    I knew a guy (this was in like 2006) who had an '88 civic. He marveled at the fact that it still had the original battery and that it would launch in 2nd gear with no complaints. He loved that car more than I've ever seen anybody love anything.

    I just bought an 82 second gen Accord hatch with a five speed and I’m loving it so far! It’s even slower than the one featured but you can hold your foot to the floor and never break the law! All while getting at least 28 mpg ;)

    Ah the video that brought me to your channel. I had an 89 Accord LXi Sedan at the time! It was bad.
    Ironically, I had a second gen Plymouth after that which was also bad.
    It's funny you mention that it's a good first car, as it wasn't my first car but it WAS my backup car when my Cadillac was inevitably broken. Of course, that meant the Honda was upset for some reason and would fail to start. It was hideously expensive to maintain! $40 air filter and it was behind the engine, an hour long job.

      I've worked on alot lately, the only problem they have is after 500k the engines are just too worn out and you loose compression, cheap and reliable will never be done like Honda did it then.

    I am 40yrs old. The third generation Honda Accords were phenomenal compared to domestic offerings. Hell, the double wishbone suspension was almost exotic compared to contemporary offerings.

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1 4 роки тому +2

      Yeah, and if you look at it on paper in 1987 you could get a Yugo GVX which was faster, had more features, and cost less than half as much. Independent rear suspension, 5 speed manual, optional air conditioning and electric sunroof/cabrio top. Optional automatic, digital preset cassette stereo. Most third gen Accords didn't even leave the factory with air conditioning.
      That doesn't make it a particularly good car.
      I had a 1989 Honda Accord LXi Sedan for all of about a year. It was in great shape mechanically but it was an ugly little sucker. In the end I traded it away because it was slower than my Cadillac, got the same highway mileage because of it's poorly chosen ratios in the automatic gearbox, and because it was more expensive for me to keep around than two 90s Cadillacs *combined*. Damn if it didn't start every time, even with an almost dead battery, and that every single thing on it worked, but it was dangerously slow, even with the 2 liter fuel injected engine.
      On my channel is a 0-60 of that very same car, it's bordering on 14 seconds to get there, and it doesn't shift until I'm at about 61 anyways. Trying to fit a dead stop to highway speed into *one* gear was a huge mistake and it made the car almost undrivable.

    You call them disappointments, I call them perks. That wishbone suspension was revolutionary at the time. I love the simplicity of that gen of Honda. This is before they started throwing all of the stupid sensors in cars

    I have a 1989 Honda Prelude Si with 4WS. It's by far the best car I've owned. Reliable, pretty fun to drive, DOHC with 135 HP (for an old car with a 4 cylinder it's not terrible lmao), parallel parking is a breeze with the 4WS, visibility is amazing, and the pop-ups are cool :)

    The first car I bought was an 89 Civic sedan (manual), bottom of the line, for $500 from my friend, who got it from his sister who got it from... Good car. Pity it died when I got in an accident while trying to adjust the treble on the radio. RIP, little civic. And I had _JUST_ gotten the clutch replaced, too...

    Same reason I bought my cars. My toyota pickup is an 84 and my volvo 240 is a 93. People drove both of these back in the day. Neither are my first cars. I'm about 18 now. They're both easy to fix, I know cause I regularly work on both. I know a couple people that have these accord hatchbacks. Mostly other car people in my neighborhood

    My dad had a red 87 Accord LX-i coupe til 2001 and loved it. Only got rid of it because they had more kids. Last year my brother bought an 88 Accord LX-i coupe on Craigslist - exactly the same as my dad's, only one year newer, black, and in terrible cosmetic condition. It has been sitting for eight months because of shot motor mounts, missing bolts in the drum assemblies, leaking fluids, burning oil, and other such minor concerns - but it started right up with a new battery. I have odd affection for that car, despite the fact it is objectively a piece of junk.

    Seriously, get a hold of a late 80's dodge omni 2.2 and 5 speed. The tbi cars were better than the carbed cars. They are a blast to drive. Its like a phone booth on top of a go kart. I had a fleet of them years ago when I delivered pizza in Rolla. Even more fun was studded snow tires on the front end (only) in a good snow. Heading down (Pine?) from TJ hall with a couple inches of ice on the road was a hoot. The only way to not die was just to keep in the gas and row gears. Ahhh good times!

  • @Ayeobe
    @Ayeobe 3 роки тому

    ...i get that you maybe drove V8 power whatever cars but from the sound of things you have not gotten much higher than like 80km/h...thats not where these cars become interesting, really. You can take a pretty sharp bend at ludecrous speeds in these, but the base model Hatch isnt the place to start doing that, with no rear sway bars and 185/70R13 rubber.
    There are some things all those Accords have, and thats the lowest damn hoodline of anything that isnt a dedicated race car (or a 3rd gen Prelude)
    Also, the manual is not cable shift. its shifted by rods. Its much more interesting than any newer car for that.
    Try the 1988-89 injected models, you will find a night and day diffrence... even if its only because of the tires and suspension.
