In this first instalment, we explain what alters are, how alters can be different from each other, and WHY alters are different from each other, specifically in terms of gender! Disclaimer I forgot to mention in editing - the trauma I reference is just ONE reason why SOME Alters differ from the bodies designated birth sex, but these types of alters are very common and YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS TO HAVE AN ALTER OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. "

    Listening to her talking about how you can live a healthy and happy life with all that happened in someones childhood almost made me cry right now. I don't have DID, but other disorders that resulted out of childhood trauma (well it piles up and never stops I guess, but that's when it started) and I feel like I never can achieve a healthy and happy life... But hearing that others have made it happen with maybe simular or even worse situations... It's weird to hear that but I think it feels like a good thing to hear I think

    Got recommended your "alters drawing themselves" video and am loving your channel. I've had the pleasure of knowing multiple DID systems over the last couple of years and have a huge intriguemnet in this disorder. One of my hobbies is studying psychology on my own, and when I saw Split it piqued my interest and I started researching. Then I met a system and they allowed me to ask many questions to gain a better understanding. Thank you for coming out to the world in this manner and sharing and informing. I hope one day everyone can be as informed as possible about DID

    Thank you for re-posting these videos. I started working at a school a while ago, and I actually told a teenager and her/their fosterparents about your channel after they behaved as totally different persons a couple of times, and other teachers started to tell me that that child was "impossible", "it insisted on beeing called different names or else it wouldn't listen etc...".
    I also told the teachers and the school nurse to watch your channel. I do not know if the child really have alters, or if it is something else. But I thought that it could not hurt.
    The last I heard was that she/them are waiting for an appointment to check it out.

    I love that you guys redid this video. Is there a way that we could get a "headcount" I don't know how else to word that...To see who is still there and still active. I know sometimes alters will go dormant and with all the merging that occurred it might be helpful to get an update on the alters/names that are there right now? Just a thought. I've missed you all making new videos. (Ps I'm so sorry if I sounded rude, it was not my intent I just couldn't think of another way of wording it, Jade don't kill me please.)

    I use this to explain to dear folks on what DID is as an intro. We still cry when we see it because of the reality though. DID as an adult saved me again from even worse things than childhood if that's believable including war, caputre and torture. I'm alive becuse of it. Just putting the pieces back are hard. Thank you so so so very much.

    Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences. With the unfortunate reality of younger people pretending to have disorders they don't fully understand, it's extremely refreshing to see a system sharing their experiences and teaching people what the disorder actually is and how it can happen. You're incredibly strong.

When we were first diagnosed our host was in complete denial of the diagnosis it'self saying "No, that's not true of me, I'm not that!" Glad to know that denial is... part of it all.

    I love this video! I think. I had to rewind parts of it so many times. I would squirrel off somewhere and miss everything.
    The part about the voices hit hard. We have been diagnosed with schizoaffective bipolar type. I tell them about the voices that they are not audible. They would brush it off.
    This starts me thinking I’m making this all up. That I’m thinking up some crazy scheme. To what? Take over the world with a mental disorder? Then I really think we’re nuts. That part helped too. Thank you.

    I've been struggling to go back and forth in and out of denial and acceptance. My therapist and my imaginary friends from childhood use the terms alter and system, and sometimes there are times where I call them alters and I call myself the host and collectively us as a system and then other times I have "my childhood imaginary friends that aren't so imaginary" and other times I'm afraid I'm in a delusion.
    When you said this isn't something you wanted because it came from trauma and because it was an unsafe and or a chaotic attachment. The pain I felt when those words came out of your mouth, was just like it pierced through everything. I feel immense amounts of guilt right now because I honestly wish this never happened to me but the thing is, I know it's a trauma response and that I should be grateful that it did happen because it was a survival mechanism.
    All I know is that I just want to speak to my therapist for clarity but not every experience is the same and I hate the unknown so much.

    I use to think I had osdd1b, but In truth I have (possibly) dpdr where at times I can feel not real/very unconnected to myself and to cope with this my brain created people that I “was” when I had these episodes of depersonalisation, i discussed it with someone online and they thought “oh you have osdd” so I believed that and went by that when I truly didn’t have it, but even after finally breaking free from that belief I still feel connected to these people my bRain created and when I think about them I still feel like a part of me died it’s like a friend dying it still hurts. I miss you vilbur I miss you ghost and ghast I miss everyone else.

