  • Even colder today and George my 1.3 1990 Peugeot 309 has been sitting in the road since Friday....It's now Monday.
    Day off work so time for another cold start!
    I also pull the cover off my 1989 Peugeot 309 1.6 GLX who was happily sleeping for the winter to see if she is up for it as well...haha!!!
    Thanks for watching! :)

    Even though this were recorded a mere eight years ago it's amazing the amount of cars on the road that would today be considered mildly interesting.

    Really lovely 309s you've got there!
    I own a 1988 205 XE 954cc 4 gears, starts up like brand new even after 6 months sitting without even disconnecting the battery!
    It happened to me a few times too to start it in extreme cold and I was surprised too to see it liking the full choke like your 309 does, normally I have to be superfast pushing it back in to avoid the engine revving too high.
    And what you said about the comfy seats, light steering and great visibility is the pure truth!!

  • @88GTi
    @88GTi  11 років тому +1

    I'm not saying this because I have two of my own...They are Great!
    I use 'George' the 1.3 OHV 309 every day to go to work and back...He never misses a beat...Rain or shine...Hot or cold! At the end of the day when I get out of my 2012 modern work car and back into the 309 for the drive home, old George feels like a Rolls Royce! Comfy seats, lite steering, great visibility...Everything is in the right place! 40+mpg! Both aced their MOT's in November...No advisories! GET ONE!!! :)

      Should have bought it! They are great cars...This video was made in 2012 and they are both still going strong!
      No rust, no issues...Just fun! The 1.6 flew through its MOT last weekend...No advisories :)

      Yeah well, my Renault Megane II 1.6 was getting repaired (well, it was more of a post mortem after the throttle body exploded on the motorway) and I was hopeful it would be back on the road: but alas, I was wrong!
      Currently dailying a Peugeot 106 1.1, which isn't the fastest thing in the world, but it sure is a bag of fun round corners and in the city. Always keeping my eye out for 80s-90s Peugeot's though: getting rarer by the day here in the UK :(

    • @88GTi
      @88GTi  6 років тому +1

      I've had a bad day and you're making me laugh...Thank you! 'Post Mortem'...haha!!! So sorry for your loss! At least you can find humour in the situation. 106's are good...Getting far less common now. I like the TU engines, you're right though, a 1.1 106 with a CAT won't break any land speed records. It's the little 106 pedals that get me...Too small for my feet. The thing about 309's unlike other Peugeots is they were designed to be right hand drive...No Peugeot that I've driven feels as nice to drive as a 309. I really like the TU 1360cc (1.4) non CAT 309's, 205's and 106's...They will eat my XU5 1.6 309 for breakfast and she is by no means slow! The blue 309 you can see in this video was one of them...He's now in the scrapyard in the sky with your Megane...Poor old fella got hit 3 times while parked. The last time killed him. RIP Henry you never let us down...Especially taking cars out from a standing start at Traffic Lights...haha!!!

      +SCS 106 GTI...Very fast little car! If you can master the tiny pedals...haha!!! No problems like that with a 309...You will love your 309GTI once its on the road!!!

    Hi Martyn...I always find genuine parts at pocket money prices on a popular auction site.
    The other 309 has the later 1.4 TU engine like the 106, 206, 306...Got the gearbox from a 206 with less than 50K for 50 quid. My 1.3 has the same OHV engine as a Talbot Horizon...Chain driven sewing machine engine...last forever! The 1.6 has the XU OHC engine as used in the 205.
    The 309 was the first British built Peugeot, even the brake servo is on the right, wipers round the right way too! :)

    I have a Peugeot 309 GRD, year 1991, I used every day to go to work.
    She eats no oil, no water and no smoke!
    This winter we had very cold in the Alps as everywhere.
    By -20 degrees Celsus, every night to sleep outside, one blow heating, easy startup quarter turns.
    It has 343 000 km only, no rust and no electronic problems too ! lol
    I keep all my life !

    Hey I really enjoyed this little vid! I used to have 1.9 diesel 309 - utterly dependable and a pleasure to drive and own. It had those little luxuries like electric windows, central locking and a rev counter too, which some cars of a similar age either didn't have or were very expensive extras. Looking back I don't know why I let that car go. Age, I guess? Well I know better now - new cars, fancy and tech brimmed as they are - are unreliable junk.

    • @88GTi
      @88GTi  9 років тому +1

      BobM925 Hi Bob, thanks for the nice comment! This video was made over three years ago...I still have both 309's, and they are both running better than ever! I agree with you about new cars...I have one provided for me by the company I work for...It enjoys a visit to the garage almost monthly, aways due to over complicated technology failures. If it was mine I would have dumped it by now, and it has only done 20K miles...haha!!!I woke my 1.6 GLX up from her winter sleep about a month ago, and have been using her daily ever since, for a car made in 1989 and registered on the 10th of January 1990 she does have loads of extras...Probably a similar package to your diesel.
      You have to own, or have owned a 309 to appreciate how good they are...By your comment its clear you do! Thanks again! :)

