Modulars are actually consistently quieter on quality modular's such as the c5, because you can get a tighter closure under the chin and around the neck than you can on a full-face helmet. As for safety, it may be technically correct to say a single unit is stronger than a split design, but when was the last time that you heard of a neotec II, sportmodular, or schuberth helmet split in half in an accident? I suspect, never. It sells the assumption that e.g. An OEM car's wheels aren't strong enough by default, just because they're not a forged design. You forgot to mention that it has inbuilt roll-off cable protection (not something afforded by any full-face), and that the internal sun visors height is adjustable. Good review of the big mac though 😀
Pretty much what i thought when i was watching the review. I actually love when i can open the helmet when going through some small town when traveling. Not my favorite guy from revzilla, not a professional also if he cant put aside the fact that he don't like flip up helmets.
The nice thing about a modular is that rolling into a shop or gasolinero for a bite or pee, you can keep the lid on your head without having the cops called on you. An open face modular is weird enough, walking around with most of your face covered, parents hide their kids from you. It also make going through checkpoints on base or paying tolls easier.
I have a full face helmet for long touring or rides but I picked up a modular helmet for city rides and day to day commuting. Makes it so convenient.
Biggest reason I went modular is it easier on my glasses. If I drop them well putting on a helmet I may not find them let alone damages. Plus I like the socializing and slow speed option of a 3/4 helmet.
This is great to hear as my first Schuberth was a C3, which I loved, but I never picked up a C4 because of so many complaints about it. The C3 was by far the most expensive helmet I had purchased at the time and it immediately showed me what that extra cash bought me.
Regarding the limited shell sizes - I'm pretty sure that was one of the big complaints with the C4 so it's a bit disappointing that they have continued with that.
6:05 I worked at a motorcycle gear shop in Germany for a while and most customers who were interested in the C series by Schuberth appreciated the comfort that Schuberth provides. In addition to that, modular helmets are very practical when it comes to wearing glasses. It is a lot easier to put on glasses wearing a modular helmet than a full face helmet. I personally don't like modular helmets either - because of the weight and overall noisiness. But for riders who wear glasses or like to continue wearing their helmets during short breaks its a good option. :)
You are exactly right about the glasses factor there. What a sad thing that the tester keeps repeating he had not bothered to learn the reasons for the existence of the helmet type he is testing.
@@albertjurcisin8944 Ha! I know the reasons modular helmets exist but their popularity still baffles me. Modular helmets are typically louder, heavier, not as safe, and physically larger compared to a traditional full-face lid. But yes, you can save maybe 15 seconds of time if you wear glasses, so there's that. I've also heard a few cases of riders who feel claustrophobic in full-face helmets and therefore a modular helmet is an alternative option that gets them into full-face coverage while still being able to open the lid up when those claustrophobic feelings come along. So yes, there are a few benefits to modular helmets. But I'd still say for the average rider, these benefits are negligible. Keep it pinned! - Brandon
@@RevZilla v0v I switched from a Bell to a Schuberth because the Bell was *insanely loud* ! I just had not noticed because my first motorcycle was also *insanely loud* . With the Schuberth I can now hear the engine/gearbox/tires/road conditions on my Africa Twin. Also, there are some eyeglasses that just cannot be donned through the visor hole of a conventional helmet. Finally, you can take a drink on a long ride without taking the entire helmet off.
@@RevZilla "I know the reasons modular helmets exist but their popularity still baffles me." - then you are not doing your job - which is evaluating the product from the perspective of a potential customer. I would never dare to review the latest jazz album from any of the genre icons. My: "I don´t get it. It does not sound like Metallica at all!" would be just an admittance of my ignorance.
Somehow this video does not deliver the quality I got accustomed to over the years under the RevZilla logo. This is just a pub talk. That´s all.
Ride safe.
@@albertjurcisin8944 Are you from the modular helmet council. It's a helmet that has a hinge - it is not science, but it is compromised engineering.
