It's mostly Nigerians who are close to or have connections to the Top that advocate to stay in Nigeria.
Team Japa here. Once you realize that the world is your oyster, you have to look at what society gives you the best opportunity to strive the most.
That is why a lot of professionals leave. The opportunities are limited because society is designed against normal people who dont have "connections." That is the challenge.
Aliyu Audu you're not being honest. In 2003-2007 so many Nigerian graduates were employed in banking with a decent starting salary of 150k. Many Nigerians who went to the UK for masters took up security jobs and were making equivalent of 300k in Naira.
From 2008, 80% of these bankers were fired and have been suffering since. All of these thanks to corruption and mismanagement at the top. Many of these bankers could have japa'd when they had a good job but they had faith in the Nigerian economy.
Their mates that went to the UK have achieved a lot over the years and many of them have moved up from security jobs to white collar jobs all thanks to a stable and prosperous society that they found themselves in.
Nigerians are seeing that if you japa you're better off financially than 95% of your mates in Nigeria even if you end up as a security guard abroad. This is the reason why people are leaving Nigeria

Since I relocated to the US, my quality of life has massively improved!. Access to healthcare, the economic infrastructure here support my personal and professional growth, yes, I also make more money!. I love my home country and miss her always o, but I can't trade my wellbeing for sentimental reason of "loving my homeland".
Exactly. I feel we downplay that people just want to be people. Most people relocate because of the possibility of social mobility in the country they emigrate to. Better quality of life as well. Not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur or fight tooth and nail just to have food on the table. Some people just want a decent job and live an average life, which is far fetched for many Nigerians. There's just so much sentiment in these debates.
All the lady in red is talking about is money, money, money. The reasons why people relocate is beyond only money and cheques. If I may ask can you take a walk out of your homes at 12midnight or travel from North to South by road?
She does not come across as deep, or having a proper understanding of issues.

This is a very interesting and controversial topic , but listening to Temitope, Aliyu, Adeyemi and JJ, you will be able to draw a contrast between the intelligence and intellectual of the ones living abroad and the ones living in Nigeria. Let’s not forget that Nigerians abroad are the ones keeping Nigeria economy on life support with an estimated $8 billion dollars remittance in 8 years.

A Nigerian immigrant in the US here. My take is, if you think you stand a chance to progress your career abroad, please do so. There are pros and cons to Japa-ing. Living abroad is not all that glamorous except you make a lot of money. Most people abroad live from paycheck to paycheck. If you are comfortable in NIgeria, if you make good money over there, it's best to stay. Integrating abroad is also no joke. No matter what level you had risen to in Nigeria, when you relocate it's like hitting a "reset" button. You literally have to rebuild your career. Most important thing, do what makes you happy.
Nigerians should stop chasing money and get productive. Nigeria is blessed with everything. Money can’t solve anything unless Nigeria get productive.

You can’t imagine in Ondo State, about Four Magistrates resigned and relocated abroad in 2022, what does that says to you. Can you blame them for their actions? If a Magistrate could work for 12-15 years without having an official car, some of them rides Okada to the court to deliver their assignments, how humiliating! I stand to be challenged on this my assertions or you guys can verify this position.
I’m sure those magistrates are regretting leaving Nigeria. They should be the ones who are supposed to be fighting for the country. It’s a damn shame! Life is not easy for most Nigerians abroad. Stop lying to Nigerians and making people believe that once you get abroad all your problems are solved. Nigerians should stop chasing money and get productive. Farm and keep animals/ chickens for eggs. This is what many Europeans do. Save money and stop wasting money unnecessarily. Most importantly stop wasting money building useless unpractical houses in villages. Or waste money on extravagant weddings and burials.

Many would have loved to come back home to established and make impact but fir sevurity and enabling environment and instability of the foreing exchange markets makes it difficult .

What brand of car do you produce? What product do you make at all? Do you think the better countries people run to would be there today if their people didn't face their problems with commitment to solve them. I think what the real problem is is that the average Nigerian only thinks of what he can get by taking what's available rather than getting from what he would contribute.

In all honesty, I really love this episode. All participants really did justice and have their personal reasons to stay back or japa. I would talk as a person who currently work in UK as a Nurse. I see Nigeria as a better place to live. I am only here for the time being in other to secured money to start up a business back at home. Many just don't understand that Nigeria is viable for enterprenuers to make it. But anyways, it is all subjective. Good luck to everyone.

I left Nigeria in 2021 and will be returning back home in 2024 after studying Master's in Fintech in the UK, working and understanding that Abroad life is a way to mentally slave many colonized continents including Nigeria Professional.
We must be ready to learn their model and return back home like Chinese citizens.

As a Nigerian abroad....i did not japa oohh. I really went to study.....i left in the year 2000.
My plan was to go back.....and i ended up changing my mind. I miss Nigeria.....but one can not have everything.
It is either one chooses to stay with the good life but family members far away or you go back and stay close to family members back home...but living in pure hardship.

There is a good chance that those buying land right now, also sold land to facilitate their trips abroad. They are basically replacing what they sold in the first place.

Some people call Nigeria a zoo, for me i think it is more like a jungle. A country where you don't have emergency number to dial when you a medical emergency or your life is danger. I Japa'd since I was 6yrs old... Living in America (USA) since then, but I visit Nigeria once every year.
Like the lady said, we are our own problems, we all had a bad behavior in our country before japaing, but when we get to foreign countries, we change our behaviors to adapt to a normal behavior. We celebrate crooks and criminals, we smile while sufferings, we are scared to die for standing up against injustice, but still die due to injustice.

A lot of people wanna (sapa), but they can't. Being overseas; you pay so many bills, you can't save enough money, so you live hand to mouth, you get so bunked down, not enough money to come back home and start a business so you are stuck in japa.
Over the years i have witnessed many people who relocated back home to set up a business only to come back abroad after some years just to find out that the ones they left here have moved on.
Your conclusion is for those who have no plans for their lives while they were in Nigeria. If you have a set goal for your life, you can start anywhere abroad, go back to school, develop your career, then you can be sure that your development will be appreciated. Your children will get better education; families left unproductive by our government back home, we restore back to life through our funding and supports. If you consider the amount of diaspora repatriations to Nigeria to give life to the already battered economy.
Those people who come back frustrated as you’ve only seen of the outcome of your japa’s story are those who didn’t properly utilize their transitional period. Just as I know those we left home impoverished and we still support after squandering numerous opportunities offered.