    • @BobM925
      @BobM925 9 років тому

      88GTi That's brill! Glad you've still got them. I learned to drive in a 205, and owned a couple of them before the 309. Must be 13 years since I owned the 309, still miss it. I've owned some sheds over the years, lol, but the 309 and an old Vauxhall Cavalier I owned were two of my favourites

    • @88GTi
      @88GTi  9 років тому

      Haha!!! That's great! I also have a Peugeot 205 GTi and before the Peugeot's I had 2 Cavaliers in succession. The first one was a 1982 1.6L in henna red, I part exchanged it for a 9 month old 1987 2.0 litre CDi in nordic blue. They were great cars...But they rusted quite badly. The 2.0 litre CDi got bubbles on the wheel arches before its second birthday. Luckily the old 309's don't rust...I'm going to keep both of mine for as long as I can...I think they'll both do another 25 years...haha!!! :)

    • @BobM925
      @BobM925 9 років тому +1

      88GTi Cool - another Cav fan, lol. Mine were all the curvy Mk3 ones, I've owned three of them and all very rust prone. It's only a year since my last and favourite of all the cars I'v ever owned, an M-Reg LS 1.8, departed. A sad day for me and though mechanically A1 she required far too many costly rot repairs :( Now driving a modern Mondeo which, while nice to drive, has had far too many silly faults over the last 11 months than that last Cavalier had in 6 years. Hey ho, car's eh? It's always great to talk to a proper car fan - you can keep yer Porsche's and Lambo's gimme a proper run-of the-mill but dependable motor any day!

    Just seen your other comment...If you can find one...Get one!

      Unfortunately no, the guy who I was supposed to be buying from upped the price to a ridiculous price! No where near what it was agreed, basically tried to bend me over a barrel, iv litteraly on Friday just bought a alfa romeo 147 1.9 jtdm 16v instead, modern car yes, however it's still got a load of character that you don't really see these days. Hope your 309s are still pulling strong!

    Good old Norma!...She was fast asleep for the winter and I woke her up good and proper!
    Yes she is much sportier than George in every way!
    He is the base model and she is the 'GLX' model. She has a much more powerful engine!
    George didn't even come with a rev counter...That is a GLX dash that I fitted when I got him nearly 6 years ago! They're both great old cars though!
    George wants a Blue scraper and Norma wants a Pink one...haha!!! :)

  • @88GTi
    @88GTi  12 років тому

    @RedRoosterRoad I have the two 309's...Next to the 309 under cover is a mint condition metallic black 1988 VW Golf GTI.
    In front of George under the other cover is a mint condition red Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI.
    I have a black Austin Mini in the small garage in front of the 205 GTI.
    Before you ask why so many cars?...They're all old and on classic car insurance which is very cheap...I can do any work on them myself and I'm not very keen on new cars.
    Hope that answers your question :)

    Never had a problem with spares, apart from servicing they never seem to need anything
    eBay is loaded with genuine parts at pocket money prices...Window glass and body panels might be hard to find...I've been putting things like that away for ages just in case. I also have spare starters, altenators, water pumps and carbs for both of them tucked away. I did change the water pump on the 1.6GLX when I did the cam belt...Just in case, the original was still fine though. Best cars I've ever had! :)

    Make sure the choke flaps are closing when its cold. They should shut when you push the accelerator once. If they do shut...Don't pump the accelerator or hold it down when you crank as you will be opening them and taking the choke off. To cold start my 1.6 GLX...One pump, foot off and crank...Starts fine.
    If your chokes aren't closing you have more work to do on your carb.
    Don't know which distributor yours has...My 1.6 GLX has the same as the 1.4 TU engine...Black and square 'ish'.

    @RedRoosterRoad If you leave the clutch up when you crank the car you are also turning the gearbox which in this weather puts more strain on the battery and starter motor.
    The gearbox oil is all thick due to the cold...You saw the revs drop when I lifted the clutch up on the 309's as the gearbox engaged...Doesn't matter so much when the weather is warmer.
    I might start the other two soon...Both of them have been unstarted since the end of July!!! :)

    No..He wasn't started before I got in...The gauge goes to that postion as soon as you switch the ignition on.
    If you tried to start him with the choke full out once he had already fired...You'd get nowhere...he'd just crank forever and flood.
    Please feel free to come round on the coldest day in winter and start him yourself :)

      You have a keen eye! It's a basic 40 channel CB radio. Make is a Eurosonic III. I only keep it there now for a PA horn behind the front grille. It may be 9 years later, but he's still fine! Currently sorned due to Covid, but I moved him around on the drive today. The other 309 and my 205 are still in use though :)

    Well done! The weathers going to be cold for a while...It really saves your battery and starter motor!
    We had to change the gearbox on the blue 309 last weekend...It has a different engine to both of mine...It's the same engine as your 206 but with a carb...The replacement gearbox came from a 206...Don't panic...It wasn't yours...haha!!! :)

    where did you get your car covers from and how much where they thanks

    • @88GTi
      @88GTi  8 років тому

      +AGDFRY It's just a cheap nylon slip over cover so the seat doesn't wear...I got them years ago from a wholesalers that is now closed. They came with rear covers (which I didn't use) I've just had a look on eBay...There are loads similar for around £3.50 a pair.