    I don't mean to be disrespectful or triggering in anyway, but could you speak a little about sexuality? what happens to alters having sex? could you be in the middle of something an dissociate to a male alter who is uncomfortable? how about a little one? how does the system handle attraction sexual preference or relationships?

    • @belalaloca
      @belalaloca 2 роки тому +9

      Nina was the sexual protector who handled most sexual experiences it seemed, but now that she integrated with Chloe I don't know. I think Nin has said that she is still the sexual protector so she would take care of that role. Also, as of this recording, they had a partner system where multiple alters were in relationships with alters in that system. Unfortunately they broke up a while ago so I don't think any of them are currently in any relationships. I am not an expert in their lives, however, so take my words with a grain of salt.

    • @amyfu2047
      @amyfu2047 Рік тому +2

      No. Any system whose host or perhaps an adult alter who is in a relationship would typically take measures to make sure there would be no switching during any intimate time. Protectors and others also make sure that doesn’t happen.
      What’s it like when you’re having intimate time with your partner? A system is no different, except that there could be multiple relationships if your significant other is also a system. People with DID are not a freak show.
      Sorry this question made me angry.

    I actually have a question if you get to it. Can a host, that is unaware of their DID at the time, remember some parts of trauma or carry some of those memories from right before the trauma to have that feeling that something bad had happened during childhood? or is that usually not the case and the host is unaware of ANY trauma experienced in childhood? even the moments leading up? Thank you so much for all that you do for this community!

    you do an INCREDIBLE job of explaining things, and so admirable that you talk openly about your struggles too. i have been really looking into this disorder, i dont know, i just find it fascinating... i dont mean that in a dergoative way please dont mistake me- i just mean that the way our brains work is fascinating, and how this is a way of protecting someone. i have so many questions though. i also dont want to trigger anything for any of you. i hope nobody minds me askig, but i was a little confused when you mentioned that some alters can be abusers or not get on with other alters. im a little confused as to why this would happen if alters are created to protect someone?

    • @MoonPack01985
      @MoonPack01985 2 роки тому

      Alters can have different ideas on how to keep themselves safe or keep everything protected, such as one may think that hurting others in the brain will help them front more because they think they know what they are doing better, obviously there are many other answers.

    Can the alters talk to each other? Like can one be “presenting” themselves and can others just barge in?

Research and experiments shows that although repeated trauma is by far the most common reason, it can be developed in other ways, such as late development or inability to connect socially, especially to caretakers.

    Losing the flow of consciousness when switching egoes must be extremely EXTREMELY painful. Because this is not hypnosis, right? If I hold my Teddy Bear, smell, cuddle and look at it all at once, I am hypnotised by my Teddy. I can make my Teddy talk. It's a defence mecanism. I feel safe with my Teddy. No memory loss happened, I was still fully conscious. But when you move from one conscious to the other, that's not just hypnosis. You wake up in sheer panic into somebody else's body. You don't recognize your image. Complete alienation. It's what dr.ug abusers would endure in a psychotic break. I am not me. I am the table. I can't fathom the pit of depression one individual must be in to recreate naturally the effect of strong psychoactive chemistry such as MDMA. That implies there should be a chemical solution to prevent dissociation.

    Yes its fun to find the silver lining in this hurricane that is called a systems life. But you are still living 24/ 7 in this hurricane. Sometimes the hurricane can be the absolute worst the world have ever seen or it can be the most mild but the bottom line is having DID is like trying to live as normal of a life as possible in a hurricane. It is far from being fun. The things we find fun are the things we use to keep ourselves safe. Its like having a colorful umbrella in that hurricane.

    Can new alters be created in adulthood? See, before I knew about this, I created "personas" in adult life for work. Some of my personas enjoy working much more than others, others simply refuse to work at all and just want to sleep and play. But I am conscious when I need to create one. Like, recently I created Chrona so that she can take care of time planning and organizing. I don't know if this is just my brain playing a game that helps it cope with unpleasant tasks in life or if it's truly the dissorder, or if it's a spectrum and I'm on the mild side. I do have repeated childhood trauma, non of it physical but I had a horrible childhood and no one around me even realized what they were doing to me. I go to therapy and I've told my therapist about these personas and she hasn't shown any surprise or said anything. She even asked me recently if I was still using the personas. She simply accepted it as something I do and it's fine.

