  • A most curious of timbers unsure of its own identity but one with a very complex response indeed. A truly magnificent tonewood, capable of producing a highly responsive guitar. Make sure to listen through headphones for the true tap tone experience.

Way cool stuff about Persimmon. I’ve learned a lot from these videos and yet there’s still so much mystery about all these beautiful woods which I love by the way.

American persimmon (d. virginiana) is dense and pretty hard, but its stiffness could be a bit better. I would use it for fingerboards for sure, as a local alternative. It takes a stain well. It's common where I live in the South. It was once the preferred wood for gold club "woods." It will have jet black streaks and knots, something like tulip poplar gets. If only we could figure out what chemical process makes wood black, we might be able to grow temperate zone ebony!

Hi Tom, congratulations on what you are doing, really very interesting,
Could you talk about Pernambuco and maybe make some videos also on the woods of the soundboard?
    Thank you

Looks a bit like some Madagascar Rosewood I have, but straighter grain.

MB looks striking... nice coloration and the boomy-base has real presence. It reminds me of some cocobolo I tap-toned recently - deep but not quite as ringy [not sure if thats is a word :)]. Would this tonewood be close to Bog Oak in tonal quality? Cheers Tom - enjoying the series :) K.

Great video's it's good to listen to the tonewoods, beautiful woods used. It's first time I've checked out your guitars after another UA-cam reccomend you. What kind of price would the custom koa cost. Do you do jumbo guitars.

A recent convert and loving your videos. What’s the situation regarding visiting you, playing some of your guitars and discussing a commission, Tom?
