As a Japanese resident, I want to emphasize this:
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
"When in Japan, do as the Japanese do."
It's simple, and most people will understand it.
Coming to Japan with ill intentions is completely unacceptable. Instances like these cause significant harm not only to Japanese people but also to sensible tourists and foreign residents living in Japan. If you can't understand it, please don't visit Japan.

@@Hashiriya714 There's a big difference though. The Chinese are not doing it because they think they are racially superior. A lot of ignorant people from Western nations have a tendency to take Asians lightly because we are not confrontational and try to avoid any type of altercations due to our culture. However, Asians need to change. Because this new generation of Westerners don't respect polite, accommodating, pleasant personas we will only get stepped on and further disrespected. I understand how you feel. I also don't intend to speak negatively about Americans. Every country has both good and not-so-good people. However, one trend that has been increasingly noticeable among Americans recently is that in situations where we Japanese typically need to be quiet, they engage in conversations, and their voices are often two to three times louder compared to Japanese people. They don't seem to mind this much, and in fact, when they come to Japan, some tend to assert their American identity loudly.

  • @joeyp1927

The United States is relatively new, so Americans lack a traditional culture. Therefore, they don't have a deep appreciation for what it means to have time-honored traditions and customs that stretch back hundreds or thousands of years. This is why many of them really do not understand what it means to disrespect someone else's culture.

Especially Asian Americans, most have only immigrated in the past 50 years and identify much more closely with their mother culture than the American one.

So, I JUST came back from Japan, and I had visited before 6 years ago. I have always enjoyed many aspects of Japanese culture beyond the stereotypical Anime, sushi and Samurai, but yes I like those things too. However, Japan is not the same as it was 6 years ago, and this new breed of tourist have ruined Japan. I UNDERSTAND I AM A TOURIST, A FOREIGNER AND AMERICAN! However, I try my best to be a polite and respectful tourist, know the language, and enjoy Japanese culture (with respect). It’s so important to learn a little bit of the language and the cultural nuances that display politeness and respect. Something as simple as knowing to be quiet on the train and wear your backpack or bag in the front goes so far. I saw American tourists on the train yelling on their phones and to their friend that missed the train, and they swore and were incredibly loud. People forget this is a culture and people’s home, and not an amusement park.
Also, travel bloggers have ruined the good travel destinations and experiences by letting everyone know about them. People who have no interest in Japan are visiting just because people are talking about Japan, and it’s a trendy destination now. So, as a result everyone (rude or polite) now visits Japan and other places. Unfortunately now my interest in Japan has faded, and I do not wish to return to Tokyo at least not for a very long time. I’m incredibly disappointed with my most recent trip to Japan, and at the same time I’m also incredibly grateful I got to see Japan before it was overran by tourists. Long and short of this is that if something is good keep your mouth shut about it.

Long Post😬😁I just wish people were more self aware and empathetic. I think if people were more like that then you would act accordingly. You might get caught up in the excitement of seeing a geisha because you're human, but empathy would bring you back to reality in knowing that you're looking at a human first and being aware that they feel uncomfortable. Empathy would also lead you to want to learn even just a little about the culture you're about to experience because you're about to visit another person's home (their country). Like some basic words and phrases that locals will know. Sometimes I think people in western society (specifically unfortunately some from the US) think it's an obligation for people in another country to know english. I get that it's a give and take so that tourism can thrive so they learn english in order to make foreigners comfortable, but if you think about it they really shouldn't have to in the grand scheme of things because they are in their home and we're visiting. We can be a little more gracious in that regard and at least learn a couple of words or learn their norms. Do as the Romans do is the saying right? That's what I'm trying to do before visiting South Korea and Japan because I want to visit to learn about how we live differently culturally and to also stumble upon our coincidental similarities because I'm sure there are plenty because we're all human. I've already seen some similarities between my Haitian background and Asian culture when it comes to respecting elders, similar family dynamics/gratitude for ancestors, and love languages being centered around acts of service and food versus actually saying I love you among other things and I'm sure I will find out more. I don't want to treat visiting their home like an amusement park or like a museum tourist attraction if you know what I mean. I think that was the energy of the woman shown. It was like the woman was seeing an attraction in a museum not a human who just happens to be walking down the street dressed in traditional garments in her everyday life. Asking her if she minded being recorded would have helped like showing the phone and pointing to it and asking is it ok? (If there was a language barrier) And if she said no I'm sure there would have been someone else down the line who would not have mind being recorded and actually enjoyed it.
Also with the point of saying that black people or just foreigners in general have pictures taken of them or getting stared at when they're in places like Japan is true. I've had friends who have traveled to Japan and South Korea and they've said that they've gotten stares. One of them is over 6ft and he got a lot of stares obviously because of his height but he and my other friends have said that it was rarely out of racism or superiority it was genuine curiosity. Other content creators I watch that are black and also have traveled to and lived in asian countries have also said the same. Rarely out of malice. I'm not in a place like Cali or NY with a huge Asian tourist demographic (I'm in south florida) so I wouldn't be able to comment on if they act similar to the woman that was shown, but even if they did like you mentioned I don't think it's out of malice and I think at some point if you stare back or look uncomfortable they would probably stop. I don't think this woman had malice either she just wasn't aware enough to see through her excitement that the woman was actually uncomfortable. It could be lack of empathy/manners or it could be entitlement but I think as US citizens and people of this world we need to brush up on both of them.

There are also unwritten/unspoken rules that Japanese society do. What I'm been told from a Japanese friend from the countryside of Kyushu told me this... For example: You should not be in a loud or extroverted behavior (behavior from USA, and etc), because Japanese locals are quiet unless if your behavior is good and not loud and etc, then he/she would expect to talk to you or ask questions. And two saying hi to strangers like how people do in the US is not acceptable in Japan.

As a Japanese person, personally, I feel that approaching strangers in conversation is not just unexpected but also considered rude. If someone casually approaches you in Shinjuku or Shibuya with leaflets, they are likely soliciting. However, if you appear polite and genuinely seem lost, many Japanese people would be willing to help. In such a situation, if you don't speak Japanese, using a translation app is recommended.

I remember when I visited Pearl Harbor and the first thing we had to do was see a short film abouit the tragedy of Pearl Harbor. Believe me, no one was joking after that. So I think that something like this could be set up - a sort of tourist information section, heck, maybe on the plane over to the site like a customs thing, to have people understand that these are people living their lives in a traditional way and not public exhibits like a living museum for you to take pictures and Lord forbid - touch. You can be considered a barbarian. Can you imagine if tourists coming to your country and start taking pictures of you like you are an oddity? Which you probably would be to their eyes. And all you are doing is trying to get to work, or shop, etc. People should study the culture of the land they intend to visit so as not to offend. That woman must be mortified!!! Not a good way to get hits.

If the country has honorifics or if they take respecting elders seriously. City vs countryside living. Heck even basic words or phrases to know. This guide helped him take it to the edge and yet keep him out of serious trouble. ....Johnny Somali didn't have that and didn't know his limits.
Japan has its own pranksters (just look at Japanese t.v.), its own "jackasses". I think that's who he hired as a guide. This person, he figured, would know how far he could "take it". Logan Paul believed he could do enough to impress the kids at home, yet stay out of serious trouble. When he did get into trouble (with the footage in the "suicide forest"), it wasn't with Japanese, it was with his fellow Americans (who, for some reason, didn't care that much when he engaged in similar antics in Italy).
