Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light are some of of the best games I've played in a long time. Decent story, good stealth, great combat, incredible atmosphere. I played the redux versions, which greatly improve the stealth and make the combat a little bit more dynamic and ballistic.
Redux improves stealth and combat? I don't think so. They cut down a lot of the nuance to it. The enemy's accuracy was based on your visibility, if you were green, they couldn't hit you for shit. If you were yellow, they had decent accuracy, if you were red, you will probably die. In redux, there's just nothing and then visible. Not an improvement. Enemies don't care about your visibility.
Actually, the redux version completely overhauls the entire stealth system. It adds one button stealth takedowns and makes the stealth overall far far more forgiving and easier.
@@Tucher97 you read wrong, the original stealth is harder but it made way more sense and was directly tied into the combat as the enemy's accuracy was based on your visibility level.
@@Tucher97 It honestly wasn't. It's one of the best features of the game, and it set it apart from every other hitscan shooter. If you used lighting to your advantage, and actually paid attention to your surroundings, you'd win most encounters.
I just play original and the stealth mechanic was crazy hard, especially with human enemies like nazi and reds, they all wear helments means silent, one head shot kill is just impossible. Alarm raised will never go away by hiding, you have have to restart the whole section if that happens.
Just a note to people deciding between the original and the Redux: If you care about performance, go with the Redux. 2033 was one of the first DX11 games and it plays like it, meaning it performs like absolute liquid ass. If you're averse to variable framerate, then you will not enjoy the original, the Redux is worlds ahead of the original from a technical standpoint.
I pllayed it on a gaming laptop with RTX 2060 in it. The framerate fluctuated between 140 and 210 throughout the whole game which to me is absolutely bananas. Too bad the credits were part of a cutscene and thus kept roling at 29 FPS which looked awful.

6:54 Coming across this trading caravan is the point where i sell one of my weapons, drive ahead to grab a dead enemy's weapon, and then reverse to sell it to them 😅 ammo really is hard to come by
Great game that was missed by many people, including myself until very recently. You can get the Redux version for around 20$ and it includes both games, well worth your money.
One of my favorite game series ever... I would recommend to play the redux version first because the original is good but redux is perfect they added more environments better graphics, much better stealth mechanics. For me this is one of the best fps games ever made together with last light.. Ir reminded me of the good old days of half life 2.
A note about the MGR currency ammunition. In real life it's called 7n6 and it's a loading of 5.45x39mm for the AK-74 that's full metal jacket and has a small hollow space in the tip with mass in the back of the bullet, so that when it hits something, it tumbles like crazy, creating a much bigger wound than would be possible otherwise without breaking the Geneva Convention rule about expanding bullets. It's good stuff, and even though I don't have a 74, I have a few packets of 7N6.
The game looks good, but for me the combat was way too clunky and the enemy ai isn't very good. I really wanted to like this game but realistically I'd have to give it a 5 out of 10. Not great, not bad, just average
I adore the Metro 2033 universe. I've read the books with English translations and played both games excluding the redux editions. I'd love for more games to be released and for more books in the franchise to get translations for we English speakers.
Corridor-like gameplay makes sense, since you're literally in a corridor world...the metro. I think the level design captures the books really well. You can finish metro without killing a single person (except prescripted person here and there), stealth IS completely viable. Hell, there's even a karma reward system for doing so in the game and your ending will be different depending on your playstyle. You can even buy sneaking suit like armor. I've played through each of the games at least 5 times and I keep finding new stuff - the game is linear, yes, but there's lots and lots of stuff to explore, you just miss them at first...or second or third time.
I realize this is quite late to the party, but Redux has a lot more changes than just weapon handling, UI, and graphics. The whole stealth system was overhauled, and many levels updated to account for it. Beyond that, a small but welcome change was the connection of several levels that had previously be separated by a loading screen, which in some cases involved adding "connective tissue" in the form of small new levels.
