  • In this video I give a short tour and test drive of a 2003 Toyota Highlander. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this suv while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I show the suv idling as well as take it on a thorough test drive through the city and highway on various surfaces. A thorough drive of this suv designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

As much as people say that highlanders are boring they just have the nicest blend of comfort, convinience and utility.

I have a 2003 Toyota Kluger (Aussie market highlander) with the 7 seats and the 3.3L V6.
I'ts got around 335,000 kms and it is possibly one of my favourite cars I've owned.
It is very quiet compared to the car in the video. It's also much more spritely.
I haven't once driven this car and not loved it.
I bought poorly, within weeks I had so much to fix. New brakes and rotors. front control arms. oxygen sensors. wheel bearings. rear bushes. front and rear struts. camcover seals. full set of tyres, as they weren't the right rating for the mass of the car.
I've spent over a year fixing all these things myself, the parts cost approx. $3000 AUD and I bought at around $5500 AUD, but equal models were only available from around $9000 AUD, so I came out in front.
Amazing cars. I've found them very easy to work on, great to drive and absolutely tough.
The only thing I wish I could change would be the fuel consumption of around 13L/100km or 18MPG.
I live in a hilly, rural area with many poor quality dirt roads. It makes them feel like much better roads, and the higher fuel consumption rates are a price I am willing to pay to drive a car that I absolutely would buy again. even at 20yrs old.

This cast is a tank. I have an 01 highlander 4 cylinder like the one in the video. Personally i prefer i 4 cylinder over the 6 because of gas, i can fix things myself, maintenace will be a lil cheaper. And u can still go fast on the freeway.yeah it'll take longer.but once you're there at 70 you're staying there for awhile.
Mine is at 250,570 right now. And i got so many things changed so it can keep going longer. New struts, just changed the transmission fluid, brakes, coolant, fuel injectors. Personally i changed the spark plugs & valve cover gasket which cost me a good 50$ for the parts.
      Like i said it's a tank.

I have a 2003 with 2004 headlights. Just broke 100k miles in it. Literally looks brand new still. Was owned by an older lady before I bought it. Still has the window sticker and all the maintenance records. Same exact color as the one in the video. I have the AWD V6 and I prefer the V6 because it has much more pep, and the gas mileage isn’t that much different. Just changed the transmission fluid and filter (5qrts) and the thermostat and lower radiator hose. Going to change the timing belt, and water pump soon, and then she should be good for another 100k mules, easy. Love the truck

well i found a one owner all highway kilometers (268,000) i paid roughly $6500, but now that i look back at my purchase it wasn't the best overall decision, fuel mileage was poor, minor electronic malfunctions, but always ran fine, LOVED the high-beams at nighttime.
I sold it a while ago, now have my 2003 Honda Civic - have owned the civic for 3 years and its been the best overall vehicle i've ever owned, anyways i'm just going on and on. lol.

I have this car 2001. It was a "hand me down" basically BUT I love it. 4 cylinder, so I can be my own mechanic & do my own maintenance like oil changes, filter changes, power steering fluid, spark plugs, coolant & more.
Sure the radio & CD does suck & skip, BUT just buy the radio adapter bluetooth thing that connects to ur phone. So whatever music your phone has, its bluetooth to the car. Just take it off when you're not driving.
I'm now taking care of both the 01 highlander & a 97 Rav4 as well.

I know I am commenting on a yt video that is 12 years old but my mom actually owned a Toyota Highlander that rode on Toyota's K platform however I am not sure which engine her Highlander had however she did have it for a number of years and if you know anything about Yotas they are super reliable but she sold it in 2007 because she needed a bigger vehicle and me and my siblings grew out of the car seats so she bought a brand new 2007 GMC Yukon XL and after 172,000ish miles and a new engine about 8,000 miles ago it's still running strong!

Those 2.4L around that era were somewhat notorious for head bolts stripping around 100k, causing the head gasket to fail and drink coolant. Otherwise a great overall vehicle.

@DeMitch it appears as if the head gasket issue is with the 2az-fe (2.4 four cylinder) for around 2001 to 2004 & early 2005, and also with any other car that had that motor in it at the time, like the Camry or Rav 4, the Highlander did have the v6, 3.0 or 3.3 depending on the year, the 3.3 was later on. I own a 2.4, but I'd rather have the v6. It's been great so far, minus 2 water pumps within 25,000 miles, also a known issue, but I'm just waiting for my head issue. Not if, but when...

It looks like it has a driver's floor mat from another vehicle (predrilled hole not fitting in the floor post, it looks too small and is sliding all over the place.) I guess a mat from a car with over 125,000 miles probbably has a heel hole and a seller would want to remove it, but I bet the dealer's lawer probably says don't put in a subsititute from another car.

Our 2003 has 135k on it. It has become sluggish taking more pedal and time to reach 60mph. Used about 10 gas additive cleaners with some very little success. Any ideas? Idle is perfect, so I have not changed spark plugs, my first thought. Thanks for any commnets.

I was in my friend's Highlander every day for school last year, a black '04 with the same four-cylinder. Quiet car with a pretty good ride, but the engine was annoyingly buzzy and the exhaust didn't help much, which kinda ruined it. I'm interested to see if the V6 is any different in terms of noise, though.
