    A little something different for you guys, plus some foreshadowing for tomorrows video ;). I often get questions about my pallet disassembly technique so I figured I'd make a video about that talking about my process. I think I'm going to try to put more videos like this together where I can dive a bit deeper into certain subjects along with my build videos. Let me know what you think.

    Nice video, I find it interesting you save and use the slats and trash the stringers. I do just the opposite, I don't mind doing the work on the stringers and I feel they yield better lumber. For the one with the side fork notch, I will just get thinner or smaller parts from them.

    Great idea using the palm nailer. I usually go over the slats quickly with a wire brush to get some of the sand/dirt/schmig to save my jointer and planer knives. I guess you could always use dedicated blades for your planer/jointer too

    I also cut off the ends, way too much trouble for free pallets to save 2inches of board.
    I have found the HF $12 air hammer works, can use a wedge to open up the boards, and then I made custom tool by cutting off wedge into flat end and drill shallow hole, and it pounds the nails right out, and use another smaller diameter pin and punch them all the way out like you showed.

    Just one thing, it's better to use a jigsaw instead of a skillsaw because sometimes pallet makers cheap out and put just one nail in the middle, when you cut with the circular saw the wood can pivot and bind the blade causing dangerous kickbacks, happened to me.

    • @murraymadness4674
      @murraymadness4674 3 роки тому

      I would add that a bandsaw can cut both top and bottom at once too.

    From experience ripping things up... I've learned to lay nail boards with the nail points down. No one intentionally steps on a nail, but all it takes is a little stumble or inattention for a long, rusty nail to go into the bottom of your foot and maybe even out the top. Even if you're up to date on your tetanus shots, a nail in your foot can make your life miserable for a week or so until it heals. Cheers

    Does banging on the slats affect the project? Seems like hammering on the slats to remove them from the runners would put a bunch of hammer indents in the workpiece.

    Have you ever ran into pallets that are very brittle? I have a stack right now that I was just going to give away because they seem to just crack/shatter if I am not prying in the perfect spot around the nail

    • @JackmanWorks
      @JackmanWorks  7 років тому

      Definitely! That's when the wood is super dried out. It's the main reason I just cut the ends of the slats off so I only need to play with the center nails and the center of the slats tend to crack less

    I am looking to find a nail punch just like the one you use to punch the nails back through in the video. But all I can find are the solid type that are intended to sink in finishing nails. Where did you get the one you have that stands up bent nails and drives the nail out of the wood by containing it in the cylinder?

    After watching this video I have a question. How do you estimate the number of pallets you need to do a project? You stated that your workbenches took 20 pallets, how did you arrive at that solution. Asking for a friend.

    • @JackmanWorks
