- How to Winterize a Travel Trailer - Are you winterizing your RV properly? Did you know there are winterizing steps that are often missed in many owner’s manuals? This video shows you how to properly winterize your RV. We are demonstrating on a Grand Design Imagine 2150RB, but the process can be applied to all RV’s.

❄Winterizing Steps (Standard Panel Plumbing)
1) Connect shore power & open slides.
2) Release pressure at water heater, then drain water heater. Close pressure release valve.
3) Drain low point drains
4) Drain fresh water tank (leave water tank valve open).
5) Bypass water heater.
6) Blow out fresh tank fill line.
7) Blow out city water line (leave a faucet open while connecting & disconnecting air)
8) Blow out fresh tank gravity fill.
9) Blow out black tank flush port.
10) Switch valve to syphon water into water pump. Insert hose into antifreeze
11) Turn on water pump, run antifreeze through all faucets, toilets, spray ports & low point drains.
12) Turn off water pump.
13) Clean up antifreeze splatter immediately.
14) Place paper towels under each faucet to prevent staining from residual drips.
15) Drain waste tanks, close waste tanks & fresh water tank valves.

What about line coming in from fresh water tank to pump. Will the line self drain when you drain fresh tank on its own.
@@pamelabeattie5180 That’s a great question. From my understanding, it will not self drain. Once you’ve emptied your fresh tank, you should turn on your water pump for about 15 seconds or so and open a faucet to empty the line.
That was the clearest explanation I have seen yet. I am new to this, and still a bit confused, but this has helped tremendously.

Ross. Such a good video! I learned a bunch. I’ve been an RV owner for the past 20 years 1994 Skyline Aljo 22 ft. Used and used it. Every summer. Living in Wyoming it’s critical to get the winterizing right! I thought I new it all until I watched your tutorial.
Recently we purchased an upgrade replacement to our older trailer. 2008 Arctic Fox 25R. Same size as your Grand Design. It has features that the older trailer doesn’t have. Heated tanks. Black tank flush. Slide.
After winterizing it I watched your video and quickly realized that I wasn’t done. I ordered the air hose fittings as soon as you identified them. Thanks!!! I just finished blowing out the fresh water fill, black tank flush, and park water hookup.
You can probably guess what happened……Yup, I blew all the antifreeze out of the cold side. Mess mess mess 🤪. Went ahead and replaced it. We get down to -45 occasionally every year. By the way, my water lines are clear so I can see where the antifreeze is. Anyway, great video! Your explanations are very clear and sequential which is important.
Another note, the bypass on my water heater is a single valve system. Cold side of the water heater. There must be a check valve on the hot outlet.

Thank you for taking time to make this video. Living in california I never knew about winterizing a trailer. I have a 2001 forest river 23 foot in pretty good shape. Then we moved after retiring to north east penn. And still was not aware of winterizing my trailer. And i found out the hard way water in the bathroom the water filter housing had blew apart from frozen water. replaced the housing and the wet floor. Now learning how to winterize with your video. It took me several months to find the access panel to the back of the water heater taking a lot of things apart to find a dead end. BUT ONE simple thing pulling out a bottom drawer and there it was a one valve bypass. thanks again

Lots of good info packed in just 21 minutes! Saw this a year ago just before we bought our first RV, and now this is going to be a must-watch every October as a refresher.
A couple of other things that we plan to do once a month while the RV is at the storage lot:
1) Run the generator about 10-15 minutes to circulate the gas and oil.
2) Drive a short distance, not more than a couple of miles for the same reason for the engine, and also to avoid developing flat spots on the tires for staying parked too long.

I think you already know that I use your vids to winterize my 2018 2150RB. Just did it this morning.
I arrived home yesterday from my last trip of the year (5 days in Virginia Beach) and it was supposed to go down to 28 degrees where I live in MD. I ended up putting a space heater in the camper so I could sleep without worrying about anything freezing. It's not a problem anymore.

I agree with other comments this video series is the BEST winterizing video I have seen. For me the tip that was a real eye opener was using a bucket for the antifreeze, I had a What No Way moment there, Why did I not think of that? It’s the little things in life you treasure.

