling wise that I never thought about before
As an avid fan of the One Piece series, I'm glad that another person has decided to take the plunge into the world of OP.
My favorite feeling is watching people slowly become fans and get hyped and excited for the next arc.
The ocean that is one piece is vast. May fair theories guide your sails and enjoy the adventure. Looking forward to more.
I love seeing new people get into the series. Getting to see you guys theorize what comes next is a fun little moment of nostalgia where we didn't know what was coming ourselves. Don't let anyone take that from you.
Prepare for tears of joy, tears of sadness and the unexpected at every turn! This series is a gem.
I started reading One Piece 20 years ago give or take a few months.
Arlong Park was also where I fell in love with this series.
Glad to see people picking up this series now, as there has never been a better time to pick it up as we are entering the final saga.
PS: It is indeed Logue town. As its the town of the Beginning (Prologue) and the End (Epilogue)
Just to clarify about Roguetown It is supposed to be LogueTown, because of how it represents Luffy and Roger's Stories. Being Roger's Execution, his Epilogue, and Luffys last stop before the Grand Line, His Prologue.
This is the first video i watch from you. I LOVE watching people's reactions and thoughts as they go through one piece so i'll be along for the ride and i'll get to know you more! I hope you have a good journey in this amazing world that is one piece
This is great content! Love to see new fans experience the story from the beginning.
Probably already mentioned, but don't miss out on the cover stories before each chapter. They are each single panel of a larger story when put together and deal with other characters outside the crew. For example during a portion of East Blue a Buggy cover story goes over what happened to him after fighting Luffy and how he met Alvida etc. Which then comes back in Loguetown.
One piece is a carefully written and a beautiful story ❤
I LOVE this video and the way you spoke on the topic - you have a very likable personality.
I was reading the one piece manga up til 2013 and I have not touched it since. I went back to the start a week ago and when I finished the east blue saga this video got recommended to me. Nami's story made me cry on several occasions and made me remember why I loved the story so much when I was younger. I look forward to watching your next videos.
I recently read OP and many of your theories are interesting to me. Some are answered and some are not. You're in for a treat.
So envious of you, to be able to explore this fantastic world of OP for the first time. It's been 20 years since I was as far in the story. And I've read every chapter and every book as they came out ever since. I never got tired of it. But would give anything to explore it anew.
This video made me happy its always fun to see people who actually give one piece a break and watch it. It just take me back to when I started watching it very fulfilling.
Glad you like it and looking forward to your thoughts
So fun! I’m excited to see your journey across One Piece!
The fact that you drew parallel between Usopp and Krillin is amazing because the english dub voice actor Sonny Strait actually voices both Krillin & Usopp!
ok im in with the reviews, always fun to see new readers discovering this amazing world
honestly at this point folks watching/reading one piece for the first time after all this time with 0 knowledge of whats gonna happen is one of my favorite internet posts at this point. Its just fun to watch people react and get that nostalgia feeling of remembering what it was like back when I started the series so so long ago.
2016 2 episodes in and it became the best thing I watched. 2023 it is still the best thing I’ve watched and read. A PURE MASTERPIECE
I think I speak on behalf of the entire OP fandom.
We love seeing people experience this for the first time.
To give you a non-spoiler.
All your thoughts are valid and all of your theories will end up better than imagined.
This rekindles our love for what shapes up to be the biggest and most wonderful story ever written.
This will be seen the same way lotr is in the future.
I know it can't be said enough but I am super glad you picked it up and gave it a go. It really does get so much better the longer you stay in so if you love East Blue you are in for a real treat in fiction that is up there in levels and unlike any shonen I have ever experienced. It's just so amazing to see how real this world breathes. It gives me hope my boyfriend will like it when he picks it up because he really loves Berserk and dark fantasies too.
13:22 That’s what all of us LOVE. We are only following one story view in a WHOLE WORLD going on in the background
I like how everyone who has started reading/watching One Piece has fell in love with it
Ye that’s how it always goes, nobody ever believes us when we say this is what happens all the time
OP is a goofy story about the horrors of the world, seen through the eyes of pirates. It's so light hearted, yet SO dark at the same time. It's amazing!
