very, very cool, Sam! Looking forward to the video regarding vibrato! I recently ordered my 7-string bass viol and i`ve been binge watching all your videos in antecipation!!! Thank you so much for making such absolutely invaluable content!! Cheers from Brazil!
Thank you for all the clear explanations and playing, you’re very good! I notice that you change your 4th finger movement from the bass knuckle to more of a ‘vibrato’ trill as it accelerates, do you find this to be more consistent? Thanks Sam👍🏽
Toddzilla hi! Yes i think in order to create a faster trill, you have to combine more deliberate movements with a vibrato-like movement. It depends both on the speed of the trill you want and also on the amount of time you have to execute it.
@@samstadlen2960 Hi Sam, thank you for responding! The 4th finger trill is something I’ve been working to get, especially when combined with a 3rd finger doublestop like we see so much in Marais. It would be great to see you do a video on that! Thanks again
I don't know if you can answer my question... But, I've been playing Bass and Guitar for about 15 years, but as a hobbie, it is not my job... I'm a Cook, and because of that, I hurt my hand and now i have some limitations in my right hand... It does'nt gets in the way of playing Bass or Guitar that much... But I recently started to play the Cello... And the way we hold the bow on the Cello hurts so much, because of my injury. So, I saw some videos showing the Bow Techinique from the Viola da Gamba, and I tried to use it, with my Cello Bow... And it is much more confortable... Do you know if i can play the Cello properly using that kind of Bow Techinique? Cause my professor said I should not invest much effort on it, but I found it to be really confortable for me.
Hi Daniel, so sorry to hear about your injury. The good news is that cellists throughout the 17th & 18th Centuries used gamba-style, underhand bow holds and I have used the gamba hold on cello myself. However, if you're playing modern (as opposed to baroque) cello with a modern bow, you might find it difficult to fit your fingers through the hair because the gap between hair and stick is rather narrow on modern bows. Teachers of modern cello will find the gamba technique bizarre and silly (even though it is not) but any decent baroque cellist should accept it. If you're playing modern cello, I'd recommend you try baroque instead. The shape of a baroque bow should make the under-hand hold much easier for you. The strings of a baroque cello are also under less tension which makes the whole instrument much easier (and more enjoyable, IMO) to play. Happy to help further if I can. You can contact me through my website, if you like.
Vraiment merci pour toutes ces cadences et petites notes c'est un vrai privilège de vous écouter!
Merci bien pour votre commentaire!
I study traverso baroque flute and I like a lot to learn how other baroque musicians perform. It is always useful. Thanks for sharing.
Such a treat to not only describe the technique but also going into so much detail and giving the historical background. Thank you!
Grand Merci! c'est une grande aide dans le détail du "comment s'y prendre". Et je dis cela pour toute vos vidéos. Encore merci!
Merci! Je suis heureux que vous l'ayez trouvez utile!
This video is the most interesting so far.
Thank you for sharing.
Artego thanks so much!
Very interesting and informative. Great idea to separate the into several videos.
Molto chiaro , grazie .
Very, very helpful! Would love to hear your thoughts about trilling to an open string vs shifting to a higher position.

Thanks João!
Boismortier's suites op 31 are written in French style. Is it a matter of the edition or did Boismortier himself change between the writings?
Gracias por la traducción al castellano....
Hotteterre system of ornamentation is the best for me.

Que pena que no hay versión en español... parece interesante...
This “la petite” morceau sounds a lot like “porqouy doux rossignol” song.

Your viol is beautiful! Who made it?
drummer58 thank you, Drummer! It was made by Jane Julier - a fantastic UK luthier.
@@samstadlen2960 Fabulous! Thank you! I’ve been playing bass viol about four months now and I’m absolutely captivated!