Regardless of which version you buy, I absolutely love both Metro games, they perfectly emulate my favorite game series (STALKER) and go for a more atmospheric and environmental experience most games now lack. You brought up fair points, but not many games immerse you like this anymore.
Makes no sense advising people to play the original. The Redux version fixes most of the glaring issues with the original along with graphics that are twice as good.
Late to the comments but yes 1 or 2 bullets is all there is sometimes in Metro, in the book Artyom sometimes only had one mag or even a handful of bullets at a time, the army and hansa would have more than enough ammo but the people had next to nothing.
I beat Metro 2033 Redux on ranger twice, and both times I had the same criticism. The auto saves don't always work when you are moving through areas. More than once I lost 10-15 minutes of progress and exploration to bad autosaves only to come back through that area and get two saves in half the time. I didn't find 2033's ranger mode as difficult as Last Light's, where I was nearly out of oxygen on the surface at all times.
Just finished the Redux version myself and uploaded a review to my channel, first time playing the Metro series. A hidden gem! Seems like there are some great gameplay improvements, but man I do prefer the more-horror based look of the monsters from the original version.
Redux actually completely overhauls a lot of the game. Especially most of the complaints at the start of this vid. Stealth is much better. But it also adds multiple difficulties as well as the choice between ‘Survival’ which is more like the original 2033, or ‘Spartan’ mode which is more like Last Light. Playing on Spartan, which has a ton more resources for those who like to run and gun over stealth, and Normal difficulty combined make for a pretty easy, but not too too easy, experience. You can totally play Metro as a run and gun shooter having full ammo and resources the entire playthrough as long as you’re thorough. And even if you’re not thorough to be honest as ammo is everywhere. And on Normal, your health regens out of combat or even in combat if you can not get shot for a few seconds. If you want the challenge, it is there for sure on higher difficulty modes in conjunction with survival mode as well. But if you want more of a shooter experience, you can have it. You can have a harder shooter experience on Spartan Ranger or Hardcore or you can have an easier experience on Spartan Normal or you could go Survival Normal or Survival Hardcore. There are enough difficulty options to suit anyone’s playthrough. If you get frustrated then your difficulty is set to high most likely. I rarely stealthed my first two playthroughs of the game and it was a blast.
stumbled upon this channel and rly liking the first 1-2 vids, its tight and well thought out a lot of times these videos tend to be bloated and long and it seems peeps loving it but i think one need to do the work prior to that and compress and think about it and then make a short tight quintessential video i like those long videos from time to time but man you have a lot of games reviewed its gonna be nice to check it all out
Very good and fair review - all points considered. I really enjoyed the game because I love this type of dystopian point of view from Eastern Europe. Luckily, I can speak the language so that is helpful when playing the game. There are a few extra changes in the Redux version such as more places you can explore when you're outside (Dead City 1 for example) as well as the obvious graphic upgrades. Anyway, It's a game I love to play in the dark when it is raining or snowing outside. Good review!
I found that when playing any of the metro games in Russian the background characters speaking to each other would overrule the subtitles of the main person you're speaking to face to face. This made it impossible to pick up key plot points or clues.
The redux version is really the way to go from what i heard. They've updated the stealth system to Metro last light its mechanics and several other small tweaks/changes. I agree that the stealth wasn't good in the first one but that didn't stopped me from liking it alot.
I remember hearing rumors that 4A (metro devs) were planning on making an open world metro, or atleast a less linear one. If that was the case then I think that game would be the closest to stalker 2 we could all possibly ask for.
Thankfully, the Redux Version also improve the stealth mechanics by simply put the great stealth system of Last Light. And with that new gameplay twitch, the game is almost perfect. Great review as always.
The only problem I had with this game was the default FOV. I was feeling sick after only playing for 20 minutes, and I had to bump it up to be able to continue playing.
