I love a low and slow cross country train trip in my private roomette. My last trip was the Empire Builder Chicago to Seattle. The dining room food was excellent

We will be taking the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle this December. We look forward to some good food.

I’m going on the southbound coast starlight from Portland to Oxnard on August 25th/26th in a sleeping car for the first time in a really long long time!

That will be a great trip and you’ll get more daylight and great views than we did in January. Enjoy!

I just found your channel. I took my first Amtrak trip a few weeks ago from Walnut Ridge, Ark to San Antonio, TX. Wish I would have found your channel before that trip. Can't wait to watch your other videos and follow your journey. Safe travels!

That will be a great trip and you’ll have more hours of daylight along the coastline. If you are travelling by sleeper, phone Amtrak to make sure your room is on the ocean side. They should be able to confirm this or change your room if one is available.

We've heard that some individuals will get an Amtrak roomette, just for themselves. It's a more expensive option, of course. The Via Rail Canadian offers more single options with affordable bunks and single person cabins. Both are very comfortable. I've done both when travelling on my own from Winnipeg to Vancouver.

Well done with this guys!. One of the best Amtrak videos on the Starlight. You have not overdone the amenities like hooks and toilets but concentrated on the food and the views. I have travelled the Starlight many times and is a great ride both ways. Re ..the upper bunk.... they are not the greatest. Caution..if you do the Empire Builer..it gets real rocky during the nite. As i write this i have not yet finnished watching the video! Good luck and happy travels...( now you MUST )do the Via Rail Train#1 The Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver... it is amazing!! Good luck to you both.

Just happened to stumble across this video - very impressed. I am planning a 6-week Amtrak trip on the Coast Starlight, The Empire Builder & The Californian Zypher. I have been on the Southwest Chief, The City of New Orleans & The Maple Leaf. Love your video - you covered all the relevant points, particularly the sleeping dimensions & the space under the seat for a Roomette - very useful information, all good to know, (particularly as I live in Sydney, Australia & there are always so many questions I would like to ask & your video covered them all, thank you.) Sad about the medical incident, unfortunately, these things happen - hope they are okay? Looking forward to now viewing your earlier videos.

Thanks! It's great to know the videos are helpful. As for the medical incident, we heard nothing about it after switching trains. It sounds like you have a fantastic train trip to look forward to. We are planning to take the Empire Builder at Christmas time. Enjoy!

So i am spending the rest of the day watching your videos... again, well done. Best regards. Hope to see you on the rails someday!

I wish you could have enjoyed the Coast Starlight pre-pandemic, when it had the Pacific Parlor Car for sleeper passengers. Full cash bar, wine and cheese tasting, chafing dishes of hot meats and rolls for snacking, luxurious old wooden paneling, and the most fun shared by everyone, as we were all lubricated, laughing, and not wanting the trip to end too soon. Lower level had movies for the kids. But save-a-buck Amtrak pulled them as soon as they had an excuse. That Parlor car was the destination.

Wow! The Parlour Car would have been a great experience. Too bad it has disappeared. The nearest North American equivalent I can think of is the Park Car on Via Rail's Canadian: a complete cash bar with full time bartenders, free snacks, fresh fruit, coffee and tea, a fancy lounge area and a glass-domed seating area above. No chafing dishes though!

Fully agree the Parlor Car sure looked like a unique feature for Sleeping Car passengers on this train - I recall watching earlier videos - and it sure seemed like fun with the wine tasting & the parlor chairs - what a way to travel on a train. Lucky you to have actually experienced it.

I rode the coast Starlights just two months after the retirement of the Pacific parlor cars. I was pissed in 2018 but whatever.
Next week I’m flying to Canada to ride to Canadian, going from Toronto all the way to Vancouver!
Before I hop on a flight and head to Australia. I’m gonna be riding both the Indian Pacific and the Ghan!

In fairness the Pacific Parlor Cars were built in the 1950s (the other equipment was built in the 1970s and 1990s) so were pretty non-standard with the rest of the fleet and probably a lot more cost and effort to keep running. However I agree they were enjoyable the couple of times I got to ride in them.

We took the Coast Starlight once. and only once. Average speed was 30 MPH. Breathtaking

Slow can be good, at least along the Pacific coastline.

Wow! You wonderfully captured Nature's scenery from the train! I'm a huge fan of roomettes.🙂 I'm on my second viewing of your great video, I'm also enjoying your tour of Portland's station, your tour of your roomette, your awesome music selections and -- yes -- your winning facial expressions whenever you take a bite of yummy meals on the Coast Starlight.❤❤❤❤❤

Thanks for the info. We've been in a Roomette on a Viewliner that definitely has more room. But we'll try the California Zephyr in a Roomette next year. Odd about that evacuation, I've never heard of that. Thanks for the great video
