This is a piece composed for percussion and orchestra by the Chinese percussionist Minxiong Li. Soaring
Dragons and Leaping Tigers is a Chinese phrase with a meaning of energetic, lively movement, and perhaps
a connotation of taking initiative and creating change. Fittingly, the music is full of passionate melodies and
traditional rhythms. A large percussion section solo fills the middle part of the piece as the different Chinese
percussion instruments take the spotlight. In the final section, the melodic and percussive instruments join as
one, creating a joyous, unified spirit all together.