The helmet is great. It's definitely the quietest helmet I have owned and with some cheap £0.80 plugs on a string from screwfix it's as quiet as driving in my car. With the fairing on my bike I have even wondered if it's quieter than my car. The ventilation is great and I have never found the weight to be an issue so I agree with most of what you say. I found the the top vent can be difficult to operate though. You mention the integrated intercom. I bought into the idea. it's the major dissappointment of the helmet. I intend to revert back to my Cardo Packtalk asap. I plan a ride into Europe and definitely hope to have it swapped out for a Cardo before I go. The Sena sound is thin and tinny. The Cardo is rich and full bodied and noticeably so in normal speech such as a phone call and amazingly good in music playback thanks to the JBL speakers. The Sena is a bit like white noise in your ear and ruins the ride as far as I am concerned.
... and Packtalk is waterproof :) Not sure why Sena overlooked that on bike you may experience rain from time to time 😄
@@tomasz5274 I did not even think about that! I assumed.. Anyway.. I am pushing for a refund or upgrade
My store offered a full exchange to a Shoei neotec2 with Cardo edge. Result!!
I love my C3pro, the only downside to every Schuberth I have used is their ventilation, I consider all of their modulars a good winter, early spring, and late fall helmet in Virginia. Even on a naked bike there just isn’t enough ventilation for summer temps here, and that’s where my HJC RPHA 11 comes in. Still a big fan of Schuberth!
Helmets and noise are totally subject to personal fit . C5 and shark evo, and agv don’t fit whereas neotech does. Wind buffeting and noise is created in general by fairings and screens (I note you are on an unfaired bike so clean air rather than dirty air will generally be quieter). Be interested to know whether you tested the other lids on the same unfaired bike.
If you look at the data produced by Sharp motorcycle testing modular helmets can be as safe as the full face equivalents, there are even some less expensive modulars that get better ratings than some more expensive brands full face offerings.
I have the non-Pro C4 in legacy red and it’s a great, comfortable and very quiet helmet. As an alternative I bought a Neotec - it’s good, easier to take the pads out and clean, but I find it much noisier. The helmet also feels much bigger than the Schuberth, so I’m guessing back then Schuberth had more helmet sizes. The sound isn’t a big deal as I mostly wear ear plugs.
In the UK, gas station insist you remove your helmet when going in to pay, so the flexibility saves the hassle of taking your helmet off - just flip up the visor.
That's a good note, sir - thanks for sharing! I've experienced being asked to remove my helmet when entering a gas station too. But, sometimes it doesn't change anything here with opening the chin bar - some places still ask you to take the helmet off entirely. Seems to be a very "situational" circumstance. Keep it pinned! -Brandon
@@RevZilla you have to take the helmet off only to put a mask on.
I live in Japan where it is about a billion degrees outside most of the year. You really appreciate a modular when you have to spend some time stopped with helmet on, etc. Also, I can put it on and free my hands for other things and still see downward to connect my wearbag and make other adjustments.
I’m a bit gun shy after owning the C3 Pro and loving it, then with 2 other riding buddies we bought the C4 and associated coms right after it came out, that was a hugely disappointing and very expensive mistake, all three of us agreed that it didn’t fit as well, was much noisier and the com mic being in the brow was nice out of the way placement but performed poorly.
We all threw the C4’s on the shelf and went back to the C3 Pro’s after pulling the Carda com’s out in installing the Sena that’s made for the C3 Pro.
I’ll have to wait for some forum comments from some folks to decide whether to spend the money on the new C5.
As a side grip, not sure why Shuberth can’t commit to a com system, at least if the com from the C4 could be transferred to the C5, give us riders a small financial break.
I crashed with face down on C3 pro, chin bar held rock solid, yeah, I wouldn't worry about safety with Schubert modular. For my Asian head shape, it is the best fit compares to other brands. I owned Arai, SHoei, Sharks, Nolan before.