      So I'm not a professional, but some people do make up people in their heads for things like that but usually it's normal. If you want to look into it more unfortunately DID and OSDD (otherwise specified dissociative disorder) is extremely under researched. There isn't much on it. But if you do want to really look into it, there is some *very* vague articles on something called monoconscious. Let me put a copy and paste definition of it- "Monoconscious refers to a system with only one consciousness[1]. Members do not have an individual consciousness, but instead share the collective consciousness. Monoconscious systems may experience changes in fronting as a smooth transition rather than a sudden switch."
      I believe I have that too, but because it is so under researched it isn't recognized medically. (yet?) I hope this helps! :)

    TRIGGER WARNING!
    I am attempting to write a story with the main character suffering from DID. They were kidnapped and they experienced almost daily sexual trauma from ages 6-16, but they had no contact with the outside world during this time. I am wondering what kind of alters would form in this situation, since this person has no one to look up to and cannot make a comparison between them and someone who's stronger because they don't know anyone but their abuser. Can anyone help me?

    • @CB-dy1he

      Did they have many memories from just before the incident? What were their favorite characters, movies or tv shows at the time before the incident? What about memories of their parents and other family members? They would most likely turn to the memories of their old life for comfort. Even a child as young as 6 would have known many family members, friends and fictional characters from media.
      Also, it is possible that some influence of their abuser may live on in them as parts of an alter. Or if their abuser talked about people in their life with your character, etc.
      Another thing to note is that Alters are not always definite. Your character may have a sudden abundance of new ones appearing or morphing with old ones after surviving and reintegrating with the world again.
      Good luck with your story and research into your writing!

      Disclaimer: I'm not a system but a fellow writer. I'm working on and off on my DID fanfic (which is honestly loosely based on the original people that I'm writing about) since 2+ years now and this and other DID channels on here have really helped with making everything more realistic and helped me to understand how systems and different alters "work", especially regarding intergration (amnesia barriers going down), fusion (two or more alters coming together to "form" one alter) and splits.
      I'd imagine that in this case there might be an introject of the abuser or a persecutor in general, likely a protector (I haven't heard yet of any systems who don't have one or someone who has an alter that behaves very similar to a protector), definitely at least one if not multiple trauma holders that likely are littles and/or middles (for example: different types/forms of trauma can lead to the "creation" of another alter or splits) and one or more hosts (because over the years some systems change hosts to adapt to new environments/situations, for example: the transition from primary school to secondary school. In your case the transition from an abusive environment into a stable and healthy environment could warrant the need for a new host because no one would be equipped to deal with the new daily life, regular meal times, school, therapy, family/caretakers wanting to get to know them, etc. I imagine it would be a real shock, overwhelming and lead to an identity crisis for a system to go from one extreme to another).
      There also could be alters that are "inspired" by things from their pre-abuse life, like their parents/family/caregivers, pets/animals (maybe they went to the zoo with their parents a few times and have seen tigers and their brain takes that to "create" an alter), nature (for example: trees, leaves, snow, rivers, stones), media they were exposed to as a young child (for example: a fictive or alter inspired by a children's book (for example: a story that had a ninja in it) or a film like "Winnie-the-Pooh" or a fairy tale that was read to them),...
      Or something that they have seen during a holiday trip (for example: a lighthouse because they went to the sea and were impressed by how tall it was, so their brain "creates" an object alter that's a lighthouse, which could be talking, walking, etc. or it can't do those things and is just there to front and take the abuse while other alters "get a break" from the abuse and those memories could be either kept by the alter or filed away somewhere by an alter, who's job it is to file certain memories away and maybe retrieve them later when the need for it arises or when it's safe to do so). There also could be a gatekeeper that manages who fronts or an internal self helper... or fragments who hold specific memories (Not all of them have to be "bad" memories. They could be happy memories.) or who have a specific task like showering or eating and that could be the only thing they do...
      Keep in mind, every single thing that a child is exposed to pre-abuse (and during the early stages of abuse before the amnesia barriers go up and even during the abuse) can be an "inspiration" when it comes to alters - and the human brain likely keeps more memories stored than we can actually retrieve and remember (at least without triggers, for example: the smell of Christmas cookies makes a lot of people remember things like baking with their mothers during the Christmas season).
      Also, if you want to keep your character's system "small" or make it deviate from the (perceived) "majority", remember that an alter can have more than just one role (for example: an alter who's a protector and gatekeeper or an alter who's a trauma holder and an internal self helper) and that littles don't have to act like typical children at the age they identify as (for example: a 5 year old little that can go responsibly grocery shopping like a teenager or adult or solve complex tasks like accountancy). Or if you want to make your character's system "bigger", remember that sub-systems or side-systems can exist and that alters can even develop DID themselves (which in my opinion could be an alter that split and their own alters are still very similar to them and other alters could be aware of the split and thus see the split off parts in the inner world with the appearance of the alter that split OR they see them as looking completely different).
      Here are some websites I used in the early stages of my research on DID that might be helpful (even just as a reminder because some types of alters are less common than others, for example: shapeshifters): did-research.org/did/alters/functions & traumadissociation.com/alters & www.beautyafterbruises.org/blog/didmyths
      I think it's okay to still allow yourself some creative freedom and write things the way you want them to be. You should have at the beginning a disclaimer that you don't have DID and that it's not a factual representation (or at least that the majority of DID cases won't look/present like this) but that you stayed as close to reality as you could regarding the plot/story line, etc.

