  • What do labour rights have to do with secondhand fashion? It turns out, a lot. In today’s episode, we talk to Emily Stochl, host of the Pre-Loved Podcast on labour rights activism and how it informs the secondhand market and our secondhand shopping consumption habits. One of our favourite takeaways from this episode is Emily’s encouragement to see ourselves as citizens rather than just consumers to advocate for systemic change. We discuss topics like a living wage, unlearning our traditional views about sustainable fashion, and vintage resellers. Thank you Emily for joining us!

Great episode! I think on a personal level we're battling the cognitive dissonance between messages that we are hearing. We hear about enclothed cognition and how what we wear Influences our own confidence and the messages communicate to others and showing up for ourselves with what we wear. We don't want to be outdated, not modern, not trendy. We don't want to look frumpy and old and yet those are often the pieces that we find when we're thrift shopping. And yet at the same time we don't want to fill our closets with brand new fast fashion either. We're told not to settle for just any old garment but to pick something that fits and flatters and can stand the test of time. It's okay to go thrift shopping and only find one or nothing since it's really just a treasure hunt. What to do? We're told to tailor the old pieces that we love when we lose or gain weight and yet that's exponentially more expensive than buying new. Should we hang on to old garments that show signs of wear because we don't want it going into a landfill? For me there's no easy answer to these questions, and I'm being forced to deal with it because after losing 25 pounds I have nothing to wear literally.

I’m 59 and have lost 35 pounds in the last 2 years, I’m also a thrifter for 37 years with a highly curated wardrobe. Choose the best quality pieces you can find secondhand and yes new things too, that align with your lifestyle and values plus the vibes you want to feel. This takes time to build but if you start with basic things it does start to take shape and evolve, things like medium wash denim that fits, simple long and shortsleeved T-shirts, a classic button up in white or even denim if that’s your jam, etc. The conversations around wardrobe, sustainability, etc are nuanced and complicated but if you’re personally making an effort, the path does become clearer and along the way you can have the opportunity to learn but also influence others 😊

@@lauriejohnson-daley3753 Thank you for your thoughtful comment! Thank you for sharing. I've been a thrift shopper all my life. During the fall and winter, I went once a week knowing that I would have nothing to wear in the summer and searching for those pieces to get me through. I did accumulate some nice pieces, enough to create a small capsule summer wardrobe. However when the time came I didn't have enough to make outfits and with 6 months of summer ahead, I just had to buy new pieces. I did get some fast fashion pieces just due to cost. Mainly cotton Tops and Dresses. I'm doing a lot of outfit repeating so far but it's working thankfully. Hopefully these clothes will work for me for years to come because I try to buy timeless looking pieces. I told myself that I could add to it slowly over time if I maintain this weight.

@@pajamamama5965 it’s the effort we make and recognizing what we feel the best in that really starts to get us on the right path and you sound like you are getting there. I don’t believe the hard and true basic pieces are what works for “everyone”, for example a white Tshirt isn’t a priority for me, but learning to buy solid colours in simpler styles helped me make more outfits, with fewer pieces. Good luck and just try to have fun in the process! 👗

@@lauriejohnson-daley3753 Thank you so much! It is fun learning about our style and what looks good on our body type and coloring. That's true for me too I'm not a fan of a white T-shirt because I find I've stained them too easily LOL. But I did like you said and got a couple of solid color tops that I've used to mix and match and that's been fun. I didn't want to invest a lot of money in this clothing size because eventually I could still stand to lose 15 more pounds. Actually I've been surprised how much effort it has taken to put together enough outfits that check all the boxes. At least I figured out my best neutrals are navy, black and denim. That has simplified my shopping experience tremendously.

What sticks with me is how we have devaluated our clothing. Where clothes used to be a sign of selfworth, selftrust and maybe even a sign of wealth, it’s now become a throw away thing that you wear just once or twice. I buy both new and second hand, but when I buy new, I really think about what I really need to fill a gap in my wardrobe. And I believe in dressing for your bodytype, because items that fit well and drape nicely over my body are the items I want to wear over and over again until they fall apart. That and knowing my colors has decreased shopping mistakes by a lot! The clothes I own are all loved and worn ❤

As,some trained as a trade and environmental economist, I think that people working together to get legislation passed that requires environmental and true labor costs (health issues, wages…) imbedded into cost of products is important (not just carbon offset). Yes, clothing costs will go up but the difference in price between low and better quality will less dramatic. Prices will go up, but I don’t think that is a bad thing, it will reduce production of a lot of cheap things. Domestically it can be through laws. Internationally I think it needed to be a new round of trade negotiations.
