    I just want to say how thankful I am somebody finallymade a video showing what is wrong with my early model 318. I tried everything I could think of but I still never got rid of it. I grew up mowing with this tractor and it has tremendous sentimental value so now I can give an honest attempt it reviving it. Thank you so much!

      Glad it was helpful. Contact Boomer at Boomers Onan if you need the parts (can't remember if I said that in the video). You will have to call to order the parts.

    I wonder if this is my issue, mine kinda surging for a while and then will over rev and the machine will speed up while mowing and then a second or two later slow back down to full throttle.

    Looking forward to the video series on this repair. I replaced the plastic flyball spacer with a steel one in my '87 P218G engine and I don't think it was too difficult of a project. Really took my time with it because it was my first time working on an Onan engine. Also changed the front and rear main seals, dipstick tube seal, and exhaust manifold gaskets while I had it apart, and did a lot of degreasing.

    I have a similar issue my 318 just dosent put much power to the ground like it has no get up but revs pretty high could by flyball or transaxle or not enough fluid but it never really mowed up hill or down hill to wear it out any suggestions

    Oh, I've been patiently waiting for this series. I hope you have the time and cover the decarbonization process also. I would also like to tackle that, being that the engine will already be out of the tractor. It having 1000 hours on It, it probably could use it. Thanks again, Mark C.

    Good thing i noticed it on mine when I was mowing about 34 minutes or the engine would explode. I will check the plastic flyball spacers. and if that's the problem I will have to get metal flyball spacers

    pretty sure this is whats happening to my john deere 420 with the p220g. its around 1900 hours so i guess its probably getting time for an overhaul.

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  5 років тому

      If it is only the flyball spacer you really don't need to overhaul it. You really only need to replace the flyball spacer. Give BoomersOnan a call... Boomer is a great guy with lots of Onan knowledge and he has the parts you need!

      Well the tractor also uses a little oil and makes a ticking noise when running witch makes me worry it’s going to blow up soon. I just pulled the heads off and cleaned everything up and adjusted the valves. How many hours can one of these engines last if it had decent maintenance?

    Is this Flyball Spacer problem a, it will happen or mite happen to the 318? What is the percentage of this happening? Was looking at buying one but after this video I'm not sure now.

      The flyball spacer issue is somewhat rare but common enough to be a known issue on the 1986-early 1991 318’s. No idea on the percent and the fix is not a huge deal and a good opportunity to clean the frame of the machine. Any 20+ year old garden tractor will require maintenance of some type. The older they get the more involved the maintenance will be. I wouldn’t let it deter you, just something to be aware of.

      Im not sure if my issue is related to this but you might have a idea. My p218 will run good for 10minutes then it will start misfiring and eventually clear up. Then it will increase rpm drastically but only when the pto is engage. If i kick the pto off it will go back to a normal rpm but surge some and then if i kick the pto on it will scream some rpms but run smooth. Any ideas?

    Please do not engaged the mower at full throttle! Really hard on the clutch! 1/3 throttle is stated in the manual. Having said that, I still appreciate the video, thanks!

    good info. i remember seeing videos in past of rebuilding b43. iknow mine needs rebuilt. once it warms up. u can hear a knocking in it. but i dont have tools to do it. nore really know what id be doing. i wanna do it myself. but yeah its one them things. i found companies whom do them and give warrenty but hell i can buy a used (so called rebuilt 318) around here for about same price. really a rock and a hard place there

    Not saying it's a problem. It seems like a very high percentage of users would just keep the machine on high straddle it is appropriate when mowing. Yet some people can't figure out how to get their large dick engaged because the clutch he needs to break the inertia. The more frustrating problem would be to stop the machine creeping up when in the park neutral position. Seems to being over oil problem. It hasn't done it in a while.

  • @andrewmullin3625

    Hmmm. My 1985 316 will rev up past 4000 rpm as soon as soon I move the throttle lever to wide open even if the engine is cold and by cold I mean as soon as the engine is started and I know it goes over 4000 rpm because I used my small engine tachometer. But here's where it gets weird. If I engage the deck even when the tractor is in neutral like yours in the video the engine only goes to 3100 rpm at full throttle so basically what I'm trying to ask is WHAT'S GOING ON with this thing because if anyone has an answer it would definitely be you. I've looked all over the Internet with no luck yet.

      have a b43g with steel flyball spacer that does exactly what your talking about. took it apart everything seems fine. must have missed something easy!

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60 6 років тому +1

      I think I know what the problem might be Andrew...never crossed my mind before. This might also be the same for you ShnitzlHaus. I bet the engine was apart in the past and whoever put it back together did not line up the timing pin on the governor shaft with the hole on the governor cup. This would cause the governor to work incorrectly.

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus 6 років тому +1

      Yes so I tore it down to do exactly as you stated. I made sure to line it up but can't be certain I got it right, difficult to do! just put it in the three o clock position and hoped for the best with the engine tilted slightly down towards the pin. going to oil it up and check how it works now. that was the only thing that logically made sense. hope to test it soon and let you know.

      MichaelTJD60 you might be on to something because the engine looks like it has been messed with before not only that but the guy I got it from seemed to be a backyard mechanic if you get my drift lol
