The killing is criminally underrated,it is masterpiece I must say.whats unique about the series is that it deals with so many emotions along with the thriller aspect.when I first saw the name of series I didn't expected it to be so deep in emotions.the director did a great job showing every human aspect related with missing of a girl.i think in the second season director wanted to give a message against capital punishment as there are so many faults in our judicial system.it was shown in very subtle yet powerful way through brilliant acting.the way they showed how even a hardened criminal would break literally gave me chills.this show fulfilled every expectation I have.
Just Binged the whole Series..Speechless..So much story behind every characters.I loved the duo. Linden n Holder. Every emotions bought to the screen..epic cast..
Really? There were critics criticizing the final because the leading characters haven't developed romantic relationship?? Are they blind? These two, Linden and Holder, they have chemistry! They share the same trauma, and the mindset with similar backgrounds, in a word, they're meant for each other! Romantically written or not, there are many subject tying these characters together, like: loneliness and wanting to be found! If you watch them all the way through, you would understand why they keep emphasizing those subjects. This show is brilliant mainly because of these character development!
Anyway, love this show. Since finishing the show (about five years ago), I have trouble finding some good dramas featuring leading female detective, who is NOT interested in flirting or developing romantic relationship with male characters. Like, there is a few, but not enough. If you have any recommendation, please let me know! (It's really nice to find out that to this day, there is still someone who enjoy this show. Wish you have a blessed day :)
yeah that made no sense to me at all. there's some great sexual tension in season 3 and like I said in the video, I was personally happy they found each other after so much pain. They deserved to be happy and maybe the only people in the world that truly understand each other. This show is so underrated in how it deals with depression, isolation, trauma, recovery, and grief. If you haven't seen the original Danish version I'd highly recommend that. Bates Motel has a moody crime drama vibe but it's more horror-centric. Hanna on amazon stars Enos and Kinnaman but its very different from The Killing. Damages is the most like The Killing I think in style and characters. Check that out!
@@LoneWolfeMedia I've seen the original version, the pacing is better, but the thing is, they don't have the same chemistry or sexual tension as beautifully written as the adapted version. It's kind of like coins with two sides. The investigation of American version is stretched and shattered, but in a way, has time to build the bond with main characters. Like when the first time Holder is breaking down in middle of the road, with car passing by, Linden is the one to reach out for him. They don't really show their care for each other outwardly, they are kind of like, hidden inside, you can only see those gestures through details. There is a scene I really love, which you also include in this video, is that in the interrogation room, Linden look at the mirror without knowing that Holder is on the other side directly watching her. It's so poetic. They know they are there without checking they are. Making out would have cheapen this delicate balance. I've seen Hanna. Kind of disappointed, it would just make me re-watch the Killing. Nevertheless, love Mireille Enos. Have watch Bates Motel too, it's kind of going downwards after Season 2 or 3...? Anyway, thanks for letting me rant this much, and thanks for the recommendation!
Stay with Bates Motel! It gets SO much better in season 4, that’s when they start playing with the events of Psycho! Thanks for stopping by! I love having these conversations!
Right, the subtleness of their relationship is what I loved. It wasn't bogged down with the usual crappy sex scenes. Hell, they dont even kiss the entire show. They come close after Bullet is murdered, and we, the viewers, assume they kiss in the final scene of the series, but we don't see it. I thought it was great. Critics must have been use to the typical unrealistic and over the top cop dramas.
Just finished binging this last night and i feel a void now in me - this series unexpectedly took a piece of my heath, absolutely devastated me and left me an emotional wreck, but i will treasure it forever. Such a beautiful show, such an intense brutal portrayal of the senselessness and emotional nature of human life. Although i didn't love season 4, the finale redeemed every bit of it... I'm so in love with this show. So in love.
People don’t have to start a relationship with romantic feelings established, first of. I think them ending up together was perfect, romantically or not, they didn’t have time for actual romance while dedicated to their jobs and it shows by how neither Linden or Holder could stay in a relationship, or be truthful to their partners the same way they were to one another. Basically: it’s complicated. And that’s what we like about THE KILLING, the fact that it’s complicated. The people criticising the main characters ending up together are the same people who don’t understand the pace of the first and second season, so, the people who went into the series with an idea of what they wanted it to be already instead of enjoying the ride. Istg…
I must say that I never had heard of The Killing until 2019. And, I have never watched the Walking Dead.....ick. This is one of the very best scripts ever, and the actors are also excellent. I was hoping that there will be a sequel.
