Great Sound, by the way where I can download the multi track music you was use on this video ? So I can learn how to mix like you do... Please let me know... Thanks
WOW !! I'm moving to a place where I can finally build a decent home studio! I've been using my good old Rode NT2 for years! I have always wanted a microphone of Neumann quality !! : D
Totally ❤.. course my drummer prefers his lunchbox w/ api’s and neves pres and eq’s 👍🏻 wish he lefted em at home lol .. ive been wanting to here the raw pre’s
Wow man. This is amazing. I just finished my 4th gig at a big local venue with an M32. I grew up running analog I did not want to learn the digital stuff. I cut my teeth on the Mackie DL32r but never tackled the m or x32 Every show I've ever done on either of those digital mixers I've always been running around with my head chopped off hoping that the settings from the previous guy are going to work and only feeling comfortable about halfway through. Last night after my third gig there I watched the first half of this video and learned so much about the board. And especially how to properly use a gate. Gates have always been hit or miss for me and I usually didn't use them but watching you and zooming in to see your settings REALLY helped. Tonight's gig went SUPER smooth and so many of the things I didn't know before already feel like second nature. Thanks again! Watching the rest of the video now.
Great vid! Few additional pro tips: 1) Eqing a kick drum 2:16 - Put a HPF there @ 30HZ. Your PA is not able to reproduce this subbass frequencies, by doing so you get a more tight response from them and get a bigger headroom on subs too. 2) When done with Kick, bring the overheads to the mix. Those mics capture most of the drum kit. If you would to bring snare, toms, hh and other contact mics first, the overhead mics suddenly add a lot of new information that is really hard to decipher (should I eq out the harshness in the OH or on the snare mic?) and phase issues are nearly impossible to address. Phase issues happen when there are is more than one mic picking up the same sound source resulting in different sound when both mics are on. So: Kick, then overhead, and then bring the other mics one by one as in the video. If the sound of your snare (tom, hh...) is strange after turning on the contact microphone, try swhitching the polarity and or delaying it a bit. 3) AG dissapearing in the full band mix 29:43 - This happened to me a lot. The quick solution is to make the comp slower (raise the attack to something around 20ms). I am a 901 lover too! :D Personally do not like to use gate as default plugin, rather using it as a tool really only where it is needed. In most cases when EQd right, the kick and toms do not really need it. Thanks for what you are doing!
on 1, not necesarily a bigger headroom on subs too, but on the overall signal, since the summing on the L/R on the x32/m32 is not the best, the hpf on the 30, even 40, will gain you a couple of db headroom, helped me a lot of times when i had a db limit from the club or venue ;)
I work in the corporate AV world and see these a lot for events. Your video helped me out as an A2 aspiring to move to an A1 position. I have a big gig tomorrow and was doing some brushing up on this board the night before...thank you
Loved the way you made it look so simple even though it boils down to how we hear the sounds. Not dependent on what you saw most of the time but mainly on what you heard. Thank you MxU & Lee Fields.
I just got onboard as a Sound Engineer, at my church, about a month ago, and I'm really getting up to speed with the M32. After watching this video, I can definitely look at the mix that is setup and really get an idea of what the Lead Sound Engineer mixed.
Thanks for posting this Lee, we are in the process of training up some of our volunteers in the Spanish church and this was a great way to show them that in 30 minutes you can dial in a mix. I was going to make some snarky comment about not enough 18K air on the kick drum :)
Dynamics on this unit are pretty smooth and transparent.. got my attention 😊👍🏻my favorite so far as digital mixers but not so reliable is the studio live … presonus dynamics would be nice in this unit 😉👍🏻 my guess the processing and latency has a lot to design and final production to keep engineers happy😉👍🏻
Really brought the vocals a much more professional quality sound, similar to Pat Benetar. Great Job on the band mix as well, very nice punch to the rhythm section
Hi! I have a couple cuestións, Is there any chance you can show us your routing settings on your Mixer and DAW? I'm curious on how you where you able to send signals in to your inputs without an actual band playing. Also is it possible to record mutitracking post EQ and effects from the m32 in to a DAW?
Waves Tracks is a very good program to record and playback with a simple interface usb cable. A lot of youtube clips about that. Install the driver from the mixer into your laptop/pc and ready to play bro.
Grreat job bro, really helped me out on a crash course of moving fast. Set me up well for a worship practice I'm mixing tonight on the M32. Have 6-7 years on a CL-5 but never this one. Blessings sir!
