The title of episode 8 only being revealed at the very end, with the card showing up saying "Frieren the Slayer" (which in Japanese is the same as the series title, just read in a different way) is such a cool thing. Most shows would've just put it in the beginning of the episode, spoiling the cool reveal, but they didn't and it adds so much
“Sousou no Frieren” is the original name of the manga. It can be translated more accurately into English as either “Frieren the Slayer” or “Frieren at the Funeral.”
Or rather Frieren the Pyschopomt
To address your question of why Lügner didn't recognize Frieren when they met face to face: I think it's because demons don't put any stock in physical appearance. Their own appearances are inherently deceptive, designed to fool humans, so it makes sense that they wouldn't rely on physical appearance to recognize someone. Instead, they would probably rely on... mana and spells. And Lügner definitely recognized Frieren's modified Zoltraak spell, even if Fern was the one casting it.
I thought maybe she was just a legend to Lugner, and he didn't know how she looked.
@@TylertheFancy Lügner specifically said that he recognized Fern's spells because he had "been struck by that same magic once before." He has definitely had a good look at Frieren in the past. Linie has probably also seen Frieren, since we know she has witnessed Eisen's fighting style.
@@TylertheFancy would you recognize a cow or a pig some years later? for them humans are food. even a boar that might have killed some one close to you, might not be recogniceable a few years later for you.
for them humans and elves might all look the same.
@@SHeshi-zc7crI can imagine Lugner saw Frieren like a chicken who blast a Godzilla beam through his arm. He didn't remember how the chicken look but damn that beam stamped to his mind
Lugner saw Frieren at night with the moon behind her, so recognizing her face in daylight 80 years in the future ought to be challenging.
I honestly would’ve LOVED to see more of Linnie’s power. It seems so interesting. Imagine if an ally would’ve had that, like- sounds op somewhat
Frieren definitely mixes up the episode vibes. You get some very action-heavy episodes, and then episodes where the focus is just finding some flower seeds or a lost ring. I can see why anime fans who want action every episode sometimes don't like it, but I really enjoy the mix of slice of life, drama, and action. I also think there's some parallels between Frieren and Saitama. Like, we're never really worried that Frieren is going to lose a fight, so instead her fights often serve some other narrative purpose: explaining how human magic is evolving, giving backstory about her training, or supporting the growth of apprentices (or even casual mentees). It's nice because it provides opportunities for Stark or Fern (or really whoever she is with) to develop their skills and/or shine. Though we do see that Stark's biggest problem is still his insecurities about his own skills. He was scared of fighting the dragon and only fought defensively against Linie because he doesn't have faith in himself (though that does slowly start to change a little after this episode). But Frieren clearly expects Fern and Stark to defeat the demons in town.
i love how the dub changes the complete mood of the show. refreshing to see/listen.
The fight between Linnie and Stark I think is excellent, because it shows how smart the writers are with subtle things. Every time Linnie summons the axe she has to twirl it to stop it hitting the ground to control its momentum, Stark doesn't. She can copy Eisen's style but she doesnt transform into a 300lb dwarf of pure muscle. Being a demon she is stronger than an 80lb girl would be but... she isn't super strong. If she had been using the sword style at the end, she would of killed Stark by running him through but... she wasn't. Stark baited her into doing the weakest swing with a great axe, dominant arm as the pivot, blade on the ground and swinging up against gravity. Exploiting her weaker strength, while he traded with a wind up downward swing which is probably one of the strongest with a heavy ended weapon. Same way having Mike Tyson's fighting style downloaded into your brain wouldn't give you his power, only his technique. Just... really smart writing.
"Frieren The Slayer" resulted in a ton of Doomguy/Frieren crossover fanart, and it's the best thing.
Fun fact! In the Japanese version, the literal translation to what Frieren says after defeating Draht (the guy in the dungeon) is “one down,” but the kanji that’s used in the manga is the kanji used for counting livestock, not people. (No clue how to make my keyboard make that symbol.) Really drives the point home that Frieren considers demons as animals as opposed to real people.
It's no spell, Freiren used raw mana to kill the deamon in the cell. In a way, each deamon seems to develop magic in their own personal way, more insight in this matter will be revealed eventually.
12:00 When Heiter asked Frieren to take Fern on as an apprentice, she refused, stating that she had to draw the line by refusing Heiter's request as Fern would only slow her down and get herself killed. We can surmise that after the 4 years she spent deciphering Heiter's grimoire and training Fern, that Fern had reached a level where these two points were no longer true. More than that though, in a flashback this episode, we learn that Fern is taking on fights on her own, and that by Frieren's estimation, those fights end faster because Fern is faster at spellcasting.
Frieren is basically telling them that they don't need training wheels. Yeah, the demons are powerful. SO ARE YOU. Now excuse me while I deal with the demon that is actually a danger to y'all.
Fern looked shocked because she realized Lugner was lying to her (go figure) about what he was saying about meaning to kill her instantly. She later explains this.
Glad you guys are enjoying this show! Just finished it a few days ago. Loved it front to back!
If your schedule might be too crazy for two episodes, feel free to just drop Episode 10 by itself. Two reasons:
*You want it, trust me.
*Only way to avoid a riot if you cannot do two.
Love your reactions to Frieren’s absolute absurdity XD. 10/10 No Notes ❤
Fern: " so i upcast magic misslie to 9th lvl, than activate action surge and cast another 8th lvl magic missile!"
Yall should have put episode 10 in this. The most hype yet.
Patience is a virtue.
@@Scarabswarman over rated one for sure
@ I mean, its not everyday that an anime character says the gamer word
@@Radiatron18 wdym you didn't like low tier frieren?
Ep 10 coming up... yeah, that's gonna be fire!
The fighting OST’s in this show have me ready to charge head first into Mordor ong
One of the most disrespectful ways to take someone out is doing so in the prologue before the opening song.
Just wait until episode 10.
Omg I can't wait until you guys watch the next episode!
Nerdy the Knightly, yeah, it was right there in front of us all along.