      @@Larry_Stylinson This is incredibly helpful, I'm going to copy and save your comment in my document XD
      Thank you so much for taking the time to type all of that out and I'm sorry I didn't react to it sooner. I'll definitely take a look at the sites you've mentioned because I so want to make the system big and versatile (since the period of abuse is so long, I can't imagine all that trauma creating a small system).
      There is definitely going to be a persecutor who resembles what the character thinks the abuser looks like and there are going to be several littles who are trauma holders. I also want to create a few internal caregivers essentially who are there to take care of those trauma holders in the inner world. Furthermore, I think I do want to play around with the idea a sub-system or a secluded part of the system that isn't able to reach out to the rest for a long time.
      As for the appearences of the alters, I will look into the sites you sent but I like the idea of object alters and alters who resemble family members. I also want to dip into what this character's creative mind can come up with regarding 'If only I had/was ... then I would be stronger/would not have to deal with this' kind of thoughts to create protecters or trauma holders.
      I don't fully understand what you mean with "(which in my opinion could be an alter that split and their own alters are still very similar to them and other alters could be aware of the split and thus see the split off parts in the inner world with the appearance of the alter that split OR they see them as looking completely different)" this whole part basically. I know sub-systems or alters who themselves have developed DID are possible and I kind of understand how they work or could work but I don't understand your explanation of it. Would you mind elaborating?

    There are 3 parts of the brain Conscious|Subconscious|Unconscious, the Subconscious and Unconscious do not think. Only *you think, the brain doesn't say "oh no she shouldn't know this yet" the brain doesn't do that. When you are given information that is by your standards unbelievable you naturally process the information and rationalize, denial is a coping mechanism (one of many) just like DID and alters. However, alters are something created by *you (the Consciousness); in order to cope with the information because your brain wasn't developed enough to handle it and rationalize. Kind of like the delusions of a child the thing that makes them different is the fact that the brain reshaped itself on this notion, it can no longer cope it lost that function because of the trauma. And you the child are losing it, you look on to anything to bring you solace and content. You create the alter, but it is more of an imaginary friend -at least at this stage. After time you are coping with this delusion this notion of I'm safe I have *insert name*, your mind begins to adapt to this. Your brain doesn't think but it knows that this delusion gives you dopamine, you seem less sad and willing to live another day. The brain then monopolizes on this, your brain as I said reshapes and molds itself under this idea. At this stage, it is no longer a delusion because your brain now believes it as well. This "delusion" now has a tangible form of an alter, that is DID -it is you coping with information. Being able to live a somewhat normal life after all that trauma comes with a price, that payment Is the burden of alters the creation of the Conscious mind to see another day. I am aware most people here are against this, most of you probably despise me for this. However, I couldn't care less the truth must be spoken. I feel disgusted when people wallow under the veil of their own ignorance, claiming that their personality splintered off as if it were a shattered bowl. They look upon spiritual guidance and the art of pseudoscience to find comfort that what they believe in is real, and when they are given the truth they deny it coping with reality and the weight of my words by refusing to believe it. I would like to see the science that proves the theories of "your personality splintered off as if it were a shattered bowl." If I am given that then I will politely apologize and remove this message, and don't give me that "science has proven that brain activity is different when people switch" yeah it's the same thing for people who are depressed, that would be a poor argument to prove your case.

      That’s literally just not true. The subconscious and unconscious minds are always thinking, even when you’re asleep. If the conscious mind was the only thing that could think for you, then you wouldn’t be able to dream, you would have complete control of your emotions, etc. The subconscious and unconscious minds are the reason mental illness exists and is almost entirely uncontrollable.