This is currently available on Disney+ (in the UK, not sure if the contents are the same in all regions). I loved S1 when it first aired but was angry to find there was no closure in S1. I was annoyed but I continued with S2 and it was a great show. It deserves to get some new viewers as it still holds up today.
One of the best shows in my opinion. Just didn’t love how the first and second season was about only one case while the 3rd and 4th wasn’t. I think the first case could have been solved a lot quicker but overall what an amazing watch and I loved the ending!

Just finished watching the last episode, for the first time. Hadn't seen the series before, but it was really good. I just got confused on the last e, almost thought the conclusion was that Sarah had thought she killed the lieutenant, but that it was a delusion of sorts. That's the big reason I looked for videos about the series and it's ending. Only found this, but a really good video. Thank you.
I am by no means a serious movie critic, but I found it entertaining, sometimes exciting, sometimes frustrating, and I liked it. I am just finishing season 2 and to be honest I’m ready for the ending. I would give it an 8 out of 10.

Looks very good. The woman who plays Sara was in "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "In Treatment" -- she was excellent in both. I believe this series is on Netflix ... or I hope it is!
I haven't even watched a single episode of this series but I feel like I've just binged the whole thing. This was a really pleasant listen (despite the unpleasant storyline). You have a real gift for spoken analysis and presenting fiction in a compelling way :) Any chance of you doing Lost next?
AMC was more than a budding network when The Killing debuted, and the Walking Dead wasn't its first breakout hit. AMC aired Breaking Bad and Mad Men before then which were two of the most popular shows of all time.
If you check the ratings those shows didn’t take off until the later seasons, very low viewership per episode. Sure they were critical and awards darlings, but Mad Men never took off like BB to be honest and Breaking Bad only took off during its fourth season. The Walking Dead was by far its most successful debut, completely dwarfing all their other shows.
That's just the first thing the other thing about that is that they accused pretty much everybody in the cast at some point made it seem like it was actually them and then was like no it wasn't sorry . But by that point the damage was already done because this show was trying to do to much in that first season. Like the investigation, the campaign, keeping up with the grieving family ,the personal lives of the detectives and then the damn Indian reservation and the teacher who was trying to help the little girl and almost died for because they accused him of being the killer. All these story lines exist to do one thing prolong a story that would have been solved by the end of a single episode of a good show. This show is impressed with it self for being deep and realistic and dark . And it's one those things.
The disparity between critics and audience just highlights how out of touch critics are. I really like the ending of the show even if the Mayor Richmond part was pretty cheap.
The show had a bumpy journey with critics after that season one finale. I think a lot of the later criticisms are still tempered with anger towards the show extending the Larsen case into two seasons.
I agree, but it still would have been nice to maybe have a movie finale, see them happy but pulled into another case. Wrap until any loose ends that still remain and even get some more cameos. But a fan can dream, right?
@@LoneWolfeMedia I liked that they were broken characters, that worked well together, but you could see if they hooked up it would be disasterous,if i had one complaint it would be a bit too many dead end twists in s2 and 3
I need yo say this as a person who watched that whole first season going in with no knowledge about ratings or what ever and only looking at the IMDb and remembering seeing the ads for the show . And fully expecting to love this show and loving the beginning. I hate this show with a passion. It was boring because they did like 30 red herrings in only like half the season and that's not realistic because real murder cases go on for years. Those cases went on that long because they had no real leads they had like 50 in just a few days and it still took them forever to figure it out at least it felt like forever.
Just another example of a great series, well written and directed (well, except for tossing in cameos and naming schemes designed as tributes to the original Danish series) that gets cancelled and then gets a reprieve, canceled again and then we get a season 4 that is just, well, not in the same league as the first 3 seasons. Honestly, they should have ended season 3 with them arresting Skinner. Shooting Skinner and everything after is just out of character for both Linden and Holder. Echoes of "Lost" and "Game of Thrones".
IDK i think the series did a good job showcasing Linden's fragile mental state, and being confronted with all that information from a man she'd just made love to and was about to enter into a relationship with would be enough to make anyone go crazy. I also liked season 4 but do agree its no where near the quality of the first three seasons. Season three was so good, I thought for a second maybe the show could stage a comeback.
