- A detailed review of the Thomas And Friends Totally Tidmouth Take-n-Play Mega set. This set cost me $150 and includes Tidmouth Sheds, Maithwaite and Mail Depot (although my set did not have this), Cranky At The Docks, 22 Pieces of Track. Rolling stock includes Thomas, Percy, Salty, Mavis, Toby, Troublesome Truck, 3 Cargo Cars and a variety of cargo. Also have a peep at the new Thomas items I have for my ever expanding and amazing Thomas collection.

I have three wooden playsets in my garage and one of them is a Chuggington, it was far less expensive than a same sized Thomas one..!
Yes I have had issues with Toby, found that out on a recent review where I find the Chuggers wooden do not pull through a tight wooden curve due to the sets of three wheels, disappointing to have this fail revealed considering the history of sets of three wheels on wood is a well knows issue
@10LEIGH10 there is a black fleck in the plastic, but the many little features in this set are left unpainted.
what I should do is add some painting to this set and show how it could really shine, pretty sure you would be amazed what a little bit of paint in the right areas would do
this would be a very simple thing to do in the toy factory, but it seems good detail is not part of the detail of certain sections of the tank and play set, i feel thats rather sad indeed
@SI3DFilms in the talking engines review I will be putting a Thomas under destructive testing to see just how robust the talking models are

And all the steam team (including Nia and Rebecca)
He means this was back in 2011. Nia & Rebecca didn’t exist until big world big adventures in 2018. Plus they don’t have Official take along/take-n-play models.

Nia and rebbeca are god aweful characters I mean they had no character development . I mean nia didn’t have an exploit and rebbeca didn’t pull 2 dead diesels down the mainline

Tho maybe if we had some tender engines in this set it would have been better

@Lightninging63 I do like the fold away aspect of the sections of this set, the part I don't like is the neglect for proper detailing and the very messy way the sections join together via a number of small pieces of track
in a way the huge b ox is far more impressive than the end result of the set together
This set is massive
At least the engines have painted buffers, that’s extremely rare these days.
@ThomastheE2engine yes, if you look closely at the take n play track there is actually a right and wrong way up ( look at the sleepers to see )
even the box artwork has some sections of track upside down, I have to admit it took me a while to work out all the M to F joins. Clearly this says to me this mega set idea came along as some sort of wacky idea.
The track system I like the most is the old blue Tomy one, I can't stand the newer trackmaster one, in my books it;s a fail track system.
Looking back at this set now, it’s still a nice old school classic. I’ve recently gotten all the fold up playsets to replicate this layout at a thrift store in my town, along with some other Thomas goodies.

often the wooden sets will have a very special Thomas which is often a big reason why you may purchase it, I think It's close to the time to do a retro review of the massive Ultimate Tomy Thomas set I purchased 5 years ago and remind us all how a mega set should be done, have not seen Trackmaster pull this off yet
I agree Leo; Children's toys should feature details. "It's just a kid's toy" should not be a valid excuse for poor quality or missing elements that could improve the quality of the toy.
This set could start a brand new adventure for young engineers.And with the soon Dieselworks from the new movie "Day of the Diesels" it will be a great addition to this set.

@TerryMannfan i have had quite a few mails related to the lack of detailing on Thomas sets of today, including the Trackmaster range. It seems good detailing is now a issue where in the past it was generally done.
I know there are lots of these sets being bought as learning aids and for children who have disabilities, putting on clear name details is really important. The colour choice of yellow for the Tidmouth sheds is weird.
Now we see if anything changes!

Toby has always been my favourite...He is just...different? from the other trains I guess. What is missing are all the old ones, Henry, James, Gordon, Harold, Trevor, Daisy, etc.
@ShuntingTank043 Mavis is the only girl in the set, maybe Emily would be a curious addition.

@LEON13858 whenever I see a toy hitting the $300 mark it has me very curious indeed. I have to say the sets I have seen in the shops are very heavy, does this translate to a great set.
as I found with the Totally Tidmouth set the enormous box has far less volume of actual toys inside, lots of box bloat to make it impressive in the shops but almost impossible to mail, I suspect the online stores would have issues sending this sort of sized box out without huge postage costs involved
@TheLukei in all my Take Along Thomas engines there are changes, one of the biggest is the early ones had all metal ends to the boilers, now they are plastic.
I wonder who else knows about the early take alongs ( 2002 era) and the all metal design?
@penninefilms I have had quite a few PM's in relation to the missing details in the Thomas sets of today, and sure I had to investigate. I believe the detail is now missing. The Trackmaster series does suffer this same downgrade of detailing.
Sure extra detail does cost a little more but this stuff is not cheap, I'm pretty sure the Thomas empire can afford to raise their bar and keep a much closer eye on what they pump out of China
The Thomas fans deserve a better product.
@alexanderprice6 it's amazing how many have asked for James already. And maybe he would be the classic tender engine addition this set needs.

