Mostly special trains will get goods locos only. They won't even cross 100 kmph. One time I went in special train from Chennai to Secunderabad. It took 13 hours that too via Guntur with very minimum stops.

I hv travelled 2 times from nagercoil to thiruvannamalai. Good patronage is to & from thiruvannamalai. Problem is that this train always runs 2 hrs late in both directions. Cleaning was done at nagercoil in proper way.

Each route has MPS for Locos too, the loco WAG9 HC has MPS of 90 in VM-TPJ section. WAG9 has 100, only WAP locos has 110 MPS