I wouldn't say the '33 and Redux are completely the same. You should totally play it, because they actually revise its stealth system to mirror Metro: Last Light. Anyway, cool review! Thanks for that.
not to mention, a remaster that actually significantly improves the game. Those metro remasters are genuinely the most beautiful games ive ever played, only rivaled by BF1 and Far Cry 5.
Any potential of a review of the MISERY mod for Call of Pripyat, what with the scary game vibe? It doesn't quite rework everything in CoP but it does add quite a bit of atmosphere and difficulty in a similar vein of Brutal Doom. Would be interesting to see your thoughts on it. Regardless, great review, pretty happy you decided to touch on these games. Definitely some of my favorites.
I’m gonna be honest, I didn’t realise stealth was an option until I finished the game... FYI I first finished the game with no ammo in any of my guns for the final mission, that was fucking difficult to say the least.
The OG is way better than the Redux in my opinion. I just liked the rougher designs of the mutants and weapons. The Redux is worth playing, but I just remember how much OG 2033 hooked me with its harsh, ugly yet beautiful look. The stealth being tough made the Nazi vs Commie scene a lot more memorable as well. The dumbed down stealth of Last Light used in Redux kinda made it too easy.
i've palyed metro 2033 and last light a few times. what is impressed in my mind about thoose games is the atmosfere. they build such a belivable and well put togheder world that after a few minutes in the game the immersion is total. this game is all about immersion and atmosfere, sadly we don't see many games that expand on theese ideals
For a game with so many freaking awesome and powerful weapons, this series sure did a good job creeping the shit out of me time and time again. Because I normally am too scared to finish any survival horror game with limited or no weapon supply. But in the Metro games, they always gave me a sense of security and power when I was between exploration until they started to throw creepy shit at my face for another around. For an easily scared player like me, it was almost masochistic to finish those two games. But damn wasn't it a hell of a ride.
Yep. To me the heart-pounding culmination occured inside the Library (those fucking apes...), as it well should. Other than that I found that the further I progressed, the more comfortable I felt around the dark. Nosalises (and the surface type, whatever they're called) make plenty of sounds before they approach so it's hard for them to take you by surprise. Lurkers are annoying af but they appear so rarely it doesn't even matter. I started out crouching basically all the time but later on felt secure enough running around like a crazy person.
Having played both versions I have to say I prefer the Redux version. The lighting is more appealing if not more 'realistic' (I found the original too brown for my tastes, but I can understand those who prefer it that way), the performance is much better, and the cutscenes are mostly kept in 1st person, adding to the immersion. Stealth may have been 'dumbed down', but honestly it wasn't great in the original either (it was no Thief). Both versions are worth playing, but it's definitely more 'survival horror' than FPS.
I got this & last light remastered for the PS4 pro for £3.74. I am playing with a pair of skullcandy crusher evo headphones that has sensory bass & haptic feedback. One of the best experiences I have ever had on console
Yes! I was hoping you would review this! Its one of my favourite games, im also a fan of the books. Have you played the second one, metro last light? The stealth actually works imo (i dont have too much experience with stealth games), you can go a lot quieter than the original. If you havent played it yet, you should
I have heard hat, but you didn't mentioned 2 endings. Only how they have an impact on the end. Also, remember to mention in 2034 how start of the game made one of the endings not canon.
I've enjoyed most of your reviews but I am curious about one thing, which fps games that is recently released (from seventh generation until now) might become a classic 10 years from now?
I had metro 2033 in my steam librabry for 4 years now but I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I really liked the atmosphere but the stealth system was just horrible in my opinion. When the redux version was for sale I immediately bought it, finished it and damn, I had a lovely time. The stealth is a lot better and in my opinion, is perfectly balanced. I'm currently playing Metro Last Light it's still a great game even though I still prefer the first game introduction to the universe. I would have loved to actually see Artyom becoming a ranger rather than being told. I would have also loved a better tour of the now safe d6. Would make a great connection between the prequel and the sequel.
The Metro is one of those games that you play for the intense immersion. Walking around and listening to everything going on for the good ending is so nice. Especially for a first playthrough.