Wonder if they'll do a C5 Basic that doesn't have the integrated comms setup of the C5. Not fan of having to pay 50% of the RRP of the helmet again to use the speakers that are already part of it!
On the modular helmet front, I think at the bottom end of the market they are heavy and noisy like you say, but at the top end with Schuberth and Shoei you get helmets that have a tighter sealing neck roll than a fixed face, so in theory can be quieter. They do weigh more than most brands but the C3 was definitely lighter than most full face Arai helmets, so nothing untoward. Meanwhile the Nolan helmet I got when I first started riding weighs in at 1900g with Comms...
Dude!
Can you get a Husky 701 enduro or 501 enduro for one of these reviews!?!
I’m really considering the 701, appreciate your informative videos !!
Good review. I like modular for touring because it makes it much easier to socialize when you stop for gas, etc... Also better ventilation when going 25 mpg through small towns.
Yeah, I could certainly see that being beneficial - especially if you live in a very hot climate. I feel like I can simply lift the face shield on my full face lid and get the same benefits but having the chin bar out of the way will have a bit of an advantage to airflow at lower speeds. Cheers! -Brandon
Good review. But I'm very glad I went with AGVs C5.😎
BTW, I cannot believe that any internal flip-down visor provides optimal protection owning to the reduced impact material iin a crucial area. And I agree with your disdain of modulars in general.
PS: Would like to have seen a shot of the whole bike. Looks like a Street Scrambler?
Yes - Sharp testing show consistent weak spots for modulars in the temples - not sure if it's the visor or the modular hinge - or both.
Thanks for the positive feedback! AGV certainly makes some solid lids - great choice! And yeah, internal sun visors are a whole different topic - don't get me started, ha! Cheers! -Brandon
I feel the premium opening helmet are more quiet than full face helmet… This is because the neck roll and the rest of the internal padding closes more snug on the opening helmets, at least on my head.
Hopefully they use the C5 as a base for a E2
What happened to glemmy?
Hey, You’re riding on some of my favorite roads! Nice👍🏻
There's some good stuff out that way - certainly better than the pot-hole-filled streets of Philadelphia. Keep it pinned! -Brandon
Who would have thought that NEW JERSEY is so beautiful?
I'm one of those oddball guys that prefers a dark external visor and clear inside visor. Reason why is I do most of my riding in the day and if and when it gets dark outside I ride with my external visor up and my clear inside visor down. Sadly, Shuberth doesn't make a clear inside visor for the C5 (yet) so I'll have to carry a pair of clear safety glasses with me just in case.
the phone holder really likes bumpy road eh?, i was really worried on that lol
It does get a bit "violent" at times. I'm using the Quadlock phone mount paired with the anti-vibration mount so I don't ruin the camera on my iPhone (the vibrations can destroy it). I've used this mount on ADV bikes through a variety of terrains in the Mojave desert, which is almost as bad as the pot-hole-filled streets of Philadelphia, ha! This mount works incredibly well. I've used quite a few different brands over the years and Quadlock has been my favorite for quite a long time now - www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/quad-lock-motorcycle-handlebar-mount - Cheers! -Brandon
@@RevZilla thanks brandon!
I love my old C3....( time for an upgrade)
I'm considering replacing my Neotec 2 with one of these because (a) I find the sunshade controls on the Neotec fiddly to find when I am riding and the C5 control is easily found by touch just by following the bottom edge with your fingers (b) I like the 'visor memory' feature - a small but useful convenience (c) AROS and (d) the 22-06 certification.
I might even spring for the Carbon version which chops about 240g off the weight of my Neotec.
What is that jacket? It looks nice AF
Which is more long oval, Schuberth C5 or Neotec? Keep trying AGV, Shoei on in store & im a true long oval, not intermediate so I have to keep buying cheaper LS2’s that fit
Icons are very very oval.
Comfort for distance riding, snacks and hydration while riding is their advantage.
