Thanks a bunch for all these videos. I've been learning to drive stick properly for a while now without the assistance of a driving school and I've saved around 1500-2000€ this way. Only a few kinks to iron out now before I'm satisified. Been working on rev matching as well.
A lot of people always talk about downshifting to a stop but 99% of the time, it’s just not possible because of limited time to do it before reaching the stop sign. Especially if there’s traffic and they’re not moving at the speed you need to downshift at. Years ago, I use to just clutch in and brake to every stop sign and stop light. I didn’t realize then that I was cutting off the engine brake and using brake pads only. Nobody taught me manual. I learned how in an empty mall parking lot in the middle of the night. I pretty much just learned how not to stall it and that’s it. Fast forward, I had 3 manual cars over the years and pretty much did the same thing over and over. Clutch in and brake. Even at 60mph, clutch in and brake all the way down to the stop sign. It’s all I knew. I just got my 4th manual after not having one for over 12 years. I went straight to UA-cam because I was excited to have a manual again and just wanted to watch shifting videos. Needless to say, I now let off the gas, let the engine brake kick in a bit and brake until it’s time to either clutch, downshift, rev match, and continue or clutch, stop, back to 1st.
Not sure if it was mentioned but it's extremely important in my opinion to break first and then clutch, specially in situations where you need to do a hard stop. If you're used to clutching first it wouldn't be instinctive to break quickly.
I love watching your videos! You show how slow to release the clutch which is so important so you don’t lurch the car. I slow down and put my car in neutral when I am heading to a light or stop sign not a big down shifter. I’ve been driving my manual since July steadily. I still like to look at manual videos to see if I can learn any tips. Very helpful!
The best way is to brake first, then put the clutch in just before the car is ready to stall out. This occurs usually around 750-1000 rpm. This way you can continue using engine braking and reduce the load on your brakes, and while saving on gas. Also in some jurisdictions it is illegal to coast with your foot pressing the clutch (you are effectively in neutral). Also certain components in manual transmission have a mean lifetime before repair which is proportional to the amount of time your foot is pressing the clutch. Therefore the goal is to be pressing the clutch as least as possible. Downshifiting for sole intent of stopping should not be done by beginners or commercial cars. It should only be done for heavy trucks and race cars. Even then it might be illegal to downshift in certain jurisdictions to down shift due to noise pollution laws. Also downshifting puts strain on your transmittion parts. Brakes are a lot cheaper than transmission parts.
@@Mystxry think of downshifting as trying to slow yourself down while running downhill. You want to slow down so you start putting massive amounts of energy into your legs to fight gravity and to make sure you don't trip and fall under your own speed. Breaks are a wear item, the transmission isn't supposed to be, cheaper to replace brake pads than your clutch and transmission because you wanna downshift for no real purpose.
@@Mystxry Downshifting wears out the clutch plates if you don't execute it 100% perfectly (using perfect rev-matching). Since it is so difficult to perfect it, it is advisable to not use the technique. Unless you're an expert race car driver or heavy truck driver, I wouldn't do it. For pushing in the clutch while coasting: Every second your clutch is engaged, you are putting strain on the throw-out bearing.

This helped me when i was learning: Press the clutch when going slower than 800RPM’s depending on the car. at 1000 is a safer bet tho, when you are comming to a stop its better to keep the clutch pedal out as long as possible to not be coasting. Shift from first to second at like 2,5k rpm at roads and as early as you please on streets. 2nd to 3rd and so on at like 2 thousand. Mabye slightly later at highways, uphill etc. and downshifting at like 1500 to 1200 rpms.
Trying to teach myself manual just wondering, isn't it bad to ride the clutch when coming to a stop? Is it ok to do or is it better to brake first and then clutch in when the rpm gets to like 1.5k
This video is more informative than many of the ones I have on my Manual Driving Playlist. Everyone I came across is saying you have to Rev Match, and Heel toe. I spent hrs looking at videos on how they do both techniques, and though I understood some of it, I didn't get the point of doing all that, or whether is necessary. Most ppl replied back saying if you're going 80-100mphs you would definitely need to know these things... But why on earth would I drive that fast? Can anyone enlighten me on whether it is needed to know those things, or is things I should pick up as a learn to drive first? I also saw them say those rev matching and heel toeing saves the car? Can't I just apply the brake and down shift as you were normally doing without the car jerking a bit?
