- Inspired by the Dalai Lama, Tibetans have built their own democratic institutions in exile. A fully-functioning representative democracy with formerly His Holiness the Dalai Lama as head of state to Sikyong a new elected leader, Tibetans-in-Exile saw a gradual transition in the last half century. But democracy in exile has its fair share of limitations. In this section of 'Young Minds' we sat down with college students of Delhi to talk about democracy in exile.

VoT, fantastic opinions from the Youth on democracy and its current situation in our society. Truthful, blunt and insightful opinions and observations. In future, if you could do this kind of thing often in different places - colleges/universities and in the Tibetan Settlements, would be very educative and eye opening venture from the media. Our society is very small comparative to other countries and would not be that difficult. In my opinion, especially before the election of Sikyong and Chithues. Also, if you have the resources, it would be helpful in spreading the importance of exercising the democractic power to choose the right person. Since our society is not that educated in political science and its functionality, lots of tips, information and its background education on the subject is imperative. Sometimes, I really feel that democracy is given a bit early enough that those who are educated, they do not speak and take the responsibility. On the contrary, people who are mediocre, take this advantage and steer it to the other side of democratic right and misled the mass public to whom they think they know all. Educated people are either silent or avoid taking the charge and educating the public in the right direction. Lots of awareness and educating the public is needed if we have to move on with the rest of the world. We are far behind in the field as said by the above youth which I truly support. I appreciate for these youths in expressing thoroughly and participating in such a beautiful needed subject. Hats off to the organizer. Thanks.

Great discussion… good that the young generation have realized the problem of democracy and tribalism.it can be that tribalism may have been caused by historical events but how comes that one find sectarianism, regionalism and communalism in nearly every villages in Tibet??? 1) Seniors MP’s(Kashag) and Ministers(Kalaon) who have served a lot are requested to take a leave or take retirement from their designated seats for our future generations to come who have already studied politics and have a bigger perspectives, vision and just. Unlike wasting our time and setting bad examples across the globe. We don’t need your well polished manifesto. Sick of Don Lobsang Sangey and Don Penpa Tsering. We don’t need bullshit from Harvard or anyone who has served the most in CTA. Both are no less than Donkey🫏 and Sheep🐑 always indulge in legal fights and disrupt the peace and divide peace loving Tibetan.
2) Two parties are advisable in Tibetan Exile democracy. One from Ruling and other that of opposition to strengthen our constitution for future stability of our governing bodies. But please do not repeat same old rigidity system and unfair means of seats allocation as reserved for Cholkha(Regionalism) and Chodlug(Religious Order) particularly for monks. The monks has no dual rights in casting of votes. They have enjoyed enough allocation of seats from both Cholkha and Chodlug. In total they had enjoyed unfair rights from both end with 10+10(20) seats reserved for them. These has to be eradicate first to run the government effectively. They have the option to choose one among these two titles either Cholkha or Chodlug if not capable of making 02 parties for time being. Needed to amend this in the next term. I believe they would choose the latter one Chodlug. The reason why they have to face a rigorous competition on Cholkha elections to have mandatory requirements on educational grounds about politics.
3)Thanks a lot VOT for covering these productive discussions from our youth. I see hope in near future but fed up of egoistic,illiterate and last but not the least experienced politicians who has caused so much ruckus in our societies in the name of regionalism.
Monks exercising in both votes(Cholkha and Chodlug) are truly disgusting and disturbing. This old system has to break for greater benefits and equalities amongst all and to avoid setbacks.

Interesting presentation. However, democracy in the United States is NOT just or fair. Even with its citizens having the right to vote, nine times out of ten the person who gets into office is the one who was able to amass great sums of money from special interest groups and political lobbyists which means that position was actually won by the person who had the most money. Real issues that either benefits society or takes away their rights are dependent on the power these special interest groups and lobbyists have over the politician. Intimidation and coercion from the Administration also influences their power over the congress and senate.

The Paliament and the government should formulate Tibetan flag regulations and laws. The Paliament and the government should discuss the production of a unified flag and distribute it to the Paliament, government departments, foreign agencies, all schools, communities, and social groups. They should pay the cost of making the flag. Revenue goes to Paliament and the government.
