1975: SHILDON celebrates THE AGE OF STEAM | Nationwide | Retro Transport | BBC Archive

Martin Young reports from the mining town of Shildon in County Durham, which is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the passenger steam train by bringing together the greatest collection of steam engines ever assembled. Over 300,000 people from all over the world have descended upon the town to witness locomotives like The Flying Scotsman, Sir Nigel Gresley, GWR 6960 Raveningham Hall, and Locomotion No. 1 - the father of them all - rumbling over the original railway line.
He speaks to some celebrity steam enthusiasts like the Bishop of Wakefield, Reverend Eric Treacy - who has had a steam engine named after him, painter David Shepherd - whose enthusiasm for these machines is so great that he now has two engines of his own, and the Reverend W. Audrey - whose popular Railway Series of children's books has made a global star of Thomas The Tank Engine and ignited a love of steam engines in a new, younger generation.

Wow this is amazing! I’d only seen grainy footage of this. It was the biggest display of pre-nationalisation liveried loco’s since 1948.
Rare to see, now they are all painted black or dark green.

I can vividly remember watching the Cavalcade from a seat in the stand when I was 10 years old. I had never seen or since seen so many steam locomotives. I remember it was special day in 1975. It seems even more so watching this video.
