I really started to think that I can believe that I'm beautiful, like those kissing guys, no matter what the others say. At almost 60 years old, I have re-discovered this song and video. I'm a dude. A 'masculine' man. But over the course of my life, I have known each one of the characters depicted in this video. At times, I knew several people struggling with their place, and acceptance in this world. Now getting to be an "old" man - I feel so much more empathy. I've lived in a squalid room downtown. I have sisters that went through body-image issues. Punk friends who explained their reasons, and their individuality. Girls who had a tough time with bullying. I relate mostly with the skinny guy discovering weights. Not so much on the trans-thing, but I have become to have much more empathy. Fortunately I've stayed in touch with friends of varying life-experience. Nobody needs to record another song for me - as I'm main-stream. Lots of songs speak to me. But watching this reminds me of a time when so many "acceptance" issues were so much harder. Remember: You are beautiful, no matter what they say.
Sometimes i think people don't give credit for the originality on CA's work, she had the balls to put an explicit, unapologetic gay kiss in this video and portrayed people who are hardly noticed/bullied in such a positive way. Even though she started out as a manufactured artist she has an "independent thinking" and doesn't always go with the flow, like working with Sia and Mark Ronson before they were everywhere. I'm a guitarist and doctor. When this came out, it made everyone pay attention. I also perform, and had to learn it for a gig with a female singer doing Christina's part when it was new. She nailed it, and I realized how important it was to the alternative community afterward. The chord arrangement and production is truly BEAUTIFUL. Great tune in a changing time back then... I also lost patients and friends of both sexes to AIDS. It needs to be covered again by someone. Maybe Beyoncé or Rhianna. In these times? We need something Beautiful. Keep it alive.
As someone who struggles with low self-esteem and insecurities, this song is inspirational and uplifting and really helps me learn how to embrace my insecurities and to not care so much about how I look. I am teaching English in South Korea. I looked up the sign language (American) for this song and had my kids learn it. I wanted them to be able to say and SHOW that they are beautiful. There are so many plastic surgery industries in this country constantly telling my girls they aren't enough. This song, I hope, taught them that I think they are the most beautiful people I've met. I hope, to this day, they remember this.
This song came out when I was 19 and I had just come out. I feel guilty admitting that to this day, this song makes me cry. I wasn't really bullied or made fun of but I'm just happy that there's a voice out there for people who aren't as lucky as I happened to be. That giving love can be far more rewarding than being self-centered and crude. One thing I would like to point out is that older people like myself grew up not seeing people french kissing like the two guys in the video. When I was young that was considered inappropriate behavior and some people still do. I know I don't particularly like seeing two people french kiss. That's so sexual it should be kept to private. Now in Katy Perry's Firework, the two guys kissing there are actually kind of cute. It was an expression of love and not two people making out. So please when you get frustrated understand how my generation and the ones before me were raised to find that behavior intolerable. People actually could get arrested for that when I was a kid for public indecency. I'm glad you spoke out though, because your generation has a right to your more open beliefs. I remembered the case that happened with me. I had a classmate that was gay, and all boys in the class(except me) used to hate him and insulte. I always supported him, because I felt bad for him. I was swearing with them all the time. Now he is leaving in Norway with his husband and two little children. I'm so proud of him. I thought this was a lovely song when it first came out but it’s only since my cousin passed away from anorexia that’s it’s become really meaningful to me . She was 22 and suffered with it for so long , she was self loathing to the extreme and it really made no difference how much we tried to tell her that she was beautiful she was lost to it long before she died - in a bubble all of her own . My beautiful daughter used to get bullied in school. Everyday before and after I would play this song dropping her off and picking her up. This is the only song she remembers listening to in the car on the way. She was a little girl then, a beautiful young woman today....
Respect to you I too was bullied but have been in a twenty year depression but since covid I have contemplated suicide twice but have woken from this depression and started doing art and it's helped in such a positive way I hope all is good with you and your daughter
I'll use American terminology here. My partner was bullied every single day, and her mother wouldn't let her just change elementary schools. Once she reached secondary education, she went to a different school (since the prior school didn't have a secondary education). Once she was able to do that, the bullying stopped and she made friends. The implications of her elementary schooling will stay with her for the rest of my partner's life, along with other events (also massively affects the quality of their education). So hopefully that was an option given to your daughter.

Times need to change and we all need to stand together as one, think about how weak us human beings look when we attack and kill others just for not being the same. Humanity is dumb to try to separate from others just because they are different, nothing will be able to change everyone, so people need to get on with their lives and start accepting everyone for who they are. Everyone who disagrees needs to get rid of the mind controlling abilities that history has given us, putting things in our heads telling us what's right and wrong, if you hate on others then you are not fully in control of your own mind. I was around back then. There was barely any activism from celebrities, mainstream media didn't talk about it, and internet usage was scarce, so to have an influential celebrity on TV tackling all these issues in a 4 minute music video was groundbreaking! She did a more successful outreach than all of the organizations combined. She definitely saved lives!