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts going forward, it’s nice to hear perspective from someone new to the series
I'm so excited for you man! I would pay anything to read and watch it for the first time again
Hearing a guy who’s read 1 volume talk about wanting to see things I’ve waited 25 years to see and still haven’t, is absolutely surreal.
Makes me chuckle
I love so much seeing people just getting into my favorite manga, and potentially my favorite piece of literature of all time. It takes me back to when I first got into One Piece and had all these crazy theories in my head. I hope you enjoy your journey into the world of pirates that is One Piece.
Welcome to the crew nakama! You are in for a heck of a ride!
You have not the remotest idea of the dimension that the story, world and, ultimately, the lore of One Piece will reach. How envious to see you discover it now for the first time as many of us have been doing for 2 decades. I really liked your comment on the east blue saga. Enjoy the long and wonderful road that lies ahead of you.
Always satisfying to discover another UA-camr admitting he’s wrong about one piece. Everything from the raw reactions to be understandable mispronunciations of character and place names is what i crave. I recommend picking and choosing episodes of the anime depicting scenes or fights that stand out like the Arlong Park walk and Mihawk fight.
Got to say I can’t wait to hear what you think when you see what’s coming. One piece is amazing and just from the way you speak, it is going to be fun to see your reactions. I’ll be here for it.
"Everything about Sanji is complicated"
You have no idea how on point you are.
The first minute of this is sooooo recognisable in almost anybody I've ever introduced to One Piece. Initial hesitation and then it blows them out of the water.
Welcome to the journey! Enjoy the ride it is an amazing work of art yet to be completed.
I love hearing about people getting into One Piece, recently got my friends (back) into it.
The series means a lot of different things for everyone, but I think overall the strongest things about it are the good morals it pushes, or that it gives you a lot of hope inside. The backstories of the characters don't feel overly contrived for the era or type of land (?) they live in. But I've always imagined people have a very kid like or happy go lucky vision of what One Piece is like, but the reality is very different.
I just convinced my wife of ten years to watch One Piece with me after finishing Hunter x Hunter and she thought fell in love with it during Sanjis arc. Then we started Arlong Park and I had to explain why I didn't force her to watch the show when we first met.
I hope you keep making these videos until your caught up. Its always interesting to see what other people get out of this absolute masterpiece.
Awesome! We have a few more here on the channel you can check out, plan on documenting the entire journey as we go 😎
The cool thing about it without Spoilers is that they don't ALWAYS win !!!
Which is amazing when it comes to story telling for me!
Welcome aboard! Your life is about to change lol. Can’t wait to watch your journey & thoughts
14:09 It’s actually Loguetown. It’s only called Roguetown in some of the English translations. Loguetown actually fits better for it anyway.
The “Logue” part comes from the words prologue & epilogue, which both fit for Loguetown. Loguetown is the epilogue of the East Blue saga, which is considered the prologue of One Piece, so Loguetown is the epilogue of the prologue.
Been reading One Piece for almost 17 years now, and I only wish I could wipe my mind so I could experience it again fresh like you are now.
Welcome on board!
Thank ya!
Its so awesome listening to this man, i love when new people join the journey of one piece, theres so many moments i cant wait to hear about how you take with all the twists and turns but all im gonna say is you are going to have the time of your life based on how you enjoy things snd knowing what is in store! I subscribed to ya and totally here to watch your journey as you get to the story we are at now. Brace yourself man, you are in for the story of a lifetime
7:35 I'm trying to remember if it's mentioned during that conversation, but one of those Highest tier swords, is Yoru, the massive black sword Mihawk nearly disembowelled Zoro with in Baratie.
14:06 It is supposed to be Loguetown as in Prol-ogue and Epi-logue. It is the town where Luffy first goes into the grand line at the end of the story's prologue, as well as the place Gold Rodger's life came to an end.
Love the King Bobby Baratheon drip in the background.