How is the speaker sound quality? Can I simply pair my phone (spotify) via Bluetooth without purchasing a separate exterior controller?
If you choose to add the SC2 system to the helmet, the sound quality is solid. We still recommend wearing ear plugs to remove the drone of wind noise, but that will also help you hear the music better. Pairing to the SC2 system is relatively easy though, which will have you playing music in a matter of seconds.
everyone talks about a weak point in the chin bar but they pass the same safety standards, I don't get it.
nice review though, thanks
technical question Schuberth C5 sizing chart sucks. I am 58cm and L is too big. Can I buy the "oval head padding kit" for the size M and fit this to the L? the shell sizes are the same, but not sure if the inner fixed padding changes sizes or its just done with the changeable paddings. So I am asking can I change an L into M with a padding kit?

First it was Pizza, now a CheeseBurger!
Haha! Someone's been paying attention. I think a taco or perhaps some hotdogs are next on the list. Cheers! -Brandon
At this price point there's not a reason to avoid the AGV Sportmodular / SM Carbon, especially if you have a bigger head.
Agreed! The AGV Sportmodular is a solid lid. -Brandon
Is the Schuberth S3 full face a better option than this C5 ?
Hi, which intercom did you use?
The last thing I care about is the number of shell sizes. As an XL I have never seen an example where I would not get stuck sharing with the 2XL shell size
Arai Signet-X, Quantum-X, Corsair-X all have dedicated shells for XL. All three different internal fits depending on what ya need.
@@patrickmchugh8039 I'll consider them if I'm ever again in the market for a full face with no integrated comms for 20% more than a Shoei.
@@imadecoy. Ah, so you have heard of Arai before, was concerned bc your OP was: "As an XL I have NEVER seen an example where I would not get stuck sharing with the 2XL shell size". And yet, there Arai is.
@@patrickmchugh8039 Just because I've heard of the brand doesn't mean I've looked at every one of their products. You might imagine that I've only looked into helmets that drew my interest in some way. Some reading comprehension could really benefit you.

So wrong! To eat a cheese burgher while you ride man. Hahahahaa. But i love it. You are wrong about the usefullness of the modular design. Go into the grocery store and go through the checkout line with a full face, try yelling at your riding buddy with a full face helmet on. How about when a cop tell you to pull over and you say get lost to him with your full face helmet on? With a modular you’ll get a much different reaction.
I feel like the argument is more between the cost of safety having a pivoting chin bar instead of a solid state one and the 10 seconds it takes to take a helmet off to go into your store. I don't understand the talking with your riding buddy argument at all though, I never had someone unable to hear me or just to ask to say something a second time. Not really something that makes me want to sacrifice protection for the times it happens either. Just my 2 cents though
Very funny. Love it.
I wonder if that was a real Cobra you were behind

I was wondering that myself - there were actually two of them in front of me. Cheers! -Brandon
Ya two Cobra's, probably replicas two expensive not to be. I thought more would comment. Two Cobra's out for a spin. Are we not all bike/car people? 😂
The reason why emergency services love modular helmets is the fact we don’t have to take them off when people stop breathing.
Main reason I wear a modular is because I wear glasses
McDonald’s on the go…
It maybe a good helmet, but man it’s ugly.
I believe ed in c90adventures uses this helmet... saved him from cactuses blowing up ;)
Cacti 🌵 LOL
I was always under the impression modular helmets are quieter than full face helmets as they close tighter over the neck
Unfortunately, modular helmets are almost always heavier than full-face lids. Obviously, that's not always the case. If you're looking for a super lightweight modular, check out the AGV Sportmodular Helmet: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/agv-sportmodular-carbon-solid-helmet : it sure ain't the most economical option out there but man it does feel very light for this category. Cheers! -Brandon
@@RevZillaI am sorry I mistyped. I meant to say. Quieter. It was one of the main reasons I bought my c3 pro from you guys back in 2015. Are they not quieter on the road due to the neck closing tighter?