Great job coming from someone has made a career of touring with CCM / Secular artist alike in churches to stadiums and everything in between doing audio. Thank you for this!
Lee you dont now how much i really wanted to hear and see how you do your mixes... woow mxu u rock indeed for me.. all the way from the other side of the globe. Great job man
Glad to see you demonstrate that the technique used on a DigiCo, SSL, Yamaha and even Waves plugins also applies to these budget consoles. Question as a heavy x32 user.... I see you used an aux/bus for the sub and not the m/c. Is there any functional or technical reason you chose that option over the other?
also wondering - just guessing here but perhaps did that due to the way he normally routes subs...x/m32 has convenient controls/routing for main/subs with their LR+M
Thank you for this instructional video I have some questions. Does the x32 have a trim feature?? Also I use a ql5 for church it has a analog and digital gain. Can I use the digital gain as a trim function??
As my previous comment stated I'm still learning how to use the m32. One setting I haven't changed from the previous engineer that I built my own scene off of is the main mix preamp gain knob. They had it set around 12 o'clock. But I saw that when I selected the main mix the preamp gain meter was sometimes clipping during the show. The main mic output wasn't clipping but I'm worried something isn't right. What do the input leds in the gain section indicate when selecting the main mix and should it be at zero? I was too afraid to mess with it mid show so now I'm curious.
Cool mix! I really enjoy your lesson. I felt distortion in main vocal or I wrong? Great drum sound. I like to know the another mics in your band. Thanks for take your time to show us your job!!
Such a great video! would love to see a video of Lee or Jeff going in depth with the X/M32 with the built-in effects and inserts. Keep up the great helpful content!
hello Lee, tks for the vdeo. my question is: how I do to work with my mix separate. If a recorded my church with Pen Drive, I will have a mixer closed. How you do to open the tracks ?
Hello Lee, I have the same console at my church. And there are some features that I don't understand. Like when you say that you are going to trim it. the attack, release, hold feature and some more. I am really not good at what i am doing but i am looking forward to learn from where ever i can find some help. I would like your help if possible. I really appreciate this video i really learn something from it.
in lots of podcast and tutorials they say manipulate multi mic instrument as a group i mean like in a vca because of phase cancelation but here u just eqed and compressed snare 2 different mics individually and it sound good so whats the point ? i got confused
Excellent!!!! Thanks some Of these techniques I use so I guess I’m following the path of lee fields....the only thing I have not use or practice a lot is the clean and dirty bass technique maybe due to the nature of music I’m mixing
Not always. Always listen for what sounds the best. BUt, yes, most oftenn it's gonna be out of phase. Sometimes, just leave out the bottom mic, might sound better.
What I didnt get is where the music is coming from. I suppose since no band is being shown , its coming from a previous recording . If that's the case what kind is that where you still can mix separate tracks and how was it connected to the mixer.
Great video! Can we use FX individually in each channel instead of using the FX Buses? Or are we always forced to use the FX buses for using effects? Thanks and sorry for my ignorance.
The X32 has a usb interface card that lets you playback tracks from a DAW and patch them in like they were coming in the inputs. Search for "Virtual Soundcheck" if you want more info.

That’s why he puts his subs on an aux! In another video, he said he started doing this to get it sounding good without the subs so that it translates well to a stream mix. Think: streams are mostly watched on small speakers (iPhone, tv, etc.), so if you can make it sound good without subs, it will translate well!
Great video! You made it that guickly, I'm impressed! :) Thank you so much for this video, it will help a lot in our church to show them how professionals do it. :)
Before I purchase a X32 in practicing my mixing with x air 18. $500 can’t get a better mixer to practice on before spending the big bucks. Once I purchase the x32, xair 18 will be used for Monitor mix.
Question: on X32, the channel gain recommended at -18 db. Is it the same on this? I see your vocals and some drums are closer to -12 db or even a tad higher. Is that just a preference thing? I'm always militant about -18 db but sometimes the vocals don't "compete" very well with other instruments despite EQ and such. Should I be running Vox a bit "hotter?"
Thank you for your video helped me a lot. God Bless you. I need a video that tells me how to make the setup for live online streaming. I can't make it sound good. I have an xr18 console. Thank

Maybe it's one "secret" of mixing : KEEP IT AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE,
This also goes to show you that great sources can make a budget console shine.