You are in for a great Adventure, I am kind of jealous that I cannot start from the beginning blindly 😂 but I will follow your journey! I subscribed just because you love One Piece, welcome to our crew, you are now and official Nakama!
Buckle up my guy. Your in for the journey of all journeys. Onepiece is truly a modern day epic
Maaan im 30yo this year , and been following onepiece and other series since middle school , back then sooooo many people making fun of me for watching and reading onepiece or anime or manga in general , because they thought it was sooo childish , but now that same people also starting reading or watching onepiece and other series , i just feel happy with so many people come to enjoy this media
what a nice review! First time watching your channel , looking foward for your next videos about one piece !
😭😭 another one piece reader! Welcome good Sir! You have lots of things to look forward to. May you enjoy your voyage as we did ours.
We will wait for you on the shores of Wano!!
Ohk im on this journey with ya... Can't wait to see your reactions on upcoming arc 💙
I'm also more into dark fantasy, Berserk being my all time favourite but last year I binged ALL 1080 chapters of OP and now I am very invested. I'm still looking for a cool youtube channel to watch while waiting for new chapters so I hope you catch up soon :)
Holy shit welcome to the ride! Can't wait to hear your thoughts
Every single One Piece fan wishes to be where you are once more. A bit of unsolicited advice, savor the story, pacing between chapters and story arcs does wonders to the beauty of the story.
The worst part of one piece is when you’re part way through catching up and your mind is racing with ideas and theories then you realise you’re about to run out of chapters to read or episodes to watch even tho you still have so many questions. Then you’re stuck waiting week by week and it’s honestly torture.
It's the Logue Town, because it's a wordplay on prologue and epilogue. It's a city of the ends and beginnings
One Piece is like Digging a Hole, Early on you will find if its for you, if not then you can climb out but if it is, you'll continue digging to a point you'll never be able to get out
:D :D have fun waiting for more info about shanks :D
I cannot wait to see your reactions to all of the payoffs down the line. It is truly a high to never be recreated
ah yes the stairs, good old one piece haha, loved the vid :)
Welcome aboard, sir! It’s gonna be a crazy adventure 😁🏴☠️🌊🎻⚔️
One Piece is such a special series. I’m glad you are enjoying the ride so far.
We got another one, boyos! Now I can look forward to even more excellent One Piece videos gushing about my favorite series. :)
As a current manga reader I love seeing what thoughts come to your mind now as compared to what’s happening to the manga right now. Everything Oda was trying to tell you is very evidently picked up . 13:18 is a perfect example
10:15 "He is the guy who cried wolf" I don't know whether this has been pointed out elsewhere in the comments, but Oda really couldn't have made that clearer as Usopp was introduced. He has Pinocchio's long nose, and his name is an amalgam of the Japanese word "uso", meaning "lie", and Aesop, the name of the dude who wrote down the story of the boy who cried wolf for the posterity to see.
Have a blast of a journey as you catch up to speed
Finally someone who aprecciates Syrup Village. I think it is highly underrated. 😁
I just started reading One Piece this week and I'm currently on volume 4. I think the series is good but not great, at least not yet. I hope I can grow to love it by the end of this arc (:
No piece of media should ever get judged before the first episode/chapter, cool to hear you liked it more than you expected.
Fun fact: the Loguetown/Roguetown debate is because there’s no “L” sound in Japanese, and they use “Ru/Ro” to replace “L’s”. It’s basically up to the translator to decide if it’s L or R. (Yes, Luffy is technically Ruffy)
Looking forward to your upcoming revelations. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber
Loved every second of this video, excited to see you review future volumes!
"I was wrong about One Piece" is one of the most classic phrases in the history of manga/anime world, and in OP this box contains "sorry i don't know how pronounce X character name" " Water 7/Enies Lobby is the best" "Sky arc es the worst" and many more
oooh I hope we get to see your journey through one piece! be really careful with spoilers tho :(
My favorite villain has to be Buggy. I love his wacky side, but once you keep reading you'll probably understand my other reasons for loving the jester.