I now know where my antifreeze hose goes to and what that bypass shutoff is by the Shure pump. None of this came with the owners manuals (2019 Geopro).

You offer good tips! I bought a new to us 5th wheel & checked various videos on tips & tricks winterizing. I am not a newbie to this but figured never too old to learn new tricks. One step I had never done on my past rvs or motorhomes was depress the city water valve to allow antifreeze to ooze out, and that, caused me to order & replace the valve because the o-ring dislodged itself and would no longer hold back pressure.I attempted to dismantle original valve but the plastic guide pin just would not dislodge itself from core to remove spring and re & re the o-ring.so going new was a safer option. So BEWARE to all who decide to depress city water valve during winterizing process, this could happen to you as well.
I sincerely appreciate your content. You have made the process of owning and maintaining a trailer completely manageable! Thanks to your videos, the memories my boys are going have about camping will be one’s of fun, not frustration and grumpiness because xyz broke or wasn’t done right. Same with my 2918 2109s Mini-Lite! No “useful/clear” information. After blowing out my water lines, I lost the “prime “ in the pump. Be spending tomorrow trying to get it back!

Thank you for the excellent video! I have another consideration that I hope will be helpful to your readers:
I have a Class A RV which has a residential refridgerator with a front panel water dispenser and ice dispenser. This has presented unique challenges for me when winterizing using compressed air. First, you have to perform multiple icemaking cycles in order for the lhose lines to be blown completely out, since the icemaker opens the water line to refill the ice tray infrequently, and only when the icemaker temperature is below freezing. To "cheat", I found out how to put the refridgerator into a self-test mode so that I could quickly repeat the icemaking cycle at room temperature. Secondly, the two water inlet valves for the water and ice dispensers, respectively, are located at the bottom back corner of the refridgerator. The water inlet valve for the icemaker contains an integral gravity sump to catch any contaminents in the water that are caught by its integral inlet screen. Unfortunately, its orientation (below the normal water flow path) allows it to collect water plus prevents compressed air from blowing it out. The result was that this valve (plastic) froze up and the water expansion broke open the valve. This year, while installing the replacement valve, I rotated its orientation by 180 degrees so that the sump will now drain downward. The valve has worked fine all summer, and I am hoping that my fix will help it survive the winter! Hopefully, this was helpful and not too confusing!

I enjoy Ross' videos. He's very informative, friendly and clear. CAVEAT: one of the steps he, and many others utilize, is not particularly helpful - using air to empty water lines. Water is heavier than air by 1000X so the air will compress the water some but not void the line of water. This is physics 101. Otherwise, the video is 'spot on'.
Thanks Allan, pushing air through the lines that don’t normally get antifreeze isn’t going to get all the water out as you said. It does however get large pools of water out leaving just a “mist” of water in the lines… which even if they freeze won’t damage anything since it’s so small. It also helps with mold and stagnant water (large amounts anyway). Glad you enjoy the videos and happy you’re here!

Ross, excellent video on winterizing. Going to winterize ours now in the next week or so, Starting to get a bit colder in PA now. I really like the details, no matter how small, that you suggest. I like your idea of putting a paper towel in the hot water drain plug mouth and paper towels under the facets and shower nozzle so antifreeze does not stain the sinks and shower. in most cases, tankless heaters can be just treated like plumbing lines... run antifreeze through the water heater. i would strongly urge that you try to find the manufacturers manual on winterizing your specific model though. its hard to find universal info on winterizing tankless models because there are some differences.

Not sure about all campers but on mine when I’m filling with antifreeze I just press the backflow preventer on the city water and that will push antifreeze out that line removing any water. Also the fresh tank fill on mine is just a big opening and not a threaded hookup. Good Video!

One comment that should be added, is when you blow out the City Water line, you need to turn the value back to the Fresh Tank Fill. The reason for this, is when you get to the step to hook your antifreeze line and you turn the water pump on, the antifreeze will pour out from the City Water connection.
