Artist's Crash Course: Booklet Printing in InDesign

- There are a lot of artists out there that make good money at conventions selling sketchbooks and minicomics printed from their desktop printers. All it takes is Letter-sized sheets of paper and a stapler.
The trick is organizing the pages so they are in the right order when you staple and fold your book down the middle (that's called 2-Up Saddle Stich binding). Unfortunately, artists that don't know about InDesign's booklet printing will often do that page reorganizing (imposition) process by hand in Illustrator or Photoshop as separate documents for each spread.
You don't have to do that! You can quickly lay out your booklet in InDesign and have it prepare a single PDF file for you, with the imposition taken care of automatically.
I have searched for days about the stupid master file making everything the same. Your simple tip to turn it off/delete it saved me!
I was told to use indesign and make a professional book straight away for my fucking art portfolio and I couldn't figure anything out after printing so many times I've had a few fucking mental breakdowns rn and I hope this works. If it does, you are a saint you deserve the world mate
Excellent tutorial, I have just missed out the checking mark of Facing page, Now solved my problem about multiple page INDD file.
Thank you! Your instructions are clear and easy to follow compared to the other vids.
WOW. Thank you so much! I've been terrified of InDesign for so long - but the way you explained how it works makes it seem like actually a much simpler program than PS or AI.
Thanks Glen that was a great tutorial! I have not used InDesign in years and this was a great refresher. I think I can design this catalog now!
thanks a lot!!! I was struggling with printing proper booklet. after watching this video have done it in a couple of minutes!

Great Tutorial! Tackled most of all I need to get started.
What if I want to create a seamless design on the cover page (page 1 and 16 in your example)? Could I do it together with the contents or should I make a new Document just for the cover page?
GREAT JOB and thank you sir! You explained it so clearly and made the process almost effortless! **Virtual Hug**
THANKS ALOT GLEN, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK !
Great tutorial. I'm sorry but you sound exactly like Badger from Breaking Bad!
+adam f I was thinking the same thing
LOL badger was low-key an indesign master.
Super helpful! Thanks Glen.
Sure. Just set your paper size to A5, which is the same as an A4 folded in half. (I really wish we would adopt the international standard here in America. There's a few advantages to that system.)
Just what I was looking for, thanks
Awesome tut. Thanks!
"master of none" lol
for real tho this is a great tutorial, thank you!
Thanks a lot bro, from dominican republic!
This was good, but currently your booklet starts at page 2 - how do you get it to start at page one - in other words, for the 'page 1' marking to show on the 2nd or even a later page? Thanks.
Section breaks. I'm just getting my feet wet in inDesign, but if you can section breaks in Quark, you sure as anything should be able to do it in inDesign.
This was helpful but how do you do it for a calendar that has already been flattened and set up in reader spreads?
Very very helpful! Thanks!
This is very helpful, thanks a lot.
This is very useful. Thanks
Thanks, you are a life saver !
Hi
I have one question. You delete the first page no. by placing NONE page over it and our page no.actually start from 2, but incase we want to have it from one(page1) how can we make page 2 to be 1 and the rest to follow accordingly?
Thanks for the video.
Bonus points for being a PC user.
Nice tutorial!
You'll need to have Adobe Distiller installed. I'm pretty sure this is part of Acrobat Pro (I have the suite so it's hard to tell what program comes with which).
If you don't have Distiller installed, you can save it as a PostScript file, and then use Acrobat Pro to convert the PostScript file to a PDF.
thanks! explained it nicely.
Thanks a lot this was really helpful, been doing everything in photoshop prior to this ugggh haha
You have to have the professional version of Adobe PDF, or maybe you just have to reinstall the driver if it came with your InDesign software.
Thanks a lot! Great work!
Thanks a million! Just save me lot of time
great sir
Hi. I bought a brochure template from graphicriver which is in A4 format. Is there anyway to change it to A5, as that is the size I need. Thanks for any help!

sweet tutorial but for the love of god i just want to resize my pdf pages all at once. i know this can do it but if i was to open a file would it transfer all my images from my pdf in order or do i have to add them individually? sorry im new to this:)
Very useful!
Thank you! I've been obsessing over how to print a thing as a booklet for two days before I realised indesign could probably do it for me... *facepalm* I didn't see the option print as booklet, thinking it'd be under export somewhere.. coughdumbcough
can you edit the image count when your done and you have too many blank pages?
Helped a lot. Thank you.
Is there a way I can do this with 19 x 26 size paper and print multiple pages? I was having the hardest time with this today :(
dude, i'm a noob at indesign cause i just started it today but i wonder how do you make a right to left page? thankyou
thank you for the tutorial
I was sure to do every thing as you said, but when I save my booklet as a PDF. I just get the pages that have even numbers. could anyone help me, please?
is there a way to do "tabloid-half" when setting up a document??
Hi. I am making a A5 booklet, how should I make the "bleed" ??
InDesign's "Print Booklet" dialog can do that for you. You can enter the "creep" amount there so it will put the appropriate gap between pages.
Very helpful, thanks.
THANKS for the video!
great tutorial, many thanks. can u pls just explain what is duplex printing? i never learned inDesign at Uni coz it was all QuarkXpress back then, so i am now trying to learn at home....not the easiest of tasks.
I have a book ia want to design, but its almost 70 pages long, i want to know, how could insert the text once, not actually copying and pasting every page at it self...
Great Vid!!

I have this error message that says I can't print because the document as different sizes. That' weird because I used a template of A5 size. Any tips?
this is amazing.. thank u so much
Was really helpful, thanks :)
is there a way to do "legal-half"?
Wouldn't it be better if you were to actually place the images into In design otherwise they'll be errors in the links?
Can this be used for CD booklets?
thank you for sharing...

Dude. Thanks.

Very helpful however at the end you set the printer to Adobe PDF, I've tried to do this but the option isn't there, who do I get Adobe PDF as a option. Many thanks
Same question here..
um...yes. Its called InDesign....its in the title
thank youuuu
Can I do this with text in that programme?
how to make a small booklet size
Tnxs!!!!!!!
Anybody know what swatches panel that was in photoshop? :D
glenmoyes.blogspot.com/2008/10/color-wheel-photoshop-swatches.html I made these a while ago, and the panel width is now bigger so the swatches will look slanted. I haven't released a new version of it in quite some time, but it is on my list. It's not too hard to edit it in Photoshop to add the extra columns.
My hero! LOL
there's one very serious problem:
When you print a real booklet, you MUST account for the loss of page width for each page that goes towards the center pages of the rib.
