- How to raise and replace a sprinkler head for beginners - using a riser.
The key is to know what your supply in the ground looks like, and how that will eventually tie into your new rotar. In my case, I have ½” supply and a ½” inlet so I’m a straight shot, hence why this is a beginner video.

The only thing I wished you would have acknowledged in the tutorial. Is the sch.80 riser you used. I would rather people know that it is better to use a flex or poly riser if a commercial mower or riding mower is being used on your lawn. I go to countless lawn calls for broken pipes or risers a year that could be preventive by using an alternative riser. Love seeing how your revamping your Florida lawn. I am a landscaper over here in Polk county. Love the videos :)

what I usually do every spring is give each sprinkler head a shot of Roundup, it kills the grass growing on top and just around it. It really helps to keep them clear,.
RainBird 42SA+. Just replaced a bunch of old Orbitz with them last week. Super easy to set the pattern.

This vid was like perfect timing for me. I just moved from Mississippi back up to Indiana and yesterday turned on the irrigation system and (hopefully) found and dug out all the buried heads and discovered a rotating Rain Bird 5000 that's not rotating and another fan spray style that must be clogged since it pops up but doesn't spray. Thanks for all the tips through the years. I look forward to dominating here as I have in my past two homes with your helpful vids.
rain birds are awesome sprinklers in my opinion, i work for a landscaping company and 9 times out of 10 when i find and have to fix a broken rotatory head is some other brand (orbits, hunter, K2..ect) just from my experience. on to the point, when i find a rain bird that's not spinning like it should, i always try and spin the head manually while it's active. over the winter/off season, they get gummed up and some times just need to be spun to remind them to spin correctly. ill restart the zone/valve a few times and check if it spins again or if it is really broken. cheers and best of luck dominating
Ricky McGrath, I'm with you. I've tried just about every brand/type of sprinkler head and nozzle combo. So far, the Hunter PRS head with MP Rotator has been the best.
David Crawford they are! Rainbird has some similar nozzles. It takes a little getting used to though. The lower flow rates requires longer run times. Gives a little anxiety when you nearly double your run times.
I have changed all my heads to Hunter MP Rotator heads in the main areas and Hunter Strip Spray nozzles in the easements and parkways. My lawn has never looked this good! Lower flow rates, larger droplet sizes, better wind resistance and less run off!
I have the hunter mp800 series, and I love them. Great coverage and low GPM as you said.

Looks good. For us in snow climates, we like to keep them a little lower - otherwise they get nailed by the snow blower in the winter, or the City grader if it's close to the road.
I went with K-RAIN Rotors too. "For the price and availability" these are the best residential heads around. I have has them running for over 2 years with zero stoppages. Highly recommended.

While it might not look good at first, I take the trimmer and form a bowl shape around the sprinkler heads, eventually the grass grows back but the ground will be slightly lower leaving the the heads unobstructed.

ok, so now you got me questioning my selection of heads on my irigation sys! I have just used sprayers in the front and rotors in backyard, but, I might have to rethink that strategy! I can't dominate with piss ant sprayers, lol!

What are your thoughts about the difference between bar style mower blades and disc style "swing back" blades. Here we only have the disc style and I was curious about the pros and cons.

I know you like the K1 but I always use Orbit (aka) Hunter PGP. The Orbit head is exactly the same as the Hunter PGP head but it is half the price as a Hunter PGP head. Great coverage results and you can also change the dispersion pattern with different inserts into the head. Once you choose which dispersion pattern you need you can raise or lower the little screw to add more dispersion if needed.
I totally agree with raising the heads though because SA loves to dominate sprinkler heads when it grows at 3.5 to 4.0 inches tall.

Have you looked into the Hunter or Toro rotator nozzles? these may help with your coverage if have to many heads per zone. The gpm is less then rotors and you can get them up to a 35ft radius. you will need to increase your run time per zone.
Thanks for the great video. I have old Toro 700 heads and they only pop up 3.5" and I mow at 4-1/4" So even after a fresh mow they aren't clearing the grass. I was going to raise them like you did, but many claim that the top of the sprinkler head should be even with the ground or they will get damaged by the lawnmower. Have you had any issues with that?

