I thought the same thing, just being stuck down there in that half generated city, walking on the sliver of grass with darkness below on each side, passing the occasional streetlight or tree...and looking up seeing that complete world above. Creepypasta material right there.
My comment from the NFSU2 Beta video: The city could actually be part of a "3D skybox". The Source engine uses a similar technique, where a backdrop exactly like this is placed somewhere in the world (outside the sky-sphere, usually on a smaller scale than the actual world), with an entity in the center indicating where the center of the world or map would be inside that backdrop. The backdrop is then rendered onto the playable world. This can save a lot of hardware resources. If you noclip around in the maps of Source games you are very likely to find one of those miniature backdrops.
Yeah, lots of people have been commenting that. And quite frankly, it wouldn't surprise me anyhow. The only part that is interesting about this city. In order to access it using the debug camera we had to edit the game's render zones, because otherwise everything disappears when you leave the area of one.
actually most of this looks like what you can see when you're in different areas of the map. for example the city core parts can be seen from bayview and so on.
Wow its very neat to see people still playing this game in 2017. One of my favorite games of all time. Its so cool to discover secrets like that in games that came out so long ago. It keeps the game alive!! Thank you so much for making this video. I hope lots of people see this and become inspired to dust off that old CD and slap it into their console.
You honestly have made me so happy uploading this. I can still remember playing this game online and people talking about this “mystery city” and stuff and god damn was it nostalgic feeling. Thank you for this.
I really, really love watching this kind of videos. There's one thing which new games lack - such hidden places, bugs or similar stuff. Those things make the game great, enjoyable and a little bit mysterious. I love playing games from the early 2000s, be it GTA or NFS. They have that amazing feeling to them that new games will never have sadly. PS: Recently downloaded NFS u, U2, MW, Carbon, GTA III, VC, SA on my PC. Gonna copy everything to my flash drive so I can play those games forever. :)
still want hard copies of the PC versions of those games (prices of MW BE and Carbon CE are getting pricey though :( ). Only reason why I still keep a BR / DVD drive on modern PC builds is to watch old DVDs and play PC ports of old games or to use CD capable emulators to play old console games.
Have you ever played valve games like Garrys mod, CS GO or HL2? for background of city, they put them far away from the map and it looks bigger in the main city. if u successfully go to that ghost city with car, your car will look giant for players in main city. And they will also see you in main city u r in ghost town tho
That is actually very interesting. That is something I would actually want to try online with friends somehow or using the camera hack. Thanks for that, I might actually look into that.
hockeyguy731 where did you get this version of cam-hack? the fact that I have a Russian version of the game, and this cheat on the camera does not work + I have a laptop.
I dont know why but there is a second map closer to the map here in game, basically is in the 3rd part we unlock from the map and when you go to where it ends in the map you can see a map that cant be reached and it literally shows a little of a race there
On the ps2 version the water and this miniature are even more visible and the city also has lights turned on. This make me think that maybe this miniature could just be a very old trick to replicate water reflections. This trick was used in GTA 3 aswell in the second island. You can find a tower with a little lake next to it and its reflection in the water is actually a copy of that tower but under the map. The problem on PC is that water looks unexisting and this miniature doesn't even have lights on. So, thanks to this bug, it only look like a cut content outside the game boundaries.
@Paul Yeah that seems to be the case. Maybe they didnt want the game to lag as you left Jackson Heights, or it was meant be shown on top of the "Citi lights" texture so it looks more detailed when you view bayview from Jackson Heights.
Thank you for the published archive with the game world files ... but I still can't figure out what "Outskirts City Core" and "Outskirts Coal Harbor"are for?
I found a file in the TRACKS folder called PrecullerBooBooScript.hoo I opened it with a hex editor (HxD) and I see a bunch of lines with 'angle' and 'pos' in them (position) so I assume it's something to do with the loading of textures at certain angles and positions in the map. I found it because I heard that textures loading in certain places is called culling. I don't know how to edit the file though, and if it definitely is the right one, because I deleted it - the render regions were the same - and then set all values to 0 - and again, same rendering. So I'm not sure. Note that I have no experience in modding games or anything like this.
Very cool, thanks. I'll look if I can see it in the distance from my game :D One question: From the other side of the Jackson Heights, you can see lights and illuminated street patterns and they stretch very wide, do you know something about that or so?
hockeyguy731 everytime I played the game I was wondering about this :) this "area" is huuuge (also the backside looks interesting, behind and around the red transmitter mast, or whatever this thing is)
i have a question man. there is a place in brad lawless memorial park its like a map glitch. i mean you can see a smal circle road in the map but actually there is no way to there
do you have modified the textures/shader? normally the textures aren't loading when I try to get to the city with debug camera. It's very interesting and I wish I can get to the ghost city too :)
Can you show us the ps2 demo version??? If it exists there, it means that it could be a renderzone OR the race world. The race world is where races that don't fit into the freeroam world are placed ex. Bayview bridge drag and drift races, those buildings there are the backdrop to those races which is different from the freeroam world just that you wouldn't spot these differences if you were casually playing the game so to prove this we would NEED to see the ps2 demo version.
Do you still know how to do this? I have no idea how to edit the render zones and the only way I would be able to find out is if you (or someone else) could help me.. I'd love to check this out for myself, as I've found some similarities between this 'city' and the Industrial Park scenery
sorry for the dumb question, but i want that debug camera to take some really good photos of the entire bayview, but in the moment of press the button to enable the debug camera the game crashes,¿why the game does that?
Imagine living in that city and just seeing a inaccessible world above you. That would be insane

