- I have the photic sneeze reflex so I sneeze when I look at bright light.

*So technically the single nucleotide swap (C instead of T) is not actually in a gene per se but in an intergenic region on chromosome 2. It's also not clear exactly how this affects physiology or causes the sun sneeze but there is correlative evidence that every copy of this single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is associated with a 1.3x increase in likelihood of having the photic sneeze reflex.
I have wanted to make a video about sun-sneezing for a long time. It is something I've experienced my whole life. When I go from a dark room indoors into full sunlight I invariably sneeze. I thought everyone did it. So my original question was why do people sneeze when they see bright light? That led me to consider what possible evolutionary advantages there could be to sneezing in sunlight. The obvious advantage to me is that sunlight kills pathogens of which there may be many in your snot or mucus. So sneezing in sunshine is a much better idea than sneezing inside a dark, damp cave where you may be living.

That is what i tell everyone who ask me, i just say I'm allergic to the sun xD

@@MrFreeGman Well think, nothing good can come from publically aknowledging that conclusion, not for the credited scientists or the public audience; i.e, it doesn't affect the way a doctor would treat a person's illness, only what some illness corresponds to which race. Much of my life I sneezed 4 times when exposed to the sun. Since age 70, it has become a fairly consistent 5 times. It's good not to be alone in this regard.

I'm a sun sneezer. It was a long time before I realized other people "suffered" the same anomaly I did, because whenever I asked friends if they experienced the same they said no and questioned if it was really the sun that made me sneeze. I wish I had UA-cam in my childhood to subscribe to Veritasium. I've always been asked myself this question for 20 years
Derek, I sneeze compulsively when I pluck the stray "unibrow" hairs between my eyebrows.
I always suspected is was caused by nerve stimulation, but this compulsion is excessive-it triggers several sneezes over a minute or more, and I've counted as many as 22 before.
What the heck is going on there?
On the other hand, I get the sneeze tickle when I pluck hair out of my nose. Now this kind of makes sense to me, but your example is rather interesting!
your trigeminal nerve runs close by the middle of your eyebrows, when you pluck a hair it causes enough stimulation for the nerve to activate. this nerve is also believed to be stimulated by sunlight
when I have to sneeze, I look at a bright light lol. It usually works for me
