There was a time that even the cheapest Harley had front and rear crash bars to prevent any damage, but the company noticed that they can make more money now, because everyone drops the bike sooner or later.
I dropped my 15 street glide. Course I was drunk, wife on the back, and I hit a bad patch of road work which threw the bike to the left. Wife leaned and that was it. I was on asphalt and strong enough to set the bike down. Course I had front crash bars. only damage was a little scratch on the bottom of the bag.
My ‘95 Electra Glide was a tank, even got hit by a semi and knocked into a building once ( parked at a truck stop ) that resulted in a broken mirror, but my dad crashed it once and it got a few scratches on the fairing; if it had been a Japanese Touring bike I think it would’ve been busted-up. 30 years of riding and I dropped my sport bike last year for the first time....on a downhill soft sand/gravel u turn. I scrapped my full fairing. Hated the rest of the day. I went home and colour coated the white scratches, buffed and polished and moved on. I only see the scratches now when I am doing an oil change and I am inches away from the scratches. At the end of March 2024, I went to a local Harley dealership to sign the paperwork for a new '24 road king special. They had the bike outside and I went to check it out. I sat on the bike for a moment thinking of finally owning a Harley Davidson. Stepped off, admired it from the left side, walked around to the other side and while admiring it, the bike fell over in the parking lot. Sorry to see that man. I learned my lesson on my first Harley. Rookie mistakes with my first bike dropping it twice and a very costly mistake. I bought my new 23 Roadglide -ST last year and they don’t come with crash bars for the bags. That was one of the first things I bought for my bike. Front and back Santoro crash bars with replaceable tips. Knock on wood haven’t dropped it yet. It’s not a matter of if but when.
I appreciate you! Yeah, I think I’ve had crash bars on previous bikes and kind of took them for granted. Never really needed them. And so when I got this Harley, I looked at crash bars and with a $900 plus price tags for front and rear I decided to wait. Now I’ve learned my lesson for sure! Just ordered some from OG Moto. You never know, right? Thanks so much for sharing your experiences

My condolences. I once dropped my Fatboy when I made the mistake of barely touching the front brake lever when coming to a stop in a gravel parking lot. The front wheel immediately stopped rolling and started skidding, the front end kicked to the right, and then the bike was on its side before I could stop it. The damage was minor, and I only ended up replacing one of the muffler shields due to scratches.

I really like this bike but I’m having some trouble with how small the instrument cluster is. I feel like I would have preferred the old style analog gauges of the dyna. The readout looks very small. How are you getting on with it?
@@fazer2747 i’m like you, I love the analog style gauges as well. OMG… your video just gave me such an intense episode of déjà vu! Back in 2009 I did almost the exact same thing on my nearly brand new XR 1200. In my case, it was a combination of wearing new gel gloves and I apparently had a touch of front brake on while rolling through (at about 15 mph) a right hand corner, which was OK while still on asphalt, but as soon as I hit a small patch of gravel… front wheel locked and I found myself slammed to the ground and sliding about ten feet. Wrecked my helmet, new gloves, low side boot… brake lever and exhaust nicely scratched on the then brand new Harley. Fifteen years later my ego is still recovering🙄… Thanks for sharing your experience!
@@r.stanley1049 thank you so much for sharing! That really sucks. Interestingly enough I was trying out some new heated gloves for the first time on this ride.
