  • Yoshimitsu Yamada, a direct student of O Sensei for more than ten years, is an 8th dan and the chief instructor at the New York Aikikai. Currently, he is Chairman of the Board of the United States Aikido Federation and the Latin America Aikido Federation. He is the author of Aikido Complete and has made multiple aikido training tapes.
Yamada Sensei is well known for his clear and strong basic technique. He teaches seminars all over the world where thousands of students attend his classes.
    Quote:
"We must keep the spirit of budo no matter how we practice."
Q: You were one of the earlier uchideshi at the Aikikai. What year did you start?
A: When I joined as an uchideshi only Tamura Sensei and Arikawa Sensei were there. Yasuo Kobayashi was still in college. He came to the dojo every day. I entered when I was 17. I am 53 now, so it must have been 1955.

Yeah Yamada Sensei is an awesome Shihan. I met him quite a few years ago when he came to Tenzan Aikido (formerly Seattle Aikikai). He's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet :)

I’m an Aikido student and I practice really well and very hard and I don’t miss practices and I’m never late and I always show up on time and my next exam is the 3rd Kyu and than I can work harder and harder and I train like a Samurai and when the Sensei saids please try I just get it through my
Head and I know how to do those movements and I can know on every exam in Aikido I would know how to do it already so my next belt is the blue belt

Yeah I was definitely glad to meet him. Shihan is just the japanese word for "Grandmaster". I'm assuming that you know it already but figured it would be good to mention it just in case :)

The USAF tends to create so much space when doing techniques. You always see how yamada has to lean excessively forward making his own self off balance.

I am very skeptical of typical Hombu Aikido like this, I have trained in Nihon Goshin Aikido for 2 years and I am currently a San Kyu( green belt) however I just can see this type of training translating in a real fight

+Shauna Smith I think your skepticism is apt. I train in a style similar to this but occasionally we are shown daito ryu & iwama techniques. I would train Yoshinkan but it's not possible where I am. Maybe some day.