@hockeyguy731,
I'm very curious about this, what file stores those render zones?
actually most of this looks like what you can see when you're in different areas of the map. for example the city core parts can be seen from bayview and so on.
Valve used this tehnique for their games as well
I saw one on dust2 in CSS

Gilbernata i play it in 2018 :D
anyone still play in 2018 after 14 years???
2018 :)
I rather play NFSU 1, 2, MW and Carbon then playing ProStreet.
Im playing it now in 2020 and quite possibly 2021
You honestly have made me so happy uploading this. I can still remember playing this game online and people talking about this “mystery city” and stuff and god damn was it nostalgic feeling. Thank you for this.
is this not the skybox? the source engine uses something like this
i did come from youtube recommend (the first video on my homepage!);
nice to revisit old times of need for speed secrets - mico

I have always wanted to see this city! dope vid
So, skybox?
I've been near this "Mystery City" too, actually inside it and i can honestly tell EA just placed some models from Bayview there for testing purposes.
How?
ok, now i can sleep peacefully...

It´s also in Splinter Cell 1, there is a test room in every level.
I swear I won't be able to sleep at night after watching that view of the half built city and the main world above it, just floating in limbo
Happy 20th Anniversary, Underground 2!!!
This discovery is worth a thunbs up. Great job! Love the game.
KEEP ON PLAYIN' OUR FAVORITE SONG...

Do you still have a working disc?
Maybe you can upload the files so that we can play it
isn't it possible that it's a low poly copy to replace parts of the city that are far away? (ie core when viewed from jackson heights etc)
@Paul Yes it's true. When the game is located in City Core, Beacon Hill or Coal Harbor, this city is not displayed.
@Paul Yeah that seems to be the case. Maybe they didnt want the game to lag as you left Jackson Heights, or it was meant be shown on top of the "Citi lights" texture so it looks more detailed when you view bayview from Jackson Heights.
That Map looks somewhat similar to Silverton in palmont city.
Thank you for the published archive with the game world files ... but I still can't figure out what "Outskirts City Core" and "Outskirts Coal Harbor"are for?
The textures on the outskirts of the city change slightly with these render zones. Very minor differences though.
I'm looking inside the EXE, but I have no idea what _FX file it is (if any)
or how to edit/remove them for that matter 😐
I found a file in the TRACKS folder called PrecullerBooBooScript.hoo

2:08 ufo attacked bayview
ENELO
0:15 maybe it’s rock port
Very cool, thanks. I'll look if I can see it in the distance from my game :D
One question: From the other side of the Jackson Heights, you can see lights and illuminated street patterns and they stretch very wide, do you know something about that or so?
I have noticed those, although I have not investigated those in great detail.
hockeyguy731 everytime I played the game I was wondering about this :) this "area" is huuuge (also the backside looks interesting, behind and around the red transmitter mast, or whatever this thing is)
Yeah, there is lots of interesting details. Perhaps sometime in the near future we can look in great detail and examine them all.
hockeyguy731 sounds great
i have a question man. there is a place in brad lawless memorial park its like a map glitch. i mean you can see a smal circle road in the map but actually there is no way to there
this is a secret place in uncoming nfs underground 3,she must be support of Windows XP
Best street racing simulator ever!!!! I love this, and if I could live in any video game or simulator, it would be this!!
do you have modified the textures/shader? normally the textures aren't loading when I try to get to the city with debug camera. It's very interesting and I wish I can get to the ghost city too :)
Turning off motion blur would've been a good idea. Aside from that, amazing video :)
Can you show us the ps2 demo version??? If it exists there, it means that it could be a renderzone OR the race world. josemanueldsj 49 It is not the race world because that stuff is stored in another file.
hockeyguy731 :| oh...
it's probably just for loading assets or something
hello I have heard you discovered how to render the ghost city from underground 2 can you do the same for the mystery city in Carbon plz?
Seems like konigsseg has stopped making the videos and also has deleted his previous ones
you're awesome man thank you for all the vids
It looks like the mystery city from nfsc in lookout point the beta scenery one with the Lancer Evo
very interesting thank you that you try to find out the secrets of this old game
Or it's a miniature of Bayview or it's rockport. But the more plausible is that is a miniature of bayview
Город-призрак
Do you still know how to do this? I have no idea how to edit the render zones and the only way I would be able to find out is if you (or someone else) could help me..
I'd love to check this out for myself, as I've found some similarities between this 'city' and the Industrial Park scenery
Still looking D:
Still.
.
@@aenoofficial and he never revealed it :(
@@JukoYT :/
amazing work. thank you!
is there anyway to restore this mystery city and have it connected to the main city of bayview ?
Nice find!
Oh, that's so nice, thanks:)!
sorry for the dumb question, but i want that debug camera to take some really good photos of the entire bayview, but in the moment of press the button to enable the debug camera the game crashes,¿why the game does that?
I have no idea, but moving position can fix it temporarily
It's not the skybox?
oh it turns out it's not a ghost town but a fabricating game texture. l don't know.
Qual é o nome do mod??????????????????????? dono do canal eu não sei mais o nome do seu canal
Looks like a city for developers
but how do you fly, how to repeat?
