Non car enthusiasts have trouble believing an engine can work with an odd number of cylinders. There's no reason they can't (I think there's a new Mini that has a three-cylinder), but everyone is so accustomed to them coming in even number configurations.
Ben Wickham: The BMW i8 features a 231 HP 3-cylinder! Although I know the technical details of this car well enough, I still can't get over this. In combination with the electric motor the i8 is the most fuel economic hybrid sports car in the world - this wouldn't be possible with a V6. And in sports mode it even creates its own electricity. But even the 3-Cylinder 12 valve Turbo of the Daihatsu Charade GT ti with 101 PS is impressive. In the 90's nobody cared about 3-cylinders, and nobody thought this engine would be reliable. These guys were wrong.

i love the sound of a 5 cylinder engine since i was a child watching videos from rally A group, nowadays...I'm dreaming about a foxbody capri with a volvo 5 engine...some day maybe...
Exactly what I came here to say ;-) Volvo tunes the mounts to deal with the motion. You can get a LOT of vibration out of those motors, though, if your mounts are weak or you go with some more solid mounts. The Volvo 5 cylinder engines have only one mount attached to the transmission - and it's located very near the engine. The far side of the transmission has rubber bumpers and moves around quite a bit. The engine floats on two centrally located hydraulic mounts. One end of the block has a mount at the top of the engine - a VERY soft mount - and the other end has a relatively stiff mount at the bottom center of the engine. The engine is anchored to the bottom mount and bounces and twists around rather freely, taking the transmission along for the ride. Once you realize how the mounting system works you understand exactly why the three non-hydraulic mounts have a tendency to fail so often and why Volvo never changed the mounting setup on those engines.
Polybushed the top mount on my 850 t5. The sound vibrated through to the car very nicely. No it didn't crack the firewall mounting point either. Miss that car

Fuel economy sucks, and you'd think power should be more but isn't. A 2.5l 5cyl will be less powerful than a 2.5l 4cyl simply because of physics. They love boost though. That same comparison with a turbo is reversed. The 5 sings with a turbo.
@chak lee my rabbit w a manual never got 30mpg. That is ridiculous. Now I have a 2017 GLI and it consistently gets around 35mpg in mixed/ aggressive driving. I get almost 40mpg on a road trip using cruise.

I have owned 12 cars in my life. Most have either been 4-cyl or 6-cyl (V and inline) and a few V8s My 2015 Volvo S60 T5 is the first (and only) 5 cylinder I have ever owned. It is different going from Japanese and German cars to Swedish cars but I have to say I am impressed with Volvo and their 5-cyl turbo engines.
Admittedly, the five-pot and V10 are my absolute FAVORITE engines. V8s are so common and boring to me, but the sound of a good Straight five or V10 is just... ugh.
Cam shafts open and close the valves in time with the pistons throughout the four cycles. This allows air and fuel to enter the cylinder, be compressed, ignition pressure to push the piston down, and then let the exhaust out.
first off all Wikipedia and engineering explained are your friends. Do you understand how 4 cycle engines work? the suck squeeze bang and blow configuration the valves are actuated by a cam shaft which is driven by a timing belt or chain that goes to the crank, so the RPM always matches valve timing. - In the suck phase the valves by the intake manifold (where your fuel air mixture comes from) open, the piston is going down at this point creating a vacuum that draws in the fuel air mixture. Sometimes compressed in the case of turbo or super charged car - in the squeeze phase all the valves closed are closed. The piston is going up to compress the fuel air mixture. - In the bang phase the valves remain shut as the piston meets top dead center the spark plug detonates the mix, or in a diesel is just explodes because of stoichiometry. and sends the piston down. That'd be your power stroke. - The blow phase opens the valves to the exhaust manifold and the piston now going up forces the combustion products out the block.
the awesome thing about an inline 5 is it's the minimum about of cylinders required to always have combustion happening. Hence the smooth power delivery.

