Great Video! Helped me a lot. Now I got the Thunder Browns on my Harley Benton. All the best from the Black Forest (South West Germany). Love what you're doing. Cheers Peter
Thanks Peter and so glad you like the Thunderbrowns. They are definitely my favourite polyurethane string. Warm wishes to the Black Forest from Wales. 😊
I liked this video very much. Thanks for sharing it and for the explanation.
📌 I really hope you found this video helpful, not my favourite job but definitely worth learning how to change your own strings. If you want to see more about bass ukulele strings, please see the videos below:

Thank you! The video is very helpful.
You are welcome, Thanks 😊
Thunderbrowns for the win! And great demo, Rach.
Thanks Jules and I am soooooo glad it all worked out well because the Thunderbrowns are LUSH on the Kala 🥰
Super helpful video watched it about 10 times before I changed the strings on my Harley Benton electro/acoustic. I've put on some Thunderblacks that I got from Southern Ukulele Store.
Couple of things mainly particular to my Uke.
1. The HB doesn't have the handy access hole on the back of the Uke - I had to cut one of the old strings (to get a nice straight bit of string) - poke the old string from the top down into the soundhole - tape the end of the old string to the new string and pull the new string through.
2, I found that tuning the string to one semitone (and a bit) below the not of the string (e.g. Eflat/D not E) when pulling the string onto the tuner gave me more success than being dead on the note..
The blacks sound great particularly the E and A string which are much louder. All the strings sit better in the standard nut.
Thanks again😀
Thanks for the great comment. Yes, I always make sure there is access to the strings from the back as it is a real pain to change strings so very glad to hear you managed it! Also, agree about the tuning a little lower when restrings, I will try this next time as I think I’d prefer just a little bit more string around the tuner. Very glad to have helped. 😊
installing some daddario nyltech soon, this should help! thanks!
Thanks so much for this video, Rachel. I've been thinking of changing out the factory-installed Thunderblacks on my Kala Bamboo U-Bass with a set of Silver Rumblers. I watched the video created by Kala and it looks like they used three different methods to secure the four strings to the tuning pegs. I wondered if that was really necessary and, as your video shows, one method works just fine. It sounds like you really like the Thunderbrowns. I'll make it a point to give them a try somewhere down the line.
So glad to be helping. I’ve got a set of Silver Rumblers here, just haven’t decided what to try them on but yes, you are right, I LOVE the Thunderbrowns. 👍
The easy way to remember which ways the strings go, is that if you wind the A and D strings to the outside they will foul on the E and G tuners. Always to the inside IOW.
You are brave Rachel. When I wanted different strings on my ubass I took it to the music store and paid to have it done 🤣
Brave or stupid or both.
Considering I’ve been changing strings on instruments for over 30 years why the rubber strings on a bass ukulele give me so much stress. It does get easier each time - honest!! 😂
@@UkuleleWales I will stay cowardly for the bass, I do ukes. 😁
😊
Rachel when I restrung my bass uke I stuck a needle in the end which made it easier to thread through ( I have cataracts so find some things difficult!) Also try using a Capo to control the strings ( works for me!) 🤘😃👌
That's a great idea and tip, Thanks Bill. Yes, I’ve heard of the capo trick, may have to try that to. 👍
@@UkuleleWales I'm going to re-string my ancient EKO 12 string so that'll be fun 🤣🤣🤣🤘
Thinkin' of doing this with Flat wounds on the same u-Bass model. Any thoughts? Cautions?
Thanks very much. Great channel. Have learned alot from you.
Personally I would be very careful. I tend to think it’s fine if the instrument came with Flat wounds or even Round wounds like the Journeyman. I maybe being overly cautious but I have read stories of swapping to metal strings causing damage on some instrument. Best check, either check out some of the bass guitar forums as they often talk about bass ukes or check out the U-Bass Freaks group on Facebook, maybe someone has done it successfully. 👍
I'm having a heckuva time tuning my Caramel Electric/ bass uke. I can barely tell which way I'm turning the pegs and I'm wondering if there's some thing that gets loose in there to prevent it from turning?
Is it rubber strings? Try lifting the string off the nut sometimes this works. Also, have a look at the tuning pegs, is the spare string over the bottom of the tuning head?
is this process the same if i go from roundwound strings to rubber strings?
In theory, yes it should be but you may have to alter the nut a little as the rubber stings will probably be thicker. 👍
Hi there can I point you towards Terence Blacker's song "young girl with a Ukulele" I think you'll like it I'm subscribed to his channel hee writes sweet sounding songs but they have a side to them if you like Jake Thackeray you'll like Terence though he's not so dark!👍😲
I do like the playing and style……… the words were interesting! 😉
Surely you thread thru the bridge to come out the hole, tie the knot then pull it back from bridge to nut
The strings are already tied with a small plastic washer so you need to go in through the bottom. That would be possible the strings aren’t already tied. 👍
Can anyone tell me what the advantage of tying the string to the pegs rather than simply winding them on.
never wind the strings on the ukulele bass, when I first got my Ortega ukubass I was not knowing how to tie the strings on the tuning keys. So I used put the strings on the tuning pegs and started to rotate the tuning keys. And then the tuning keys couldn't take all the string on it and the tuning pegs broke completely off the headstock. Now I stay in India, and these ukulele bass tuning pegs are not available in India at all and if I order it from US it's going to cost me triple the price. So never wind them how we normally do it for guitar. These aquilla strings are thick and the need to be pulled up to a certain limit till it reaches its maximum tension and then put and tie them around the tuning keys
Sorry to hear you had problems, Thanks for the warning.
As mentioned, if you just wind the whole string on the peg, there will often be too much string and it can damage the machine head or end up over the bottom of the tuning peg and you'll be unable to tune any more.
You seem to have perfect pitch. I do not. Is there any reason why I cannot use the Kala's built-in tuner while pulling the strings taut.
Yes, you can use the built in tuner, I just forget when I was making the video!! I don’t have perfect pitch though, I was using other basses as a reference but I can tune “by ear” if I’ve just heard the note. 👍
I changed the “rubber bands” on my u- bass for nickel flatwounds, which we’re hard to find, but Kala do make them and they are a costly £65…. Worth every penny, I can’t leave it alone now😂😂 I think roundwounds are about £40.
I know lots of players prefer the flatwounds, I will try them at some point on an EA Kala but know what you mean, I’ve been constantly using my Kala since I put the ThunderBrowns on it.
Are those ok to put on an original U Bass with no bar in the neck?
Thanks so much for this video. I needed it for my new set of Thunderbrowns as I've never actually changed the strings on my Kala U-Bass. Love the new strings and I gave you a mention in my review video 😀

I am so glad to have helped and Thank You kindly for the shout out, very much appreciated. Awesome to hear you love the strings too, they are definitely my favourite “rubber” strings. Cool vids BTW. 😎
@@UkuleleWales I love all your videos on Uke basses and short scale basses. They seem to be becoming a lot more popular lately as well. Keep up the good work!