Hello Sir, I like the idea of the k1 or k2 if I change two only, do I have to change all of them there's 8 heads total?
I made myself a great tool for trimming around sprinkler heads. Just a 6 inch length of 4" electrical conduit.. I cut teeth on the end and attached a tee handle to it.. Slip it over the head and rotate it back and forth to cut the grass thach matted around the head. Works great.. However you can't do it with the water running, unless you want to get soaked. I just place locating markers in the lawn to find them.
I go one step further I surround the sprinkler head in with a PVC pipe to protect it from grass growing around it and makes it easier to remove.

I plan of replacing some of my 4 inch pop ups with a different model, some of them are already sunk down and need to be raised up about 2 inches, since I grow my grass long anyway can I just replace the 4 inch pop up with 6 inch then I won’t have to raise them up correct

I need a little of advice from really anyone on here. I just got back home from a deployment and my lawn care while I was gone wasn't the best I have a couple of areas in my lawn that got killed by a weed killer and then invaded by weeds and pretty much settling in pretty solid. I'm new to caring for my own lawn so I'm looking for advice to how I should start the recovering process. Should I cut it out and lay sod, spray the weeds and lay seeds? I'm in west Florida and have centipede grass. Any advice from anyone would be awesome thank you in advance and btw I love this channel.

Switch your heads to spray heads 1/2 inlets (just like you wanted) with Hunter MP nozzles will save you water and give you the coverage you need. For best results stay @ 40 psi at the head use Pros04 or pros06 If u have more than 40 psi use a psi regulated spray head. Love your videos

So I've been thatching my lawn and I let my grass go 3 days without mowing and it's leaving grass buildup behind guess a have to mow every two days, any way what can I do about the grass build up left by my wheels now ? Also how often should I clean my mower ?

My previous lawn was wet all day in super dry and 90-100 degree temperatures but my current lawn/soil dries out instantly, and the lawn is in low temperatures and humid environment?? Is there a specific product or soil I should add to the lawn to keep the soil moist without constant watering?
And LNC, how much would you charge to mow my lawn??

The shovel you were using is called a "sharpshooter". Love em for your application and breaking up dirt if you're digging a hole and then use a round point shovel to scoop out the broken up dirt 👍🏽

Great Video. I would also recommend using a swing pipe assembly that moves the rotor up and down so it is easier to set the desired height and if some settling does occur you can raise it up no problem also prevents from breaking if run over since it is flexible

Thanks for all the great videos. I have found it helpful to blow out the zone that my sprinkler head is on with an air compressor before removing the defective sprinkler head. It avoids filling the hole with water, soil and small rocks that can get in the lines.

Why sand? Does it promote growth?
Your push mower will work fine, but if the head is that far above grade, a heavy mower may eventually cause break at the connection when it’s run over repeatedly.
Going through this now as well. I picked the orbit Saturn III as my go to. It was the only 1/2 inch Home Depot by me carries that has reasonable range and is comparable in size as the last ones for easy drop in. Excellent video as usual sir, thank you.

I have replaced all of my hunter sprinklers over the last10 years I have lived in my current home. I have added 5-6 concrete donuts stacked on top of each to each sprinkler location. This way when I have to adjust or raise the position I can use wooden shims and for replacing I simply remove the donuts and I have a hole to the bottom of the sprinkler. I also keep my sprinkler heads trimmed clean so the pop up is never obstructed. I have never received a good reason why my irrigation guy does not like the donuts but I think it is simply an aesthetics thing.

yes they need to be cleared out with a compressor.

Usually you'd need to add some more sprays to equal the coverage of a rotor. How are you getting the correct coverage after replacing the rotor heads with sprays? Rotors will need to run longer, but you can replace a whole section of spray heads with a couple of rotors.
I still have rotars, they are just 1/2" now instead of the 3/4" that were there. I've found this increases the pressure at all heads and gives me better overall coverage

The one thing I don't like about K-Rain compared to RainBird and Orbit is their "hiss" when running is louder than the other brands but I do like the price over the RB and O.