This video provided an in-depth and enlightening explanation of 5-cylinder engines, and I’ve gained a new appreciation for their unique characteristics. I was particularly fascinated to learn about the distinct firing order (1-2-4-5-3), which helps to balance the inherent asymmetry of the engine. The way manufacturers address the vibration and imbalance issues with engineering solutions like balance shafts is impressive, though it adds complexity. The video also highlighted the distinct engine note that sets 5-cylinders apart, somewhere between the smoother hum of a 6-cylinder and the punchy sound of a 4-cylinder. It’s clear why enthusiasts appreciate models like the Audi TT RS and Volvo 850 T-5R. While these engines may not be as widely used today, their blend of power, compactness, and engineering precision makes them a remarkable example of automotive innovation. Excellent content and thoroughly informative!
My Ford Ranger has a 3.2 five pot diesel and yes it's sounds like no other engine out there. Powerful and smooth will easily do 200 KLM per hour (closed circuit) not bad for a heavy 4x4 capable of towing 3.5 tonnes. They do have issues tho that are well documented..
Volvo S70 owner here, 2.5 liter 200hp turbo Engine, here are my thoughts: Pros: - The soouuundhh - Great performance, feels really fast - Can rev quite high - Fuel economy is decent (1.1L/100km(probably lower on highway)) - Small engine, lots of room in the engine bay, super easy to get to stuff - Really smooth - Extremely reliable Cons: - You have to buy 5 sparkplugs instead of 4:) - You'll never want to own a 4 cylinder ever again, which can lead to financial problems:)
I've owned two Volvo T5's. One 2007 S40 T5 AWD and an S60 T5 and they're great daily drivers that sound phenomenal in tunnels and drive magnificently on back roads.
Fiat Bravo 2.0 20v HGT 1999 owner here (same engine as the Fiat Coupe 2.0 20v turbo, except it is NA) I've bought it as my first car 10 years ago and I still own it, among with other cars. I only had problems with the radiator and water pump, who failed at the same time. The rest is A TANK in releability! It always gives me a big smile and a lot of fun. I dont care if it only has 155hp, I feel like a king on the road
I believe they are a little longer, since the V8 is just a touch longer than an I-4 (allowing for the cylinder stagger of a V8.) Still, one would probably fit...but the longer length would push the weight further forward of the front axle and screw up the handling a little.

One word Audi Quattro Sport and Evo 2 , best sounding rally car ever , once seen never forgotten . I heard my first Sports Quattro Evo 2 , before I even saw it , on the Lombard RAC Rally Stages , at first we thought it was a car with a miss fire , but it just got louder and louder , then it came round the bend out of the trees with that sound , the popping and banging , the turbo waste gate whistling and wooshing , then in a flash it was past us and vanishing back into the woods , that brief encounter with the winged monster Quattro in 1985 stuck with me for the rest of my life and even though the crazy sounding Lancia Delta S4 was also in the event , the Quattro sound was so special .that is why I will always like the 5 cyclinder from Audi .
Happy with the 2.4L 5I Volvo diesel engine in my 2017 XC60, 190hp and very good fuel economy and I did Polestar motor optimization software approved by Volvo and it give 220hp now. I was looking for a 4I 2.0L diesel from Volvo and didn't know that Volvo makes an awesome 5I engine and now I am happy that I bought the very last production of 5I, they stopped its production, and making only 2.0L 4I now .

Secondly is the most reliable engine of Mercedes Benz ever made (the MB has a history of 5cyl engines and their durability) i have another E270 CDI with 1 million kilometres surpassed and it drives like a dream.
THIRDLY
I love the sounddd it makes, is as well the best sounding turbodiesel engine of Mercedes-Benz, like a V10 Diesel just ROOAAAARS and makes a very very loud noise like it wants to explode lol :)
I have a C 250 TD, 5 cylinders, my self. Awesome.
i have 5 Cylinder w211 2004 with 250000 KM on it its best engine no PBLM
my straight piped 2.5, 5 cyl jetta is a beauty, so dam reliable and very good at punching above its weight, also the jetta 2.5 se handles fucking good with some good tires its uncanny really

Love the I5. My personal fav is the one in the Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo. Like a mini Ferrari.
Or the Fiat Stilo Abarth 2.4 20v. Also an amazing car.