Linden was the worst cop and Mum and friend. Big ball of miserability for most of 4 seson. Couldn't stand her by the end. Holder deserved way way better
Series could have had so much potential but they stretched the script out too far in seasons 1&2. Sort of like a next generation Mulder and Scully duo, Holder and Linden were quite a pairing on television and balanced each other. I am not usually into detective shows but this lead casting was exceptional.
I'm on Episode 17 and the detectives are still bumbling along (accusing and arresting the wrong people) trying to catch the real killer and destroying everyone's lives along the way. It's getting pretty monotonous.
i barely go the end of the 2nd season... they stretched what should've been 1 season into 2... it got boring af.. the formula was already figured out by the 1st season with the "surprise" twists in change of narrative for the main suspect of the episode.... tbh by the end of the 2nd season it was more like "thank god it's over finding the killer" rather than any type of climatic surprise... i'm not watching beyond 2 seasons because i can't fathom 2 more of an already paper thin premise... but if i'm left with anything... the detectives in this story seem to be beyond incompetent and the narrators of the story are just trying to hard to subvert expectations... waste of time.
I get your points, I never had a problem with the red herrings and twist endings, I was enthralled with the character work and acting performances. I’d highly recommend watching season 3. It’s widely regarded as an improvement by those who hated the first two seasons. It’s tighter, darker, and they resolve the case at the end, though it does contain a cliffhanger for season 4.
@@LoneWolfeMedia I would recommend watch season 3 too. It touches some controversies which they wouldn't touch nowadays, for example, abolishing the death penalty. And I think they're well included and brilliantly written!
The first season caught my attention; however, as is often the case, the second season proved tedious. The multiple subtexts, a jumping around for no apparent reason was most annoying. I didn’t need to know about Sarah’s psychiatric or maternal crisis-and, btw, what was a woman with full time employment doing jostling about fleabag motels-?? The actress who grabs Central character status has always struck me as flat-expressionless and bland. Basically, I lost interest. Too many left and rights that go nowhere-and by the time certain select threads finally meld together-I didn’t give a damn..
You like this show and I'm happy about that because I really wanted to but I just couldn't over look one thing about it .because I could have overlooked every other thing I mentioned if the show had half likeable characters but no . Just a bunch of miserable a holes especially the mom , she abandoned her whole family at one point after neglecting her two sons . That's not how you grieve. And her daughter dying is no excuse to treat the rest of her family like that. And turn around and expect me to feel sorry for her.
Yeah I’m not too thrilled with how they handled Mitch’s character as the show progressed. I was still in love with her acting performance so it got some brownie points for that
Have you ever lost someone who had your heart ? I felt this was very realistic. So many couples divorce after a loss of a child so her leaving is credible. Everyone grieves differently.
That's what a retrospective is, a review of the show with behind-the-scenes information and my own thoughts sprinkled in, which you would have known if you actually watched the video. thanks for the engagement though, it really helps with the algorithm.

Yeah I don’t like this show and watching this just reminded me why
It’s not for everyone. Thanks for stopping by though :)
Another one filmed in the dark
Series could have had so much potential but they stretched the script out too far in seasons 1&2.
Sort of like a next generation Mulder and Scully duo, Holder and Linden were quite a pairing on television and balanced each other. I am not usually into detective shows but this lead casting was exceptional.
Yeah I wish they had found a way to condense the two seasons into one, the show would have lasted so much longer.
Original Danish version is far more superior
Both shows are incredible. The Killing is essentially its own show from season two onward
Ninguna como la versión original!
I'm on Episode 17 and the detectives are still bumbling along (accusing and arresting the wrong people) trying to catch the real killer and destroying everyone's lives along the way. It's getting pretty monotonous.
I do agree that the first two seasons most likely should have been condensed down to one.
i barely go the end of the 2nd season... they stretched what should've been 1 season into 2... it got boring af.. the formula was already figured out by the 1st season with the "surprise" twists in change of narrative for the main suspect of the episode.... tbh by the end of the 2nd season it was more like "thank god it's over finding the killer" rather than any type of climatic surprise... i'm not watching beyond 2 seasons because i can't fathom 2 more of an already paper thin premise... but if i'm left with anything... the detectives in this story seem to be beyond incompetent and the narrators of the story are just trying to hard to subvert expectations... waste of time.
Clickbait!!!
Don't need someone to explain the show!
That's what a retrospective is, a review of the show with behind-the-scenes information and my own thoughts sprinkled in, which you would have known if you actually watched the video. thanks for the engagement though, it really helps with the algorithm.
This director really loves the rain and lights combo through windows