Back in the 90's and early 2000's gays were in everything everywhere, they were in massive amounts of music vids, TV shows, movies, commercials, etc. The difference was back then its was just about acceptance and normalization, not totally over the top celebration and glorification to the point of near worship and religion where its literally their entire identity as a human being. I remember being a kid, around 9 years old, when this came out and saw this on my tv. English isn’t my first language so I didn’t quite understand all of the lyrics back then, but I saw those two men kiss and it warmed my heart. Now, I’m an adult gay male who’s grateful for Christina’s self-love anthem because it got me through a tough and lonely time. Christina truly is a legend. She helped us, the lgbt community, with her voice when it wasn’t ‘a popular thing’ to do. I’m also grateful for the progress the world is making in terms of lgbt rights. There’s still a long way to go but I know for a fact that the future is going to be better. It must be.

The visual depiction of a normalized homosexual couple who werent used as a prop or over sexualized said to the world, that hey, we are beautiful and not just a part of a show - we are people with beautiful stories. I dont feel that Madonna did that in her videos. She obviously represented gay figures but I’m not sure how central their visibility was. It lifted me up when I was young and insecure, and now I’ve grown and have a child who’s beginning to hate their body and I’m feeling all those feelings for them. At almost 60 years old, I have re-discovered this song and video. I'm a dude. A 'masculine' man. But over the course of my life, I have known each one of the characters depicted in this video. At times, I knew several people struggling with their place, and acceptance in this world. Now getting to be an "old" man - I feel so much more empathy. I've lived in a squalid room downtown. I have sisters that went through body-image issues. Punk friends who explained their reasons, and their individuality. Girls who had a tough time with bullying. I relate mostly with the skinny guy discovering weights. Not so much on the trans-thing, but I have become to have much more empathy. Fortunately I've stayed in touch with friends of varying life-experience. Nobody needs to record another song for me - as I'm main-stream. Lots of songs speak to me. But watching this reminds me of a time when so many "acceptance" issues were so much harder. Remember: You are beautiful, no matter what they say.

One thing I would like to point out is that older people like myself grew up not seeing people french kissing like the two guys in the video. When I was young that was considered inappropriate behavior and some people still do. I know I don't particularly like seeing two people french kiss. That's so sexual it should be kept to private. Now in Katy Perry's Firework, the two guys kissing there are actually kind of cute. It was an expression of love and not two people making out. So please when you get frustrated understand how my generation and the ones before me were raised to find that behavior intolerable. People actually could get arrested for that when I was a kid for public indecency.

I'll use American terminology here. My partner was bullied every single day, and her mother wouldn't let her just change elementary schools.
Once she reached secondary education, she went to a different school (since the prior school didn't have a secondary education). Once she was able to do that, the bullying stopped and she made friends. The implications of her elementary schooling will stay with her for the rest of my partner's life, along with other events (also massively affects the quality of their education).
So hopefully that was an option given to your daughter.

Oh good grief these "issues" were talked about all the time in the 1990's and early 2000s. Being gay or different was not a new thing in 2002.
I was around back then. There was barely any activism from celebrities, mainstream media didn't talk about it, and internet usage was scarce, so to have an influential celebrity on TV tackling all these issues in a 4 minute music video was groundbreaking! She did a more successful outreach than all of the organizations combined. She definitely saved lives!

Back in the 90's and early 2000's gays were in everything everywhere, they were in massive amounts of music vids, TV shows, movies, commercials, etc. The difference was back then its was just about acceptance and normalization, not totally over the top celebration and glorification to the point of near worship and religion where its literally their entire identity as a human being.

I remember being a kid, around 9 years old, when this came out and saw this on my tv. English isn’t my first language so I didn’t quite understand all of the lyrics back then, but I saw those two men kiss and it warmed my heart. Now, I’m an adult gay male who’s grateful for Christina’s self-love anthem because it got me through a tough and lonely time.
Christina truly is a legend. She helped us, the lgbt community, with her voice when it wasn’t ‘a popular thing’ to do.

While I will say that Madonna has always been a gay rights activists, Christina normalized the affection of two gay men in her video, Beautiful, which aired on MTV, VH1, online etc to worldwide audiences beginning in December 2002. The visual depiction of a normalized homosexual couple who werent used as a prop or over sexualized said to the world, that hey, we are beautiful and not just a part of a show - we are people with beautiful stories. I dont feel that Madonna did that in her videos. She obviously represented gay figures but I’m not sure how central their visibility was. Whereas Christina put it in full center of her video along with other issues.

It lifted me up when I was young and insecure, and now I’ve grown and have a child who’s beginning to hate their body and I’m feeling all those feelings for them. The producer knew iimmeadiately that it was the right take and despite CA begging for months on end, the producer knew enough not to let CA re-record and ruin the vocal trying to make the vocal perfect