I am a 2006 Volvo XC90 us spec owner, love the sound and economy from my T5 family car
I never knew the XC90 could come with a T5, guess it was never an option in the UK here it was either the D5, T6 or V8
Wet Lettuce the XC90 USDM came with a T5 up till 2007. 2008 saw a T6 as the standard engine.
Economy? Ours gets 13 mpg lmao
I like mine :) Wish I saw more Volvo's in this lineup but still happy an awesome post became a video!
Luke Woessner hey p80 Volvo fam!
Luke Woessner I've got an s60 t5. I love it
P80 here too! Or even if it was not Volvos, at least Fords, since they used the same engine.
Luke Woessner I have Volvo s40 it is ok
Used to have an 850 T5 was a beast of a car just regret having an automatic though... Just waiting for my current S80 to conk out before replacing it with an '05ish V70R :D
Put one in Phil instead of a V6

I've had 3 different Mercs with a 5 cylinder, same engine thou. all three were 2,7 CDI ( turbo diesel ) W211 E-classes. i always liked their grunt when i mash the pedal. the most memorable were my 2,3 audi Quattro from 1993, fun car.
OH MY DAYS, That 5 pot sound from the quattro is orgasmic!
Jetta or Bora with 2.5 has a five cylinders and it is pretty nice
IZI Lozoya that's a strange case of multiple personality. In America they had that inline 5. But in Europe they had a 2.3 v5. Vr6 minus one cilinder.
@@pokest225 the v5 sounded,awesome with a muffler delete!!
Absolutely loved my Jettas... Vr5 was the Best car I owned so far
I stopped having a 4 cylinder engined car decades ago, ever since owning an Audi coupe, quattro's baby sister in the 80's.
Technically, the GT Coupe would be Quattro's big brother.
I love the 2.5 I5 in my jetta Wolfsburg edition smooth power and awesome exhaust note
@chak lee mine is also a 2007
Absolutely love the Volvo 850R and the sound the 5 cylinder motor makes upon twisting the throttle! Great video!!!
I have a Volvo V50 2.4 D5, and I just love the growl when I floor it. Also it is fast, and pulls like a train in every gear. The only negative is the slight turbo lag. But once HE (because with that sort of grunt, it can hardly be described as a "she") is moving, the performance for a diesel is just addictive.
I absolutely love my inline 5, it's just the best after 4000rpm
3500-4600
Why a 5cyc? Just listen to the damm thing, sounds like a work of art and with power & torque to match.
i love the sound of a 5 cylinder engine since i was a child watching videos from rally A group, nowadays...I'm dreaming about a foxbody capri with a volvo 5 engine...some day maybe...
LOVE IT! Inline 5 is just the coolest engine one can have under the hood!
god i fakun loove those 5 cylinder cars especially if they have an extra turbo... thats why i bought my wonderful volvo 850 t5
turbobrick for life :D
Volvos dont have a balancing shaft and they do just fine.
Exactly what I came here to say ;-)
Volvo tunes the mounts to deal with the motion.
Volvo mounts are expensive and shit
Polybushed the top mount on my 850 t5. The sound vibrated through to the car very nicely. No it didn't crack the firewall mounting point either. Miss that car
"Sounds like baby V10."
No! V10 sounds like double awesomeness of I5!