@@nordicjourneysI’m not revzilla but they 100% are. There’s a much tighter close than a regular full face.
First off, I am a long term Schuberth user. I wish to fine tune your C4 critique. I would apply the backwards step analogy from a C3 to only the standard C4. The mid cycle C4 Pro/C4 Pro Carbon is fantastic. Providing you have a Schuberth shaped head. With C5, Schuberth is adopting a different head shape (less long-oval and more rounded). On another criticism of the modular helmet... I am a motorcycle safety instructor, and need to have quick discussions with students while riding. Flip up to talk, back down to ride. Only possible with a modular. Motor Cops use them for the same reason...
Never considered a modular until I saw the genuine happiness you had when chowing the burger while riding. Having your cake and eating it too...modular, here I come! ;-)
Hahahaha! Very glad I could help you with your decision. While I'm clearly not a big fan of modular helmets and generally stear fellow riders away from them, they have their place...#cheeseburger #imlovinit #biggulps. Keep it pinned! -Brandon
The advantage of the Modular helmet comes into play when you pull into a crowded gas station on a hot day. As you approach the pumps, you can lift the lid. You can now breathe and talk to your buddies. You should not ride with the lid up -- it makes a tremendous lever against your neck!
Ehhh... if I'm pulling over for any length of time and having a conversation with my buddies, the helmets coming off - modular or not. If it's a quick stop, the helmet stays on and I can still chat with my buddies via our BT comm systems. To each their own, I reckon. Keep it pinned! -Brandon
In fact, I've rarely had an issue talking with others with my full-face helmet on (so long as I have my visor up). I understand why some prefer modulars, but they're not for me.
@@RevZilla Yep. I used to do that. Once I got modular and used it long enough to get used to it, I will never go back. FTR If you dissect the face bar on your full helmet, there is not much difference in the actual structure of the facebar.
On a 105-degree day here in Utah, pulling the facebar up is much more refreshing the simply racing the visor. FTR you can lift the visor only on a modular if you choose to.
Are modular helmets really louder? I thought they were quieter due to closing over the neck
Modulars are good for like quick errands. Example: I had to stop hat a ups for all of one minute to drop off a package, stop inside a convenience store to buy some masks, etc etc. taking my helmet on and off for some thing quick is a pain in the ass.
Roger that - makes sense! Unfortunately for me, most places won't allow me or will come up to me and ask that I remove my helmet when I walk in a store, modular or not (I've tried), so I guess it just depends on where you live. But to your point, that is certainly a nice little perk modular lids provide. Cheers! -Brandon
The bit with the burger had me rolling 🤣
The cheeseburger was genius. I have an E1 and for me, modular helmets are great for long-distance touring. If you need to make quick stops for gas and taking a leak, it is muuuch more comfortable to flip the lid up than to take the helmet and anything you have under the helmet off, like a skullcap, glasses, earplugs, etc. Even with ultralight carbon fiber lids, it gets old taking it off and on if you're riding all day multiple days.
@@bryanmathew2079 Ya but what about the Coke? lol!
I heard not so pleasant things about these helmets. At least Shadetree had not so pleasant things to say, I should say.
I haven't heard anything from Shadetree but I'll poke around. I like that guy a lot but we all have different expectations and experiences with moto gear, just keep that in mind. Cheers! -Brandon
@@RevZilla Yeah he made a video last year about that helmet. I get you're selling a product and could care less about negative reviews, so I'm not going to press the issue. Yes you are correct, to each his own. Thanks for taking the time to respond, please be safe out there 🙏

the difference in safety is minimal. If you impact so hard that the chin bar is compromised, you probably just died. Not so much eating but drinking is more of a concern. Being cool when its 95 degrees F , it helps.
I have both a C4 and a C4 Pro and I need to wear earplugs at highway speeds because of the noise. You've just explained why!!!
