Hello Yusuf. I am a new ham'er who enjoys a lot of outdoors stuff with the family (tent camping, RVing, hiking, road trips, etc). I got into the QRP side of Ham radio and been loving it. I saw your video and wanted to give you a shout out to say thanks for your expertise, energy, and contributions to the hobby! Also, I am so inspired by your portable set up. I am going to pick up a Chameleon Antenna this weekend. Stay safe, stay prepared, and keep rocking! 73 from Los Angeles!
Setting up for field ops I found 5 and even 10 watts often can not reach WinLink/JS8Call/VARAC for emcomm. That made the FT857d a great choice for me (30 watts almost always works).
You are a man after my own heart. I have gone a little different with my FT-857D. I bought rails, bag, and battery box from PortableZero and a CHA Emcomm III Portable antenna. Pushing 59 I plan on having something resembling a proper seat and table, and bringing the radio and LDG z11 proii tuner out of the bag. I have NBEMS (flmsg, fldigi), JS8Call, and WSJT-X FT-8 running with my Signalink USB, Digirig Mobile, and Windows 10 Dell Laptop. For the time being Winlink is mocking me, but testing the Cha Emcomm iii Portable on ssb phone today made realize what I thought was a software issue may be RFI and I need to try adding a few ferrite beads. When tuning with 20W or more power the radio was locking in Tx. You have better HF antennas, but I am trying to get it all in one small bag. I will probably get the Packtenna 20/40 EFHW for inside the bag and Cha Emcomm iii Portable hanging on the bag. One of my primary requirements is 80m NVIS. Currently I am using the Ultimax 80m-10m EFHW installed in an inverted-L, which works well when the transformer is near the ground, earthgrounded, and choked at the feedpoint. It is too big for the bag. If the Cha Emcomm iii Portable does not meet expectations I will likely try MyAntennas EFHW as it is very efficient and about the size of the Cha Emcomm iii Portable. Keep up the good work. If you get interested in EFHW antennas, I suggest looking at some of Steve Ellington's videos. He does actual testing in various configurations. The configuration I use is about 3db better than typical configurations. I suspect the Cha Emcomm iii Portable will not provide required performance on 80m until I have 4 or more counterpoises. Again, keep up the good work and happy radio prepping. My main prep is for after the big hurricane blows in FL. N4VEP
I used to run with the EmComm III !! But doing SOTA made me Switch things up a Bit. Also have you taken a look at the EFHW Sparkplug antenna?? It comes in 50-100 watts! @@metroatlantahamradio334 I have seen some interesting videos of the sparkplug antenna. It hasn't made my short list yet. The Emcomm iii wasn't on my short list until until my brother sent me a $200 Amazon gift card. I had narrowed down to the Packtenna 20/40 EFHW and MyAntennas 80m-10m EFHW. NVIS regional communications of 50mi-500mi after a hurricane is my primary concern. That means 80m & 40m NVIS. 80m is a bit more reliable for NVIS, but more noisy. Otherwise my favorite bands are 40m & 17m for ragchewing & DX. Which has me thinking of building a 40m or 20m 3/8wave doublet. Doublets are fun antennas and very efficient with excellent freq agility, but they do like being high. Endfeds are best for portable ops in my opinion due to ease of deployment. Most portable verticals are not too efficient and/or have narrow Q. How many radials were you running on your Emcom iii? I have the 25ft and a 1/4 wave set 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m & 10m from Super Antenna. I may get a second set of radials. Adding one set doesn't do much to SWR. A bit higher on some bands and lower on others. Both antenna wires are nice but I think I am liking the Super Antenna wire better than Chameleon. The kevlar Chameleon wire sheath seems a bit soft, so I don't dare drag it over an oak or pinetree. Hint, hint... Chameleon has cute plastic mounting rings. I can't wait for part 2. Are you running a bluetooth CAT for one side of your Digirig Mobile? That is on my short list to try.

I just got the Winlink tnc so I want to setup APRS and digital for my FT-891. KI4SBU
Thank you for the video and information. I would like some more information about this. The music makes it harder to hear and understand what you are saying. My tablet doesn't have the best audio? Sometimes your voice was low. Can you give information on how to put that all together
Great video! I built an almost identical pack a while back, got the idea from TheTechPrepper. I like the idea of keeping a TNC on it like you have, might have to throw my TNC3 on it. DigiRig is on my list to get! 73 man, enjoy!
Good video. Nice folding cellphone, or tablet? The tnc is doing your aprs reporting, and you’re viewing it on the tablet’s connection via cellular connection? I’m a little rusty on this. Been out of circulation for 5 years. You could do the spotting by cell on an aprs app, but that’s not domesday? W3ENG
The tnc is connected via Bluetooth to the phone. I don't usually have cellular service on the Appalachian Trail, But from that Elevation I can hit FM Igates on 144.3900 easy (especially with 20watts). From Igate I can spot, text, update position, and email 📧. So through Bluetooth the phone manages APRS user interface. No cellular service needed. Just phone To Radio,-Radio to antenna.
A good example is, If you and I had an android or an iPhone with an APRs application, A TNC , and a radio we could easily communicate direct messages between one another miles apart easily ( depending on a few factors) but over all we could digitally communicate without any data services. Peer to peer VHF text messages ( UHF or Whatever). Plus that MOBILINKD-TNC3 does packet for Winlink.
Approximately 10lbs with Battery and Protective Frame. Also the Digirig has Yaesu Mini Din connections to 3.5mm jacks that connects to the sound card. The TNC3 has the same type. The Digirig uses both rear data and Cat connections at the rear of the Unit.
Do you have more videos on that TNC? I've never found a good pack for the 857D andcwas just going to make it my mobile rig. Any experience with the Comet HFJ-350M? 73 Frank KB1QZH

Great video! I built an almost identical pack a while back, got the idea from TheTechPrepper. I like the idea of keeping a TNC on it like you have, might have to throw my TNC3 on it. DigiRig is on my list to get! 73 man, enjoy!
That's a great idea! 73 !!
I got the idea from TechPrepper also. Now I support his channel in appreciation.
What bag did you get from Amazon?
Nice video

Wow nice rig looks and sounds great. 73
Thank you for the video - can you tell me the name of the radio mount with those connections at the front p,ease?
Armoloq TPA !! Check em out !
I didn't catch that tactical Antenna and would love to see how you are powering the unit please sir.

Thanks
No problem
Awesome , can you tell us or show us how the Digirig is hooked to the TNC3 ? Also weight?
Approximately 10lbs with Battery and Protective Frame.
Also the Digirig has Yaesu Mini Din connections to 3.5mm jacks that connects to the sound card. The TNC3 has the same type. The Digirig uses both rear data and Cat connections at the rear of the Unit.
wow thats cool ! what length was this ABBREE antenna? and any cheaper options than the chameleon? Cheers from Sweden ( soon with a call sign )
I haven't found anything comparable to the CHA .
Abree is about 2'

Hopefully the link below will help you! I'm not familiar with that antenna.
I don't but I'll make a few!
Nice pack. Great video.
How did the abree holdup?
It's not so bad. It's always worked.
I'm a noob, and getting ready to build a Manpack/Gobox, and was wondering if the heatsink would be effected by the air tight enclosure, and not properly cool the unit?
That is correct man. You'll need to get air circulation as much as you can.
Wow that is so cool!!
What is the antenna adapter you are using for the folding antenna?
SMA Male to Like BNC
Nice Picture of Thrawn!!
Nice setup about time for that 1 year review copy?