I liked it, but there were some sections that were unbelievably brutal. Then the same section in Redux was passed first or second go. I would strongly recommend the Redux version for first time buyers. .... Having said this, I played the original version about eight times. Yet still found the reasoning to buy the Redux, which I played about three times. After which I had my fill of Metro. (Overall though, playing a game eleven times says a lot about the game.)
Great review, and great game. However 3:18 you are wrong about the anomalies in stalker. You can think of them as distortions of the world, and are as ill intentioned as a fire burning your house. Bad for you, but ultimately neutral to your existence and have no mind of their own. Freedom, a faction in stalker, believes the zone (and the consequent anomalies) are a gift. Duty (the rival faction) believes they must protect the world from the dangers of the zone You, my friend, just seem to have the opinion of the duty faction. But that is not the “opinion” of the stalker franchise.
There is a lot of good tactics that you can find on the Wiki, and it's great that the community is so invested in Metro 2033. I can't wait for Metro 2035
Also, the trading isn't that bad, because the last station for trading is in Polis, so if you spend all your money there, it's fine, and past that, stealth is impossible, so you're not loosing anything spending all your money
The gameplay wasn't the best out there and I feel like it's a lot more fun on the ranger hardcore difficulty, but the story, the setting and the atmosphere are some of the best that I've seen in any game. Also, I recommend reading the book (best to do it before playing the game), especially if you enjoyed the game, I found it a lot better than the already great game. Great review, by the way.
If you like atmosphere, then you should check out Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason. It gives those similar vibes like Metro does for me, though it is notorious for having sub-par performance even on modern PC setups. Despite that, it's a very interesting game.
Gggman, did you know, that ukraine has some of the best FPS developers on the post-soviet ground? I would totally reccomend all games by "action forms", such as: -- cryostasis: sleep of reason -- vivisector: beast inside -- chasm: the rift And all of the carnivores series As well as some hidden gems like "You are empty" (great level design and atmosphere) "firestarter" (from gsc, developers of stalker) Xenus (original and sequel were both way ahead of it's time) And collapse (TPS, but, never the less, awesome) It would be totally kickass to see reviews of those games on your channel someday. As for this review, it was great, as always. I have felt as if i have actually completed the game, without playing it. will definetely check it out.
+Gggmanlives Nice! Fun fact: at the time of it's release, one of russian vg magazines sat down to play it in the friggin freezing chamber, of a random meat factory, with no special clothing, whatsoever. Every time the player got to a checkpoint/heat source they would get an element of winter clothing. Now that's how you do a let's play!
+Der Krazy Kraut Pariah's campaign is so freaking boring. Same boring firefights over and over and over again. I liked the level creator, but it was a little bland and missing a lot of features or objects. Also spent way too much time trying to get the land and the buildings to cooperate with each other.
Thanks, this video just reminded me I have this stashed somewhere in my closet. Good game asides from ammo annoyances and what not. Definitely would've played this at least one more time but I got so many games sometimes it's a bit hard to catch up. Worse yet, I have a regular job so don't have as much time for gaming as I used to but now I got an urge to go dig this game outta my closet...
I like the art style of this much better than Redux. Seems like a lot of the characters were completely re-skinned for Redux, but they gave 'em a less gritty, more action-y feel.
''You're gonna spend the majority of your time in this game taking the stealth Approach unless you're DSP.'' lol

The 2035 book is just the novelisation of Last Light.
+Odeghy no, it was going to be but later became a sequel to last light, focusing on Artyom's attempts to contact people outside Moscow and how this is affecting his relationship with Anna
Bonnie1020Production
Really? I'm sure Glukhovsky said it was LL in much greater detail. When was the change?
+Odeghy not sure
6:54 Coming across this trading caravan is the point where i sell one of my weapons, drive ahead to grab a dead enemy's weapon, and then reverse to sell it to them 😅 ammo really is hard to come by
Loved both this game and its predecessor.
