My first job was at Brookfield Zoo back in 1996 when I was a sophomore in high school. I worked at the Safari Stop Restaurant, which was the largest restaurant at the zoo with the two terraces on each side and water fountains in front. I ended up working there for two years and created lifelong friends while there. Our whole "crew" were a bunch of goof-offs. Definitely some of the funnest times I've ever had.
When I was a toddler my mom got a season pass and during her summer break from teaching she would take me on the Metra from Naperville nearly every day. Some of my earliest memories are at the Brookfield zoo.
I really enjoyed this video. Used to live in Illinois myself but moved out 14 years ago. Reminds me of home , beautiful Brookfield zoo ,awesome video , thank you

Love your videos, easily the best zoo walkthroughs out there. On the False water cobras, they aren't actually cobras. Cobras are front-fanged while the false water cobras have fangs in the back of the mouth. They impersonate cobras though by spreading a hood. While cobras can raise about half of their bodies off the ground however, false water cobras can't. So when they spread their hoods, they stay completely laying on the ground.
I was there 2 days ago with my dad, and for some reason, half the animals weren't even there. Maybe it was the 90-degree heat and they had to go indoors. No big cats, no rhinos, no Monkey House Asia and Africa. You can see the South America section of the Monkey House, because Asia and Africa were under maintenance. On the bright side, we got to see the new Ice Age Giants exhibit.
The animals have the option to be outside ot stay indoors where it's usually cooler. I always recommend going back later to see if the animals are outside.
Aye bro I really loved this video, in 2019 I went in July 14 you went a few days ahead of me with animals doing better activity lol but I recommend you going back next year because I went this year and last year to see new animals. They got two new lions since the ones in the video passed away 😢 they also got a new silverback gorilla, a new hippo, a new polar bear, two rescued orphans from Alaska, plus we just got koalas for the first time in history. They renovated the dolphins habitat, now they’re focusing on the new outside access for the apes that should be done next year, it’s under construction right now! I have many of my hats hanging on the walls of my bedroom. I'm hoping to visit Pennsylvania later this tear. The Pittsburgh Zoo will definitely be a part of that.
I think the amount of stuff this zoo has accomplished being free is great. I do feel that some of the exhibits are small/bare, the indoor ones especially. Tropic World is a good example. It’s very old and feels very depressing almost. There’s nothing but bare floor and fake trees. Feels unnatural.
I think a good example of what can be different is Toronto Zoo, and how they are building an outdoor exhibit for their Orangutans. Obviously it’s harder at Brookfield, but it’s just something to consider. These animals shouldn’t be kept inside with bare trees and floors. The giant anteater probably hasn’t even seen grass.
