watching marty on todd's lap giggling and having fun is so incredibly chilling and disturbing knowing all that happens going forward. todd and marty had one of the most complex relationships in daytime, and aside from the...stuff with tsj that was...gross, to say the least, it was always done really thoughtfully and with full knowledge of the impact that it would have on the audience.
Absolutely well said. The gang rape was done so well & what made it so terrifying & brutal was its something that sadly happens too much in real life on drunken college campuses. So they did the story dead serious. The trial was excellent b/c I loved when hank presented his case it wasn't the usual main characters to start off with or drama that got revealed among other characters like many soapy trials. They had hank put on clinical witnesses from the hospital social workers pathologists that were not main characters except for Shelia who was Marty's initial rape counselor. So that was really great cause that is what really happens in a criminal trial particularly a brutal gang rape. The attention to detail & production was also amazing. Like the point of view shots they did from the rape shoeing it from Marty's view & then from each of the rapists view. They also did a great job editing all the things going on in the room. The little details that Marty or any person would remember when flashing back. Like when Todd first threw her down shots of the skull jar filled w/ candy falling down the fish tank from Marty's p.o.v & all angles the shot of the bracelet ripped off the shudders clapping. Emphasis on that sound. So when we look back on things we recall sounds image's in flashes so when Marty or Todd mainly flashed back those things were shown rapidly. When Todd finally forced himself to remember the rape & times w/ Marty later those images were used in his memory & zeroed in on the sound that those shudders kept making. Also the rain outside. Also the attention as I mentioned I read that the music ( which was all timely & excellent Metallica, nirvana nine inch nails, r.e.m etc ) was carefully chosen for the frat party to start out right before all the party guests packed the place was light & happy. Then as the party went on & the drinking & partying & todd & Marty had confrontations that escalated to the point of the rape the music got darker & darker. I thought wow that's so brilliant. The first song was " shiny happy people " then started increasing darkness to when Todd gets his idea nine inch nails head like a hole starts playing & the words scarily matched his twisted thought to first rape her " bow down to who u serve ur going to get what u deserve " also when Todd & the party was almost Getting animalistic w/ youth going wild getting more & more stoned & Todd literally was now chugging hard liquor from a huge bottle nirvana teen spirit was playing. It culminated w/ the crowd downstairs completely packed people going nuts dancing on tables drinking like crazy & they grabbed the pizza guy & made him crowd surf & upstairs w/ the music blasting as Todd came in looking down at Marty like a predator trapping his prey Metallica " enter sandman " was playing. The lyrics could not be more in sync a song about ur worst nightmare " take my hand were off to never never land " a good call back was a really memorable & great line to describe Todd & Marty up to the last time Todd tried to attack her at the tabernacle of joy he was on top of her saying " hang on girl cause we're going straight to hell" indeed. They both were in hell for a year . Of course a hell Todd made but both were in hell Marty still having the horrible nightmares of the rape & Todd completely at his most pychotic having been on the run expressing he was hunted Like an animal which obviously in some ways is just as bad as prison. No money no food no shelter & having to hide constantly as a man hunt was going all around the entire east coast. I always thought when Todd went full on psychopath cause he did actually get worse after the rape from his head injuries. The one from Luna then his self imposed one in a very disturbing scene of the shadow of Todd banging his head as hard ad he could against the concrete wall in solitary at the prison. So yes it's pretty amazing how at this point I don't think the gang rape was planned yet when Todd & Marty went to bed together. Them having a consensual one night stand worked out brilliantly later. In particular for the trial . They were trying to use it against Marty that she did have consensual sex w/ Todd & that doesn't mean she couldn't have still been raped. It shows how important consistent consensual sex must always be given. I read about a rape case where the one guy of a 2 man gang rape got off b/c he had sex w/ the victim consensually. But the other man was found guilty b/c he didn't have consented sex w/ the victim. Which makes no sense in a " gang rape " trial where evidence was submitted of a phone convo where both men admitted to sex w/ her at the same time. So how do u find one guilty & not the other ? So an article & statements were made how sex once w/ a guy or twice doesn't mean sex is always fine b/c u slept w/ the person once if she says no on a different occasion. When they were building up to the rape Marty did say to Todd & later to hank when he got concerned when Marty admitted she slept w/ Todd she said " so b/c I slept w/ the guy once it means he can just rape me whenever he feels like it. " I loved that hank said he agreed but sadly jurors have & would always be swayed by that fact. Even Todd b4 the rape kept saying they had sex & right b4 the rape he said to Zack & Powell " I already slept w/ her once do don't I get first claim!" Which is pretty sick like what Marty said to hank. I think b4 Todd started evolving & feeling remorse to overwhelming guilt & torment he really thought b/c Marty had sex w/ him he had some rights to her or claims or ownership. Like hey she did it once willingly so she had to have been OK w/ it later. Obviously I think Todd was just so in denial he couldn't have really believed that. Esp when he brought 2 other guys. Finally even doing the story was very bold & pretty brave. To put a gang rape of a college girl on a soap. I read an article about gang rape & that once a man orchestrates it how other guys who normally wouldn't ever think to rape a woman do in that situation. Like it's bizarrely contagious I think it was interesting when I read that article by a group of Dr's who specialize in why men rape women did a study about this gross gang rape mentality that Powell represented a guy who never would have done that if not in that situation. Doesn't make him the victim as Powell for awhile made himself out to be or horrifyingly Nora his head cheerleader & pretty much many others made him out to be. Like when max & others said to Powell " ur not like the other 2 " so I'm glad when Powell went on to serial raping b/c he obviously had something wrong w/ him that he did rape a kind of friend b/c he wanted Todd to like him is not a well adjusted person. So when bo starred to see all the evidence point to Powell who he also praised him said " u know the statistics say a guy who rapes will most likely reoffend " was Also really good to tell the audience. Micheal Malone loved his morality tales & I'll never get why he had power only get 1 year to Todd & zacks 8 years. I can only think at that point he wanted maybe people out there to see if ur really sorry & confess to a hideous crime u will be rewarded as some such garbage. It also bothered me that Nora pressured Marty to speak to the judge about going easy on Powell was disturbing. Fine b/c he confessed & showed remorse give him an earlier parole or knock a year off his sentence but in Reality since Powell willingly confessed he was not offered a plea deal. I think having shown Powell & Todd's motivations Todd's more so Zack was really a sociopath. I don't think if Todd didn't come up w/ it that Zack would have raped Marty either. But his attitude about raping someone he had no issue or anger or rage towards was really Scary how nonchalant he was. Like he did it just to go along for the ride. When Todd told Zack to lock the door & Marty said " Zack please don't " he responded " no problem babe. " then Todd told Powell to do it which he did. So it really showed Zack did not care either way. If Todd said forget it he most likely would have. Todd did it out of rage & degradation. Powell b/c he was unbalanced & had a very weird sick obsession w/ Todd did it & he was a coward ( which I actually thought made Powell a special kind of despicable. To rape a woman b/c ur a coward is just no words. Not like any motive is OK but Powell literally was getting sick out the window that threw up after. He knew how wrong didn't even want to do it but not only doesn't he help Marty but does it too ??
Yea he was a very normal typical guy. I remember when I first saw this scene years later it was crazy to see him & Marty sharing a joint. Todd did not give off a rapey creepy vibe at all in his early encounters w/ Marty. The next time he saw her he typically wanted to go right back to her place again. He pulled her close & kissed her. It was sorta crazy that Marty kissed him back & then a second time just to screw w/ him. I thought she overreacted to the gang rape.
1993, probably, which was when I started watching. Over the next few years...one of my favorite eras of any soap. Just about every story they introduced worked for me. (Some thought they dragged out the Marty-Todd storyline, but it made sense to me. Her trauma wasn't something she'd get over anytime soon) I'd like to have seen a little more of Marty the (wild,reckless, unhappy) party girl in full flower. Soon after this she was earnest in trying to reform David Ledingham as SuedePruitt - 1992-94

He was grabbing Marty & asked for her bra she pushed him off then he said " I just need the damn thing give it to me " & he grabbed harder onto Marty & wouldn't let go as Jason came to her rescue. Then a full on brawl ensued w/ the 3 frat boys Jason & the whole bar. What's Also funny is I believe Blair was standing behind Todd in that scene but played by Mia korf. Also Todd was sitting later watching Dorian slap Jason at the bar. Jason slapped her back which I'm sorry maybe it's a double standard but it was very upsetting to see him slap Dorian. He said something that on a soap warrants a slap plus she was a classy elder to Jason. Fine & she's a woman & when I say that she was much smaller than Jason. Anyway Todd was shown in the same frame as the slaps watching from his table & a commenter made me crack up saying " Todd watched Jason slap Dorian, he must have liked that " which was funny given Todd & dorians many many hostile run ins once he was involved w/ Blair in the future. It's always so great to see a character that becomes popular their first scenes & the people they meet & later have relationships with. Like it's so cool to see frat boy Todd meeting viki for the first time & shaking hands.