The band that plays on the radio also sounds a bit like an eastern European version of Metallica.
You're like my personal shopper for videogames. Never played Doom before finding your channel now I see the light.
A really atmospheric game and the book is really great too.
It's good stuff, and even though I don't have a 74, I have a few packets of 7N6.
glad to see another aussie gamer love you're videos
I'm always pleasantly surprised to go away for a few weeks and then see a plethora of videos awaiting me :)
Librarian staredown, seeing this monster just walk away was one of the best moments in my gaming history. Great game, thx for review.
Huh, I only played the Redux version and it's curious to see that it also changed how a.i. and stealth works.
Makes no sense advising people to play the original. The Redux version fixes most of the glaring issues with the original along with graphics that are twice as good.
Never played the metro games before but the game seems to be up my alley. I wouldn't mind playing more games like this now a days.
I didn't find 2033's ranger mode as difficult as Last Light's, where I was nearly out of oxygen on the surface at all times.
the outdoor areas in this game look orgasmic and graphically it even put to shame many 2017 titles
It does get an award from me for some of the coolest gun designs. Especially the nailgun(I think) and the shotgun.
I dislike redux because they changed Artyom's voice for the journal entries in between levels.
Same. Also they fucked the combat and stealh.
stumbled upon this channel and rly liking the first 1-2 vids, its tight and well thought out
a lot of times these videos tend to be bloated and long and it seems peeps loving it but i think one need to do the work prior to that and compress and think about it and then make a short tight quintessential video
i like those long videos from time to time but man you have a lot of games reviewed its gonna be nice to check it all out
That's why I prefer the Spartan Mode in the Redux version, it fixes almost every problem you stated. Redux is a great great game
the russian dialogues done very professionally, same people are used who did Stalker character voices. good review man. as always.
Was wanting you to review this
sonny jim,yes sir ..that intro is sick...
Whose here cause it’s free on steam?
YES
Bro I'm addicted to your reviews
One of the first PC games I've ever played! Hands down one of my most favorites series of all time!
Welp, you didn't just get Exodus, you got STALKER 2 as well.
How about that.
Man this guy is a BEAST of a Reviewer, Greetz From Holland man keep up the FRKN Good Work m8
+Taylan Demir Thanks mate!
not to mention, a remaster that actually significantly improves the game. Those metro remasters are genuinely the most beautiful games ive ever played, only rivaled by BF1 and Far Cry 5.
Glad you released this now. I just finished it and am now going through Metro Last Light.
Lack of bullets? Bring it on!
I have survived Dead Space so I'm immune to dying due to lack of resources
Any potential of a review of the MISERY mod for Call of Pripyat, what with the scary game vibe? It doesn't quite rework everything in CoP but it does add quite a bit of atmosphere and difficulty in a similar vein of Brutal Doom. Would be interesting to see your thoughts on it.
Regardless, great review, pretty happy you decided to touch on these games. Definitely some of my favorites.
+Blazer3136 Probably not. I don't like the STALKER games all that much.
Dude your my fav reviewer and the best 1 hands down keep it up
Thanks!
The stealth in last light was much more refined where you actually could stealth it up.
Have you ever played Kholat? First person wandering in the snow hunted by entities.
I got this & last light remastered for the PS4 pro for £3.74. I am playing with a pair of skullcandy crusher evo headphones that has sensory bass & haptic feedback. One of the best experiences I have ever had on console
Very true. Both brilliant games. I prefer Last Light but love both. They nailed the atmosphere.
@@_.-_Crimpy-_..-. games pretty boring to me
@@mayonnaise3959 Don’t play it then. Not sure why you’re telling me.
@@_.-_Crimpy-_..-. then how can I form a opinion on it? Stupid point
@@mayonnaise3959 You said it was pretty boring. I’d assumed you’d played it.
After a few false starts, I really got drawn deep into this game and it's everything gmanlives says it is. It's just simply a fantastic game.
