My parents owned a used 1983 MG1600 identical to the one in the brochure (ERW 333Y). They were big fans of the Maestro. Adequately powerful for their needs.

Hi , I had a few rides and drives of the Maestro but never owned one,I don't know why they are a good car. It replaced the Maxi being a 5 door hatchback but also the Allegro, When the Maxi came in the late 60's it was ahead of it's time, Front wheel drive ,5-door hatch back and a 5-speed manual gear box. jump to 1983 the new Maestro went backwards by introducing a 4-speed gear box I don't know why Austin done that. When I was a teenager I my neighbour getting a Maestro 1.6L in 1983 ( Y-reg ) in red my neigbour sold his V -reg Astra 1.3 he said at the time first car to have a 5 speed gearbox so the 1.6 had a 5 speed I don't think made a 1.6 4 speed. I have driven a 1985-86 (C-reg) 1.3 HLS 4-speed noisy at 70mph to high revving about 4700rpm ,the 1.3L and 1.3 HLS did came with a 5-speed gearbox from 1987 and I have driven a Meastro 1.3 van 5 speed 1989 ( F-reg ) a good van. The Maestro in 1983 and in 1984 the Montego the 4 and 5 speed gearboxes were made by Volkswagon the same one's fitted to the Passat , Golf ,Polo and Sirocco , It was a British car with a German gearbox but it worked well. Thank's for this video on the Maestro it was a part of my 1980's life take care😀🚗👍

I had a 1.6 HLS auto in the early 90s. It was a lovely looking car with darkish red metallic paint and twin door mirrors finished in what looked like brushed stainless steel. It was spacious, comfortable and lively. Good auto box - which I think was VW?

I'd of had the later Vanden Plas, in Moonraker blue metallic with grey leather interior.

I always liked the Styling on the Maestro/Montego, couldn't understand why people slated them so much (although I suspect if it wore a VW badge, there would have been no complaints)

Annoys me when a car broucher state a 0-50mph acceleration time. Its like they are trying to disguise the average performance of the engine.

Base models were driven mainly by women on short shopping trips. No long distane driver would put up with such inferior comfort and performance.

I owned an 86 MG 2.0i in Moonraker blue, I wonder if that became an option later (I also had an 87 2.0i in Monza Red)