I love the 5 pot so much, no 4 cylinder can replace the sound and power delivery that it gives :')

And underpowered means you have more, nice engine sound for a longer time when pushing it.
CubeV70 2.5 10v :3
Love my RS3 to bits! Great sound and power!
The fuel economy of a v6, the horsepower of a 4cyl., And the steady, smooth torque of a V8.
Now, I know why I am in love with my dad's five cylinder diesel engine. The driving experience is smooth as a butter.
Glad the Fiat 20v engine got a mention. they're such a lovely engine in both NA and turbo form. found in the Bravo, Marea and coupe as a 2.0l and also found in the Stilo as a 2.4l. it was discontinued after that. such a shame.

I have owned 12 cars in my life.
Most have either been 4-cyl or 6-cyl (V and inline) and a few V8s
My 2015 Volvo S60 T5 is the first (and only) 5 cylinder I have ever owned. It is different going from Japanese and German cars to Swedish cars but I have to say I am impressed with Volvo and their 5-cyl turbo engines.
You learn a new thing everyday. I did not know the Merc engine was a 5 pot. I always thought it was a 6
Back in 80s&90sMerc useded both of them.
Admittedly, the five-pot and V10 are my absolute FAVORITE engines. V8s are so common and boring to me, but the sound of a good Straight five or V10 is just... ugh.
The LFA has an even firing v10. if it were an odd firing engine (like bmw's and lambo's v10), it would sound amazing.
Or the carrera GT, it sounds like a formula 1 car

Can you explain the valves ? I am still a kid learning about cars (small petrolhead)
The valves open and close to allow air in and exhaust out...
Cam shafts open and close the valves in time with the pistons throughout the four cycles. This allows air and fuel to enter the cylinder, be compressed, ignition pressure to push the piston down, and then let the exhaust out.
first off all Wikipedia and engineering explained are your friends.
Do you understand how 4 cycle engines work? the suck squeeze bang and blow configuration
the valves are actuated by a cam shaft which is driven by a timing belt or chain that goes to the crank, so the RPM always matches valve timing.
- In the suck phase the valves by the intake manifold (where your fuel air mixture comes from) open, the piston is going down at this point creating a vacuum that draws in the fuel air mixture. Sometimes compressed in the case of turbo or super charged car
- in the squeeze phase all the valves closed are closed.
I’m 13 and I understand about it, sort of
I really dig the BT-50/Ranger inline 5. Also the VR5. The VR5 has got to be the best sounding engine ever made.
@@Naughty_Squad that's my opinion mate. I like the vr5 and the bt50. That's what I like. And they both sound mad as hell straight piped. Your comment is quite irrelevant. It's my opinion mate. Thought that was a given.

Volvo S70 owner here, 2.5 liter 200hp turbo Engine, here are my thoughts:
Pros:
- The soouuundhh
- Great performance, feels really fast
- Can rev quite high
- Fuel economy is decent (1.1L/100km(probably lower on highway))
- Small engine, lots of room in the engine bay, super easy to get to stuff
- Really smooth
- Extremely reliable
Cons:
- You have to buy 5 sparkplugs instead of 4:)
- You'll never want to own a 4 cylinder ever again, which can lead to financial problems:)
I still miss the sound of my '83 Audi Coupé.

MiNy_PiXeL Not really, they can be mounted transversely.
+MiNy_PiXeL Volvo T5s are transverse and people have fitted them in the rears of mr2s can't be too hard to get it in a miata
People can fit a LS1 in a miata, why not an I5?
I believe they are a little longer, since the V8 is just a touch longer than an I-4 (allowing for the cylinder stagger of a V8.) Still, one would probably fit...but the longer length would push the weight further forward of the front axle and screw up the handling a little.
Pro: I never understood why people loved engine sounds until I heard the 1985 Audi Quattro, and my life has been downhill ever since.
Cons: I cannot get my hands on a 1985 Audi Quattro
5 should be the lowest number allowed by law. They sound awesome. So do most inline 6&8 cylinder. Most inline fours sound crappy, very few exceptions. I like V4 sound but only ever really used in motorcycle applications. Some H4 not bad. Most V6 sound crappy but a few. Most V8, V10, & V 12 sounds good and the W16 sounds good.