That Plan 9 intro theme tho
Yes! I was hoping you would review this! Its one of my favourite games, im also a fan of the books. Have you played the second one, metro last light? The stealth actually works imo (i dont have too much experience with stealth games), you can go a lot quieter than the original. If you havent played it yet, you should
+SgtKolea Yeah I didn't like Last Light as much.
Great review man, One question are you going to review its sequel "Metro:Last light"?
i love your reviews man keep it up
I read the novel and damn it was a good read.I've played the game and I can say that... both are equal.I liked both.
I really miss the firing sounds in the original Metro 2033 that their sound can be echo through the tunnel where redux version do not have.
I heard that Plan 9 ost in use, hooked in Comrade.
Metro is great but the stealth is frustratingly terrible. Might as well not even be there
Hey G, you didn't mentioned 2 different endings and what you must do in-game to change them.
+2SSSR2 Yes I did, I talk about the morale points in the review, bro.
+Arsyan Sugiri There's plenty. Bioshock for instance, FEAR, Deus Ex HR, Wolfenstein TNO...
Gggmanlives Bioshock for soure!
It's like u knew i was thinking of buying this gamwe. This review arrived just in the nick of time
I had metro 2033 in my steam librabry for 4 years now but I couldn't bring myself to finish it.
Music from Plan 9 is a great touch.
(Overall though, playing a game eleven times says a lot about the game.)
do you plan on reviewing the chronicles of riddek games or maybe even timeshift. from what I remember they were half decent games.
+Colt Leblanc Yes to both.
+Gggmanlives sweet sounds good
Great review, and great game.
Duty (the rival faction) believes they must protect the world from the dangers of the zone
You, my friend, just seem to have the opinion of the duty faction.
+Juicy Hostage I'm playing it atm. It's like Condemned meets STALKER.
Gggmanlives That sounds pretty accurate alright
Gggman, did you know, that ukraine has some of the best FPS developers on the post-soviet ground? I would totally reccomend all games by "action forms", such as:
-- cryostasis: sleep of reason
-- vivisector: beast inside
-- chasm: the rift
And all of the carnivores series
As well as some hidden gems like "You are empty" (great level design and atmosphere)
"firestarter" (from gsc, developers of stalker)
Xenus (original and sequel were both way ahead of it's time)
And collapse (TPS, but, never the less, awesome)
It would be totally kickass to see reviews of those games on your channel someday.
As for this review, it was great, as always. I have felt as if i have actually completed the game, without playing it. will definetely check it out.
+Пётр Тенетко I'm playing through Cryostasis at the moment.
I will have to try this one out, I always wondered about it but never picked it up.Thanks for another good video.
you didn't talk about the 2 endings
and that the ending that you get depends on your play style and decisions throughout the game
I loved in Last Light how you could do so much stealth
Have you ever played the game called Pariah? I'd love to see your review of it
+Der Krazy Kraut I own it, not yet played it.
+Der Krazy Kraut Pariah's campaign is so freaking boring. Same boring firefights over and over and over again. I liked the level creator, but it was a little bland and missing a lot of features or objects. Also spent way too much time trying to get the land and the buildings to cooperate with each other.
The cheeki breeki is strong with this one
Thanks, this video just reminded me I have this stashed somewhere in my closet. Good game asides from ammo annoyances and what not. Definitely would've played this at least one more time but I got so many games sometimes it's a bit hard to catch up. Worse yet, I have a regular job so don't have as much time for gaming as I used to but now I got an urge to go dig this game outta my closet...
I like the art style of this much better than Redux. Seems like a lot of the characters were completely re-skinned for Redux, but they gave 'em a less gritty, more action-y feel.
I remember back then finishing this game with only 10 fps to 15 fps
Read the books by Dimitri Glukhovsky. They are amazing as well.
Also nice video btw, earned you a new sub :D
I have read the first and second book and they are amazing.
