I took a 3 hour guided tour of Jerash which is located just north of Amman. It takes about 25 minutes by car to get there. I did not take a group tour but those options are available.
The city itself is much larger than you first imagine. The history is rich between the transfer of power from for example Greek to Roman, though the history extends before those influences.
The entrance fee was worth it and the guided tour cost me about 50 JD paid directly to the guide upon the end of the tour.
The guide was great! His name is Nader, educated in Canada and well spoken, knowledgeable and a pleasant person to be around. His phone number 00962797795656. Please check the time in Jordan before calling him.
Prepare to do a lot of walking, you can easily do 4-5 miles in the entire complex or just visit the hippodrome, the Roman center and the temple. It's up to you.
The weather in December was about 70F all day in the sun. Bring water and sunblock, sunglasses and hat.
You can also visit the ruins of a Templar castle 15 minutes away if you like that is situated on a big hill. More on that in a future video.

Two things of note: your guide is extremely knowledgeable, he could be a university professor. Two, those bagpipes startled me. Lol. I wasn't expecting to hear bagpipes in this part of the world. I was pouring myself a glass of water and started drinking when the bagpipes blasted. I literally spit up water from being startled to hear them. I never knew about Jerash before, and now, thanks to you and your excellent guide, I can add its existence to my knowledge. Thank you so much.

Well I am a Jordanian coming from Jerash City, where you were is almost 5 minutes a way from my House! I am a medical doctor in Germany now, left Jordan 15 years ago. I miss Jarash a lot! What is astonishing is that, only Jerash itself has more preserved roman Ruins than Italy itself (where the roman empire came from). Respect to that legendary Guide of yours, who speaks an accentless English with a perfect detailed Knowledge mixed with humbleness and a strong voice! You chose the right person on the right time and place! Hope you enjoyed it sir. Thanks for visiting our country mate

[accoustics] It's cuz the room is a hard surfaced circle and you are standing at the center. It's better inside a sphere, stepping in with height, than an theater, stepping away with height, causing dwell. The effect is fun.
No, the audience does not benefit from the whispering arch effect, nor do you benefit in terms of hearing them. Yes, nice clear lines and hard surfaces and a maximum number of people a minimum distance from the speaker are all benefits to hearing, but these are unrelated to the joys of ellipses.

It would be good to add a map at the beginning to show the location of Jerash. Interesting to know how deep this area was buried before it was excavated.

Look it up on Google Earth! No one may know how much is buried. Even these ancient ruins may have been built on top of more ancient ruins. Excavating the site would destroy what remains.

Very nice videos, and knowledgeable guide. Compared to other greek/roman cities as the ones you can find in Turkey (Ephesus), do you think is better preserved? Thanks for making and sharing this video.

Thanks for watching! I haven’t seen many ancient sites in Turkey except for Cappadocia but I think in terms of preservation, they did a very good job at Jerash. It’s a very large complex.

Wrong .. Hadrian did visit Jerash.
The Emperor Hadrian visited Jerash in AD 129-130. The triumphal arch (or Arch of Hadrian) was built to celebrate his visit. A remarkable Latin inscription records a religious dedication set up by members of the imperial mounted bodyguard “wintering” there.

We look back and marvel, never questioning why we marvel. If we did, we might wonder why it was taken from us.