@11wow111RETURNS yes, this feature only worked for about a week, i should investigate why it stopped working
the set would be definitley worth it if it had some exclusive characters, some that had never been availiable, or some that have been discontinued for a while. I know the wooden range does this very successfully. Perhaps one of the narrow gauge engines, or an oddball like D199 would be appropriate. Or even the ever elusive Pip/Emma

@Lumpyrox1412 those diesels are some custom made ones for a stalled project, based on a ERTL diesel.

just on the new direction of youtube is was spelled out to me at a partner meeting at google HQ I went to late last year, but I still have issues understanding exactly what racy means. even the google staff struggled with a definition.

@HankAmericanEngine the engine so many have requested is Duck, he's mighty popular but a long lost idea it seems in todays Thomas world.
I used to get the ERTL toys when I was a kid, and it always used to bother me that they never coloured the red rings on the boilers. Fortunately my Grandfather was a bit of a modeller, so he was able to paint the rings on them for me.
Considering how much we have to pay (Thomas toys in New Zealand are no cheaper), you'd think they'd be able to go that extra mile and paint the details. I could understand them not doing so if these were budget toys (each paint app costs extra), but they're clearly not intended to be inexpensive.
I fell like this set should have a mail car and Annie and Claribel because they just are better than a ton of cargo cars. Really though there are lots passengers out there!

I love the high tech special effects.. :) The Mega set is obviously designed to have missing parts, so you have to go and buy the other sets as well.. :) Again another informative and interesting video.. and I can understand your issues with the sets, especially the tracks.. doesn't seem as if they have done too much thinking, but then again I guess the sexchange pieces are there for a reason.. :)

@10LEIGH10 on the aspect of the shake shake bridge your definitely not the first person who detailed to me issues with this set.. I have had quite a few PM's on the now lacklustre trackmaster sets, and it seems there are issues related to details there as well.
in all it's a bit rude considering the money this stuff costs and we all know in the past there were some really great sets available
I will do a retro review of my Tomy ultimate thomas set just to remind us all of how good it was

@cubeproduktion the smaller characters are around the size of a matchbox van vehicle, in the video the scale mat I use has 1cm squares, so there is a way of measuring them on the video

My favorite engines are Edward and Duke. Duke is a Narrow-Gauge engine that was found by the Small Controller, Thin Clergyman, and Fat Clergyman. I can relate to Duke because I keep saying,"That'll never suit 'is Grace!"
I'd like to see a James model in there, he just adds more to a set because he can pull everything to make more stories

it's interesting wooden toys are generally associated with quality and a lost era of toy making, plastic is associated with mass production and low cost to consumers
with care these wood sets would be great for generations
This playset is very nice. But I think there must be some changes.
1. A metallic Thomas instead of a normal.
2. Salty and Toby has to be replaced by a Divious Diesel and Gordon or Henry.
3. There are have to be more rolling stock. A breakdown-crane. More troublesome-trucks and Annie with Clarabel.
4. The Fat Controller and a road vehicle. Maybe Trevor, Terence or Bertie.

The wooden series, I would have to say is the best thomas line of toys one can buy, and the price reflects this. One way I got over the exorbitant prices, but still being able to build a massive playset (They did get quite big! a few sqm at least) was to use the blue plastic track, and all of the bits that go with that instead of the wooden track. The wooden charicters ran perfectly fine on it (Except Toby on certain peices). I would expect those sets to be arround the $400-$500mark easilly.
With regard to your first point, my favourite character was always Duncan. I suppose that makes me careless, lazy and rude but I mean well and get the job done eventually.
Relevant to the set, most characters are from Thomas's Branch Line; I think Daisy, Annie, Clarabel and Henrietta ought to have been included.
The Waterton/Maithwaite issue you pointed out occurs frequently in children's toys. It's essentially the same toy 'dressed' differently. The poor detailing is probably just to cut costs.
I like the one at 3:50 , hes freight, and my favorite charector i love freight, but it would have been cool to see the DD40X, thats my favorite train because it was the biggest freight hauler ever made, and still is!:)
I had those dominos as a child! I never knew where they really came from though.
I like Fergus the railway traction engine, because he is very unique looking, as well as his real-life counterpart. I'm kind of a sucker for unusual locomotives and rolling stock.

Just taken another look at the dominos - they really are a thing of beauty, as far as unique merchandise goes. I dare say it must be quite rare too. The colours of the dominos still seem to be very fresh too. Your ladies are doing a bang up job there!