Thank you for making this kind of videos. I am buying BRZ hopefully will get it this year, Will be my first manual car This tips are very helpful! Do you have a video going in a reverse? Lets say your in a parking lot and trying to get on the road. Would be cool if I see footwork
@@whoischris28 say you downshift all the way to first and come to a complete stop with the beake can you just realese the brake and get going again or have to depress the clutch?
people like to downshift coming to a stop for audible exhaust/engine noise and engine braking. I do it in my Mustang because it sounds great and makes me happy, even though I know it's more wear than using brake pads. Having said that, it's an automatic paddle shift manual mode that rev matches, so that should mean there is less clutch wear than user-error in a manual using heel-toe.
Downshifting for stop signs to me is based on how fast you're going and for better engine braking. If you're in 5th gear on a 55mph road going 55mph and a stop sign is coming up, I would brake until I reach a certain speed, downshift to say 3rd gear, brake, clutch in and stop.
The reason for downshifting before a stop is to minimize the braking distance until a stop, but if that's the case it's only needed on the main road driving with a speed like 70 km/h, totally unnecessary at a local road.
I thought it was better for the transmission to put it in N then just use your break but what should I do like at a red light but then I end up not having to stop all the way idk if that makes sense but those kinds of situations stress me out
I’m no expert i’m just learning myself, but what i’ve been told is when you see a red light and you go into N and braking but it turns green before you stop at all, always match your speed with your gear. Example, if you slow down to like 10-20mph shift it down to 2nd gear, if you 25-35 drop it to 3rd and so on. If you below 9mph of course first.
I got a question for anybody that knows about manual cars because my question is..when I got to a stop sign or if I’m gonna go to a red traffic light in 6th gear can I really press the break and then go to 1st gear with no problem by that I mean will it hurt my car?
In sixth gear you're going pretty fast so press the break down slowly and as your rpms go down you can downshift. Think about it, do you really think it's good to press down on the break at 70 mph?
Great video! I just have a question? When you say"clutch up and give a little gas" how much up on the clutch are you going before the give a little gas? to the biting point? or you know how much you letting off the clutch by the way your personal car feels and how smooth it should feel?

@@thephantomzoneboxing i blip the throttle and put it in second or if im under 10mph i put it in first on my 03 wrx
@@whoischris28 say you downshift all the way to first and come to a complete stop with the beake can you just realese the brake and get going again or have to depress the clutch?
Best vid so far!!!
people like to downshift coming to a stop for audible exhaust/engine noise and engine braking. I do it in my Mustang because it sounds great and makes me happy, even though I know it's more wear than using brake pads. Having said that, it's an automatic paddle shift manual mode that rev matches, so that should mean there is less clutch wear than user-error in a manual using heel-toe.
On a flat road, i usually shift gear before reaching 2000rpm, for better fuel consumption.
Downshifting for stop signs to me is based on how fast you're going and for better engine braking. If you're in 5th gear on a 55mph road going 55mph and a stop sign is coming up, I would brake until I reach a certain speed, downshift to say 3rd gear, brake, clutch in and stop.
this is an awesome setup
This was the most helpful video. Thank you.
I learned a lot of this video. Thank you!
Great video like. Always, thanks for the effort and time.
Thank you. Must keep studying it!
The reason for downshifting before a stop is to minimize the braking distance until a stop, but if that's the case it's only needed on the main road driving with a speed like 70 km/h, totally unnecessary at a local road.
Excellent guide, thank you very much..
give a littybit a gasssss
great video man
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
This video is extremely helpful! Can you do a video on expressway driving?
Thank you so much !! So simple and helpful ❤
Approaching a stop sign i just throw it into neutral a few feet away but for beginners it's best to clutch it then brake.
I forgot about that but sure lots of people do that as well.
Thanks this video is really helpful.
This is video is great very helpful. Do u have other video on shifting
Best video to learn 👍 great job
Do you have to switch it to first at every stop? What happens if you just leave it in like 2nd or 3rd gear while stopped
I drive stick almost every day but still watches this for entertainment. Haha
Thanks for this video just started to learn how to drive manual. :)
She makes it look so easy but when i go to do it its like the transmission is about to drop out of my car. Smh. Why is this so difficult?
Awesome vid very helpful
isn’t he tecnically riding the clutch though? i brake and put mine into neutral and then stop
So the reason the car isn't stalling is because you have your foot on the clutch clutch in correct?
Yep
Great video! I just have a question? When you say"clutch up and give a little gas" how much up on the clutch are you going before the give a little gas? to the biting point? or you know how much you letting off the clutch by the way your personal car feels and how smooth it should feel?
NewYork85 it’s a biting point with the clutch you’ll know if you drive one