Quick question brother for ya here. What do you use to record your sound?? Thanks again. Great helmet nonetheless and review!!
I have an LS2 modular helmet, the chin bar folds right back to the rear of the helmet, so it’s easy and comfortable to ride this wat,not so with this Schubert and other similar helmets, the chin bar sits up in the wind and acts like a sail pushing back on the neck/head, not very comfortable over a long trip I would imagine
What are you using to record audio?
I use only modular helmets. One main reason is because I wear glasses and you don't have to take it off to get your helmet on. I like going for rides in the suburbs with the mouthpeice open. What motorcyclist don't like wind in his/her face? Still safer than not wearing a helmet. The noise and earplugs are a schlep, but I guess that applies to all helmets anyway🤷♂️
No one's going to burgle your McFoetus
Imagine a fly splatted on his burger before he took a bite lol
I think for modular I want it because I want to drink some water during ride and talk to people when stopped. Full face helmet can’t provide that. My c5 arrived today lol
Following Cobras!?!
Why is this video not discussing that jacket?? Man, that’s a good looking jacket! RSD?
RSD Clash. I have the CE version and I love it. Look at sizing down if you want it to have a more Euro fit. I'm a decent sized guy and the M fits me pretty spot on despite wearing a L in almost anything else.
We already have a Ride Tested of that jacket you can check out: ua-cam.com/video/-19-lHl7Vs4/v-deo.html
In parts of Europe you have to show your face when filling up with petrol. Usually they'll accept if you flip up the front of the helmet. If you prefer, you can also keep your helmet on when doing other things (comfort break etc.)
What? I have never heard about that. Live in sweden, ride in dk austria and germany….most places in germany there is no attendant and you pay after, (honor system). While here in sweden you pay with a card at the pump and mostly no one is working there……

I got a chance to try one on this past weekend. It fits differently than the C4, which in my case is very good. The shell size must change between L and XL because the L was uncomfortable and the chin bar touched my chin where the XL did not. I’m interested in accessory cheek pad thicknesses because I would like a bit more thickness around my cheeks.
flipper helmets are less claustrophobic. Easier to get on and off. Great for speaking with shop keepers.
I have a whistling sound from the left side when visor closed at high speed. So frustrating
Love my modular helmet. They give you the options of getting more air flow on those hot hot days. I like to take something to drink with me when I'm riding. Gives me the option to grab a quick drink while I'm stopped at a light.

Have a euro Schu C5. Like it. Personally having problems getting my visor to snap close (eventually it almost always will ) and the holes for the Pinlock have formed starburst cracks about 2 or 3 mm's outward. Replacement visors are a couple of weeks backordered. The positives far outweigh my two issues and almost certainly would replace my helmet with another C5.
Thanks for sharing - I've not heard or experienced these two discrepancies myself but I'll keep an eye out for it. Have you attempted adjusting the base plates a bit to address the shield closure? I've had to make a few adjustments from time to time for a better seel with various manufacturers. But, you could be referencing the internal sun visor and not the face shield. Sticking to your guns in the comments section. There is no way you can say that Full Face helmets are quieter in general than Modular. Completely inaccurate.
Yeah nah
are really full face helmets quieter than modulars? As I understood Schuberth modulars were the most quiet helmets on the market
Yes, traditionally Full Face helmets are able to control the sound levels easier since there are less gaps in the shell. It's not really an absolute for every single type of helmet comparison between full face and modulars, because that depends on brand to brand investments and model to model features. But overall, yes Full Face helmets are traditionally quieter than Modulars generally. Schuberth does claim certain dB level drops but there are some *'s in their claims about how it was tested and on what bike etc.
@@RevZilla thanks forse your answer. I just need a really quiet helmet, the research is so hard
@@MattiaBiggMattGentile No worries! FWIW, the easiest way to make any helmet quiet is by wearing ear plugs underneath. It will help remove the drone and wind noise that tends to cause the most long term damage to your ears.
